Honda may not actually be showing off the production form of its upcoming Euro-only 2015 Civic Type R at the Frankfurt Motor Show this year, but it did take advantage of the focused media attention to make a pretty cool announcement. In addition to dropping a really hot video of the new Type R testing at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, Honda Europe president, Manabu Nishimae, gifted us with some juicy details about the coming hot hatch.

Nishimae confirmed rumours that this Type R would make use of a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, while telling us that the mill would be good for an output of "at least 280 PS." A raw conversion from PS (metric horsepower) to standard horsepower gives us a figure of about 276 hp, or very near the rumoured figure of 300 galloping, front-wheeled ponies.

The company will need each ounce of output from its new 2.0-litre engine if it is to meet its stated performance target: making the Civic Type R the fastest front-wheel-drive production car around the 'Ring. Apparently this last session of testing, with World Touring Car Championship driver Gabriele Tarquini at the wheel, has already gotten Honda close to the lap record. Scroll down to read Honda's brief press release about the upcoming Type R, and, more importantly, to listen to the car as it's throttled around the track.

Honda Reveal First Details of New Civic Type R

At today's Frankfurt Motor Show Press Conference, Manabu Nishimae, President, Honda Motor Europe revealed the first details of the hotly anticipated new Civic Type R. Powered by a direct injection turbocharged 2- litre engine, the new Civic Type R will deliver at least 280 PS.

Honda confirmed ambitions for the Civic Type R to become the fastest front wheel drive car around the infamous Nurburgring circuit in Germany. The car still faces a further 2 years of development before going on sale in 2015 however, on-track testing has already begun. "We have recently spent a week at the Nurburgring, carrying out extensive testing and we are on target, and have already set a time approaching the lap record", said Manabu Nishimae.

A film demonstrating the impressive performance and handling of the Civic Type R development car on the Nurburgring with Gabriele Tarquini, Honda's WTCC driver behind the wheel, was premiered during the Honda Press Conference.

Honda's new Civic Tourer made its public debut at the show and during the Press Conference, it was confirmed that it would achieve impressively low CO2 emissions from only 99g/km* (3,8 litres l/100km) when partnered with Honda's 1.6 i-DTEC engine. The Civic Tourer builds on the strength of the Civic 5-Door, offering class leading boot space and practicality.

"For me, the strength of the car is the synergy of functionality, versatility, and dynamic design. As a European development team, we're passionate and proud about what we've achieved", said Adrian Killham, Large Project Leader for Civic Tourer.

Screw Honda.

They haven't made anything interesting in a long time. Also wth is DTECH? is that one of those frankinmotors where they take a D series block and but vtec head on it?

yeah they should've made a 276bhp NA 2.0L 4cyl, rev it up to 9,500rpm-10,000rpm ish.

While this is no Type-R like the 90's, I'm personally glad Honda is at least doing something a little bit more exciting.

may be because it's not feasible to crank out more than 220hp from a 2L 4-banger and still adhere strict EU emission standards?

and god damn Honda's R&D for trying to break 'Ring lap records :derp:

It would take a lot more than just slapping in the turbo to net records for FWD on the ring, so I’m not sure I would call them lazy.

Honda has always made great high revving NA motors, but with the competition in the “hot hatch” market (at least in the UK and Europe), I don’t think they have a choice anymore, they have to turbo to stay competitive and keep the smaller displacement. I’m excited that it sounds like they are actually trying to build something to compete with some of the bench marks like the Focus ST and Golf R. They have lost the plot since getting rid of the S2000 and never releasing a NON hybrid K powered CRZ, so maybe this begins the long road back to what Honda used to be?

2.0L turbo Type R CRZ please.

Hyundai did it with their genesis 2.0T :accepted:

276hp type R... pft, dissapointed. AMG pulled 355hp from a 2.0T engine and it passes all emissions test/is reliable. Hyundai did 270 hp from their 2.0T and it's the lowest model. WTF honda, stick to making robots and lawnmowers plz, your glory days are over.

HP is just a calculation of torque and engine RPM.
Not easy making a engine rev anywhere near as high as those F1 engines and staying fairly reliable.
and good luck driving with those engine on the street.

everyone just needs to calm down, if you know a Honda engine you know it can get amazing amounts of power with just tuning...

the k20 engine "8th gen civic, rsx, ep3 civic sir and a few others im sure im missing" can make 340whp on just 5 psi without a huge turbo, a friend made 380whp on 8 psi on a 2.0L 4 cyl engine. and that just a bolt on kit with a local tuner.

as a manufacturer im sure they are playing it safe with their tune incase stupid consumers decided to run shitty fuel in it, or beat on it more often than they should.. kinda makes sense to make it really safe or else everyone will be running around like chickens with their heads cut off when some douche puts 87 octane in and starts to pre detonate and leaves a bad review.

and why is everyone so bent about power.. the STI makes about 300hp with a 2.5..

most people purchasing this car will never use the power of it and the few that do will obviously modify it anyways.. like most of us did with our cars.

Honda's design team needs a kick in the rear. The body line of the current gen civic are so ugly for lack of a better word. From the side profile the hood just takes the same line as the windshield so you go from the roof of the car pretty much all the way to the pavement in one direct line. I've always been a Honda fan, but that one aspect alone turned me off from buying a Civic this year.

^ but it doesn't meet emissions standards
Honda Civic Type R axed in UK | Autocar (http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/motoring/honda-civic-type-r-axed-uk)

the K20A in Civic Mugen RR was rated at 240hp...so is the F20C but going over that w/o FI while staying under the new emission standards will be very difficult.

If this thing in fact makes it to Canada and the United States, it will provide a much needed boost to Honda's image in the North American sport compact community. Things have certainly gone downhill for Honda since the mid 00s, resulting the death of the JDM Civic (and a poorly designed and constructed non-JDM variant), petrol powered JDM Accord, S2000, Integra and R models.
