I am currently on the market for a Subaru Impreza
I found this one on craigs:
Subaru Sedan Impreza 2005 2.5RS Low KM (http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/nvn/cto/4037965540.html)
Has a new clutch and fairly new tires. However, paint on rims is peeling.
When I checked out the car. things that really stood out was that there was no oil in the engine. No records either. He said his friend is a mechanic and just changes things when they are broken.
I am just curious how much you would have offered for a car like that or would you have just walked away.

When you saw no oil you should have asked him to start it. If he starts the car just turn and run!

Reminds me of a 2009 RAV4 that came in for an oil change once. Had less than a litre of oil left :derp:

why does it have no oil?
2 possibilities...
-severe oil leak (huge repair cost is waiting for you)
-drained the oil and didn't fill up (what's the point of this? bad oil is better than no oil)

Be aware that these Subaru 2.5 non-turbo motors had head gasket issues. I believe Subaru recommended changing the coolant often and use their "coolant conditioner". I'd probably walk if there aren't good maintenance records.

It's been beat.
They are telling you, its beat.
It's going into the mechanic friend for after hours parts. How much shit is actually breaking?
A clutch disc at 120,000kms? I know this isn't unheard of, and it could be a Subaru thing, but that seems like a fast replacement to me. They also conveniently put tires on at the same time.
Oh...right...AND THEY DROVE IT WITHOUT OIL.

Run away. Why the hell would there be no oil in the car?

bear in mind no oil on the dipstick doesnt necessarily mean no oil in the crankcase. some cars will have no oil on the dipstick when its only down half a quart or so.

You went to look at a car
You determined there was NO/very little oil in the engine
Why are we even having this conversation?

I did take it for a test drive. It drives really nicely, but I don't know for how much longer LOL. I did end up offering him $5500. When he heard my offer, he was about to slap me in the face and told me good bye.
What can I say... He was a dentist.

My brother got an '04 with well-kept records, clean history, etc. for quite a bit less than that.

anytime you are looking to buy any car with little to no records take it to a trusted mechanic first. Have them look it over it'll save you thousands in the long run.

Sounds like they did start it without oil, that right there should tell you to run.

go to the vancouver impreza club:
Vancouver Impreza Club Forum -- VIC - NASIOC (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=30)
they will know more about this sort of thing and maybe someone there has or knows someone who has what you want for sale.

If you we're asking 3 months earlier, I woulda sold you my 06' impreza for cheaper instead of trading it into the stealership lolzz.
But yea... Look for head gasket leaks.
If gaskets and timing belt etc were replaced, then i would consider. But no oil wtf?
