Blackberry Messenger launching on Android, iPhone | News1130 (http://www.news1130.com/2013/09/20/blackberry-messenger-launching-on-android-iphone/)

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A feature that people loyal to Blackberry have been asking for is on it’s way this weekend.

Blackberry Messenger (BBM) will be available on Android and iPhone. This opens the door for people on all of the major smartphone platforms to send messages back and forth.

Local tech journalist Akash Sablok tells us it’s something Blackberry is hoping will help them turn things around.

“Putting this out there, expanding the user base, and of course, giving BBM options to people that now can communicate with people outside the Blackberry… will hopefully have people retain their Blackberry.”

“I’ve done a rough survey that people do really this app to be able to communicate with users of other devices. This allows them to hold on to their BBM,” he adds.

One of the big selling points of the cross-platform BBM is group chats, with up to 30 contacts.

But while people who own a Blackberry can send photos and video, that’s a feature that won’t come to Android and iPhone until later on.

**is BBM even relevant anymore?

I would get it to try it out... then switch back to whatsapp.

BBM is too late to the game (again). Whatsapp uses your current phone number as your "pin" so whats the point in remembering another set of numbers really.

whatsapp's group chat is up to 50 contacts, so whats their selling point again?

they dondies anyways, time to sell whatever they have

I think the main selling point is having a personalized PIN and the send/read receipts. Screen share could be something as well in the future. Although I don't really see a lot of whatsapp/other messaging platform users jumping ship to BBM.

BBM should be here by 4:30pm according to BBM coming to Android and Apple users today, gradual global roll out underway - Sci/Tech - DNA (http://www.dnaindia.com/scitech/1892011/report-bbm-coming-to-android-and-apple-users-today-gradual-global-roll-out-underway)

The big advantage for BBM in my experiences, was the reliability of it. Whatsapp sometimes doesn't send and receive messages instantly. Whereas, BBM was much more reliable. My Whatsapp messages sometimes take 5-20mins to send.

I think the BBM servers are much more secure and reliable than the whatsapp servers. Though, I haven't used BBM in a long time, I still get reliability issues with my whatsapp messages today.

Running it already, if you DL the leaked APK from crackberry.com the servers are up and running. So it works now.

This is only for android. iPhone is live in NZ, australia and indonesia so i'm sure it will move westward quickly...

Everyone uninstall whats app and transition over to the future...

This happens almost daily for me. It takes a random amount of time to send/receive whatsapp messages. If I know my message is time sensitive, I will always use SMS or call. I can't rely on whatsapp.

Is downloading the leaked APK the same as the official version? I'm worried to download it for whatever reason.

My friend said his friends with blackberry's aren't getting his BBM messages (he's on android)

I think it's pertinent to mention that BBM is still huge outside of the west. Indonesia, India, the UAE, etc are faithful to Blackberry.

Seriously?????

Many millions of people are anxiously awaiting the release of BBM for Android and iOS, and some of them already have access to the messaging service on the latter platform. But since the Android version was supposed to be made available at 7am ET this morning, many potential users have been frustrated by BlackBerry’s silence and the app’s absence on the Play Store.

Turns out there was an issue caused by an earlier leak of the app, one that brought an incomplete experience to users around the world. BlackBerry has since decided to cut off access to that version, leaving 1.1 million users without service until further notice. The company is also discontinuing the rollout on iOS until further notice, and will likely wait until it can bring a new Android version that lacks interplay with the leaked one.

According to a blog post, the BBM teams “continue to work around the clock to bring BBM to Android and iPhone, but only when it’s ready and we know it will live up to your expectations of BBM.” Existing iOS users — those whose countries had access up ’til now — will continue to be able to use the app, but the leaked Android version should no longer work.

No word on when BlackBerry will resume the rollout, but we’re anxiously awaiting its arrival. This issue does not affect BBM on BlackBerry platforms.

But it's still pretty impressive 1.1 million on a unofficial app.

It's unfortunate because I'm excited about this BBM launch not because it's Blackberry Messenger but because the layout and UI looks so CLEAN and fresh. If I can get a large friend base on it, the application may be promising and more appealing than WhatsApp (even though the latest updates from WhatsApp have come along ways since the release of the original application)

It's great that you don't use/need/want BBM, but there are other people in this world other than you.

So you are basically saying they should just give up, pack up, and close up shop? Why even try right? They only employ about 10000 people. Finding ways to monetize service revenue is what they should be doing and BBM is one of them.

