: Hike, Bike, Quad or 4x4 - Where did RS go today?

1. If it's vaguely outdoors related - post it up!
2. Pictures are always welcome, but not at all necessary.

Seeing as fall is upon us and I personally tend to get out more I figured I'd start this up. I just got back from camping out at Peaches and Creme Falls, which I discovered on the first RS trip out to the Elaho river (thanks again, RS - never would have scouted campsites that far from my normal stomping grounds). Saw 2 people leaving the falls as we were pulling up but didn't see another soul on the Elaho main. Probably were the only people for 20kms in any direction last night. Fairly warm too - I had to have two windows open to get to sleep. Probably didn't need one of my heavier bags...

Thanks! This time around there were only the two vehicles so I could hammer on the brakes and take pictures of things. Too bad I gave away my dslr.

The pathy kept up behind me the entire way and I wasn't exactly going slow. Traction and dampening are no problem for it. Clearance is however.

Went through Whipsaw a few weeks back for an end of the summer camping trip.. We tried to find the god damn lake and couldnt lol... so we ended up on top of the mountain and just camped there.. Was so much fun.. My truck is fairly stock and it didnt have too much of a problem.. just have to be careful on the super dips if you have side bars and a low front bumper.. I have an iron cross, 35s and about a 3ish inch lift... Was fun AS HELL!!!

Been to triangle beach almost everyday since I fish there and hit up some trails after. It's never a dull moment at triangle.

As I was going out to Agassiz to help my mother pick up a side of beef, I decided to take advantage of the nice weather this afternoon to go for a hike up around Hicks Lake. Pretended I was 12 again and chased some geese into the water (where they smugly mocked me from the middle of the lagoon knowing I wasn't about to follow them in). Some people up there up there fishing but the general consensus was that it's just not well stocked anymore and none of the guys I chatted with had anything tangible to show for their time. On the way out I was just about to help some parks staff who'd managed to run down their battery and then I realized that my jumper cables are in my recovery gear container which I took out as I'd only expected to go out to pick up the meat. Oops. Definitely time to finish my rear storage compartments.

Oh yeah and while we were at Hicks at the initial day use area, I noticed one bench that I can only imagine is a wheelchair accessible picnic table. I don't think I've ever seen one of those before.

Neato. I guess I generally don't venture into the parks all that often as if I'm trying to get out into nature I'd rather do it away from the crowds but I figured I'd have seen one before. From my recent memory I know there aren't any at Ross, Silver Beach or Cinnemousun Narrows (the latter obviously not as it's boat access only).

So I headed up to Kelowna for a week yesterday - kicked it off today with exploring out around Myra Canyon trying to remember where all my old camping spots were:

Hopefully the weather stays at least kind of nice for the next couple of days and I can try to hit up some of the little lakes out here.

Don't worry guys - soon I'll be back home and probably slow down a bit. My phone died so I took less photos than usual but oh well.

Today my friends up here and I headed out on the Beaver Lake FSR to do some exploring and hit up some lakes. We hit up Beaver Lake, Lost Lake and I think we drove past Echo Lake but I can't confirm that. The Beaver Lake Recreation Site was pretty rugged but in a great spot, and is the first campsite I've ever been to with cows wandering around grazing in it. One appeared to be policing the outhouse there too. Only ran into a lone hunter in the bush and a few people around the lakes; I was a little surprised that there weren't more people out trying to fish or hunt. Took a couple of offshoot trails along the way that I thought might lead up to higher ground and better viewpoints but those almost all ended with us getting into an ugly spot and realizing I was probably on an ATV trail. Reverse gear got a good workout today.

This afternoon I had a bit of free time so I went out to Chilliwack Lake for a drive and to try to find some fall colour in the trees. The overcast skies didn't help but this has been a pretty poor year thus far for leaves changing colours. The occasional gold and even less common burst of orange or red from what looked like mostly vine maple are the sole highlights of a dreary end to summer's green. Lots of brown and ugly brown-green leaves already down on the ground. I can't win them all I guess (and after experiencing four Ontario and Quebec autumns in a row I'm not sure I should even be trying...)