During my last year of owning a blackberry, I found myself using whatsapp more than bbm as more of my friends were switching to other phones.

BBM launching today
This is the news you’ve been waiting for! I am thrilled to tell you that we are about to officially resume our rollout of BBM for Android and iPhone customers around the globe!* In the next few hours, people will start seeing BBM in Google Play, the App Store and in select Samsung App Stores – where it will be free to download.

The demand for BBM on Android and BBM on iPhone continues to be amazing. About six million people signed up for information about BBM at BBM.com. As you know, in just seven hours, about one million Android users were using the unreleased version of BBM for Android. What you don’t know is that more than one million people have found creative ways to “side load” BBM on their iPhone. This is incredible.

To help manage this unprecedented pent up demand for BBM, we are implementing a simple line-up system to ensure a smooth roll out. Here’s how it is going to work…

BBM Roll Out Details:
1.Download BBM – the easiest way is to visit BBM.com from your Android or iPhone browser*
2.Once you install the app, open it, and enter your email address to hold your spot in line
3.We will email you as soon as you reach the front of the line and can start using BBM

If you are among the millions that took the time to sign up at BBM.com, you can start using BBM immediately without waiting in line.* If you didn’t sign up in advance, don’t worry – we are focused on moving millions of customers through the line as fast as possible.

Our team of developers and engineers has been working around the clock to bring you BBM – and make some upgrades while we’re at it – and some incredible work has been done. I look forward to sharing more of this with you here, on Inside BlackBerry, soon.

For updates on how quickly the line is moving you can follow @BBM on Twitter. I will be back tomorrow with another post to provide you with an update on the line-up and to share more detail about the work the team has done over the last several weeks.

Lastly, thank you for your patience. We know you’re excited (we are too!) and we look forward to having you join us on BBM.

*Samsung customers in Sub-Sahara Africa can download BBM today from the Samsung Apps store. iPhone and other Android users in Africa will be able to download the app in three days’ time.

Try this bypass?

Download BBM for either Android or iOS

Run the app, fill in your email address as per normal, click next

Once your email is registered, force close the app. On iOS, this can be done by tapping your home button twice and swiping the app away.

On Android, you can go to Settings, Apps, BBM and stop the app from running.

After the app has been closed, go ahead and reopen it. From there, you should be able to create an account or login.

In whatsapp 1 check mark means it has been delivered to whatsapps servers, two check marks means it has been delivered to the persons device.

It has nothing to do with reading the message.

I really think those who say whatsapp is better and they won't switch over are wrong, and they will eventually switch over.

Everyone I have ever asked that had a blackberry 3 or 4 years ago, swears up and down that they are going to DL it immediately and go back to using it.

Been using it since yesterday on my iphone 5.

Id rather use it to communicate with my android friends that whatsapp. It's very smooth and easy to use.It does have limitations though.

Remembered by old BBM account name and logged in with it. I still have like 30 friends on the berry...

It's just another platform to communicate with people. Many people don't want to text due to contract limitations and therefore opt for bbm or whataspp.

people in different groups, cultures, nationalities... use different programs to chat.

if one of your values in life is communicating and keeping in touch with people, you would probably use every chat program out there like I do.

north americans mostly use whatsapp

chinese mostly use wechat

taiwanese mostly use line chat

the koreans i know use kakao

etc so on so forth.

so really, the answer depends on how many friends you have, how global your friends/contacts are, and how willing you are to keep in contact with them.

For everyone that doesnt understand why BBM is better than whatsapp, you never had BBM back in its heyday.

If you use groups on whatsapp you are limited to 15 members. On BBM this increases to 30. Uncompressed picture sharing is only available if you email pictures or if you use BBM. Both MMS and whatsapp compress pictures.

BBM has proper Read message alerts. BBM lets you control who you add, no need to have peoples numbers, and it does not automatically add people who you do not want on your BBM.

This among much more. BBM is superior to whatsapp in every way. Its just a matter of time before everyone migrates back.

The reports of this I have seen were from when someone tried to Bypass waiting for the email by force closing the app. In this scenario the app starts to behave in a very odd way.

The only way to successfully bypass the email waiting period, is to get someone who has a BBID and enter their information, then when prompted sign up for a new account.

Thats because the Font that BBM uses "HelveticaNeue-Italic" just so happened to be removed from the iphone in patch 7.0.3, no idea why which is causing bbm to crash. You would think they would only add fonts and not remove, along with the timing....

So, what's the bluray of messaging?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've had the app for a little over a day now, it's a working messaging system but certainly not like WhatsApp or iMessage. I hope WhatsApp will take the things BBM did right here and incorporate them into an update in the near future. I like knowing when and who is typing a message in a group chat.

I also like the idea of having a status change page to see what's going on, keeps me engaged.

There is very little customization options in this application and a few glitches... ie: pictures stalling when I try to send them.

multiperson chat can only send voice notes

you actually need to create the multichat by creating group in order to add pictures and vids. Then the pictures can be commented by the users sorta like facebook.

It's one of the things I don't like about bbm

Ulic Qel-Droma

bbm wont make a come back. it's just a secondary chat app.

whatsapp, wechat have it all.

bbm...
where's my auto add contacts? i have to manually add everyone? wtf.
where's my voice chat?
where's my share location?
where's my custom notifications for individuals or groups?

the only thing i like about it is, it's not attached to your number, there's an actual account.

if they fix ALL of that, then it'll be at par...

but most of all BBM is lacking user base.

looking at a global scale... whatsapp and wechat beat all other chats (line comes close especially if you're japanese or taiwanese).

this is coming from a guy that uses every chat program out there all the time.

BBM as of right now, is not convenient enough.

lol easy fan boy...this thread is a testament to all the "positive things" about the new BBM for Android/iOS.

Everyone seems to have the same concerns, it's simply not the same as it used to be.

This is an interface designed off of Blackberry 10. The iPhone and most Android devices do not implement swipe away features and so navigating through the app is tedious.

As mentioned earlier, the features are very bare with these multi-platform versions. Many features we used to enjoy are no longer there. Group chats are awful on BBM now, at least after using WhatsApp. I do like the idea of being able to comment on photos but I don't want go into a separate window to view, post and comment on them, that's just a little more work than needed.

If I really wanted BBM to work and use it, I would rather pick up a Bold 9900 or equivalent and use the services on there. Unfortunately, it's a lose-lose situation because that Bold 9900 would be good for messaging and ONLY messaging lol.

Purely

I don't see a point in multi-person chat and a separate group chat. You can only send voice notes in multi-chat... but can't send them in a group chat? There are no custom notifications... no sharing pictures, videos, location (useful), 30 ppl limit. Meme405, how can you honestly say BBM is better than Whatsapp?

What I do like about BBM: 1 on 1 conversations
The BBM pins are separate from phone number, and there are proper read/send messages (far better than Whatsapp imo).

BBM is a lot slower than Whatsapp in terms of loading messages. It doesn't let you send media or files to groups (at least in the iOS version).

However it has been great for groups I feel. You don't have to expose your phone number to everyone in your group, all they can see is your pin, and if you don't want people to add you just click ignore.

I still use it for groups, but when it comes to one on one, I stick to whatsapp.

I felt that if anything, BBM groups are the worst part about the application. Having to go to the main screen then clicking on the group and then clicking on the photos to add or comment on them is really annoying.

Not to mention, the keyboard takes up half the screen so when you have groups with 10 ppl + you usually have to catch up with messages, you only get to see 2-3 messages at a time on the screen.

Can't send voice notes is huge and locations are fun.

What I really do like is the option of "lists" and "events".

For example, back in my whatsapp group we needed to organize an event, and it involved a list of who's going and who has paid (and how much), who's bringing what item, etc what we are missing. If we had the option of lists similar to bbm, it would have made our lives a lot easier.

I can't even zoom in pictures on my s2 lol, my other friends with androids can't as well.

No voice notes (actually really useful), No location sending..

Double tap to get the pic full screen and then pinch to zoom. Well that's how it works on z10 anyways.

BBM for IOS and Android will have BBM voice, Channel, faster/easier sharing and more emoticons in 2014! pretty exciting stuff.

Messages for Android/Iphone disappears after a week or two. Does this happen on Blackberry's as well?

I have messages with my GF since day one=p
I hope it's just a glitch

My GF has a Iphone 4S and all her BBM messages from day 1 are still there. Must be a glitch? I know they released a performance update not long after the initial release, not sure if you updated yours or not. Try deleting and re-installing

Yes all the time. Sometimes they only appear when I open the app and I will get a bunch at once.