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x108/Brianrieta/Toyota%204Runner/IMG_00001302_hdr_zpsa288d3be.jpg (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/Brianrieta/media/Toyota%204Runner/IMG_00001302_hdr_zpsa288d3be.jpg.html)

After the persistent rain forced me back into my 4Runner I headed back and went on the recently rebuilt/cleared road heading up Ford Mountain. I rarely make it out quite that far as I normally camp up Pierce Mountain or Creek if I'm headed out that way so it was neat to go up something new. After noticing progress on a parking area at the Post Creek/Greendrop trailhead (thank god, no more digging my vehicle out from the side after snowplows run through) I thought maybe the new look was a new parking area for a hiking trail up Ford but the roads all over and up to near the summit were in remarkably good shape.

No pictures but it's vaguely outdoors related. Finally took the Pathfinder out on it's first trailer haul session. lol. Had to do some landfill dump runs and the insurance on the Blazer ran out a few days ago. Apparently no one sells a flat 4 (three male, one female) to circle 7 pin (male) adapter, so I had to make my own in order to legally run the trailer. Also got a chance to try out the 4x4 on my property by hauling a bunch of wood up a steep hill to the burn pit. Decided to give it a try instead of using the tractor. Even with currently crappy tires on it, it still made it up the wet grassy hill like a champ.

Took the sidekick to a lookout over buntzen lake. I've had it for 2 years and average is 6.1L/100km with the vw turbodiesel engine. Really want to do a 3rd gen 4runner or tacoma vw tdi swap now.

My recovery kit consisted of a Toyota with vw turbodiesel swap

Nice. Well in an attempt to blast the last of this cold or flu out of me I decided to go hiking and try to get some fresh air. Went out up to the Mt. Hope Lookout to see if a good grind wouldn't help. Started up the hill, took like 6 pictures and realized I hadn't plugged in my phone and the battery was about dead so all you get is the sign with me posing like an idiot blocking it and some hoar that looked cool. When I got back down I plugged in my phone and then took a few shots along the river and then drove home. Beautiful day to be outside.

How did the new tires do/which do you have on?

Soundy
01-05-2014, 09:59 PM
Rolling on the Silent Armors... man, I am frikken LOVING these tires. Only time I actually got stuck was when the right rear sank deep in a hole, other than that they just wouldn't quit. Quiet on the road, way smoother/less twitchy ride than the old LTX's. My ancient little compressor is just about dead so I drove all the way home with 20-25 PSI in them (first tire done got the most... last one got very little) and still had a pretty good ride on the pavement.

This lack of snow has gotten ridiculous. I went up to Chilliwack Lake the other day to bomb around in the 4r and do a little hiking and there's pretty much a thin layer of ice over everything but no snow to be seen. Decided to go out to Cypress on Sunday then to do some snowshoeing with friends and I can tell you that it was a horrible failure. The upper trails seemed to be closed and many of the lower trails that were open almost all had patches of no snow at all. Awful. Spent like 2 hours just sitting around drinking at Hollyburn Lodge drinking beer instead. Not a total loss, I guess. :5shots:

Well, before the snow (strike that, rain...) comes this weekend I figured I'd take a trip up the Coquihalla and do a little exploring and get some pics of the area I'm trying to con some friends into camping later this month. Went up the Peers Creek FSR to the HBC 1849 Heritage Trail trailhead is and got some shots up there. It's a fairly common summer camping spot but I tend to think it's in a pretty good place for winter camping too (outhouse which of course doesn't smell because everything is frozen solid, running water, middle of nowhere but not too far from town, covered area, firepit, benches... what more could you want). The route up is just packed snow (i.e. ice) but not that slippery. There was one steep section of an offshoot trail I had to air down a bit and locker up but all in all not terrible anywhere today. Let my shitty BlackBerry photos commence:

Went out today with the intent of doing some snowshoeing but I ended up just stopping everywhere I could get some photos and did some exploring. Went down some side trails but with all the moisture in the valley it was pretty icy and being solo I didn't really want to stop and get stuck anywhere but some pictures to enjoy anyways:

With the exception of all the dead spots in my basement suite, I haven't really gotten out of cell reception in ages so when some friends expressed an interest in getting out yesterday I hopped at the opportunity to get out. Went up Slesse Creek and threw around some lead, cooked some sausages, made some smores and generally relaxed. Pretty much perfect summer solstice.

do you air down on fsr's?

I generally can't be bothered. Depends where I'm going/how far/how fast I plan on running in the straight sections, etc. I got spoiled having on-board air in the past so having to make it all the way back to my house or to a gas station normally deadens my desire to air down. Realistically speaking though if there is air anywhere near the trailhead then yeah, you should air down.

Sweet!

So a while ago I'd spoken with my mother about not having roadtripped anywhere in some time and so the other day she asked me whether I wanted to head out to the Southern Okanagan somewhere this weekend. I naturally said yes because I had a feeling I was going to get a chance to get her 14 JGC off pavement somewhere. After plans to meet with an old Kelowna roommate in Penticton for lunch Friday fell through we were no longer in any rush to get out there and ended up taking five hours just to go from Chilliwack to Princeton. First stop was at the Hope Slide lookout as I hadn't out as far as Sunshine Valley on the #3 in years and probably not at the lookout in 7+. The Hope Slide for those of you who aren't aware of it was the largest landslide ever recorded in Canada when in January 1965 the SW slope of Johnson Peak collapsed. 47 million or so cubic meters of debris came down killing 4 people on the highway while ending up to 85 meters deep and almost 3 kilometers wide.

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x108/Brianrieta/osoyoos/IMG_20140711_100624_zps3350b667.jpg

Despite my woefully inappropriate hiking footwear, we scrambled all over the rocks there for a while and found what I assume must have been used to load trucks with rocks/gravel made around the slide area during the construction of the rebuilt section of the highway. If someone else has a better idea of what the structure was used for please let me know!

In amongst the rubble of the mountain the flowers really pop against the grey rocky backdrop. Does anyone know what this orange flower is? The flower head was no more than a loonie's size.

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x108/Brianrieta/osoyoos/IMG_20140711_102119_zps12d02a42.jpg

We carried on and upon reaching the boundaries of Manning Park I took the wheel. I took pretty much the first opportunity I had to head off up the side of a hill on an unkempt gravel road and some way up found a large clearing that had large areas covered in mulch and just past it what looked like old tent pads returning to nature. Must have been some sort of camp type area at some point in the past? In more recent times it's obviously somebody's backwoods bush party area as there was no shortage of pallets around the centerpiece of a rather immobilized truck:

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x108/Brianrieta/osoyoos/IMG_20140711_121713_hdr_zps1d19b3bc.jpg

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x108/Brianrieta/osoyoos/IMG_20140711_122445_hdr_zps722cfc13.jpg

After that we carried on up another 8k or so of washboarded gravel to the beginning of the Heather Trail. We wandered around the trails around the parking area at the trailhead a bit although didn't get much for photos as the flies and mosquitos were hungry and we were the meal.

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x108/Brianrieta/osoyoos/IMG_20140711_125426_hdr_zps481cdac9.jpg

At that point we were pretty hungry so we carried on to Princeton and while not outdoors or 4x4 related I thought it was cool that the exact spot of the random road I turned down and parked on the side of to check my phone happened to be 1967 terminus of highway 5, back before the Coquihalla was punched through from Hope to Merritt.

This was unfortunately the best photo I could get of the old mines up on the hill behind Hedley and basically after Princeton I'd lost most of my will to take photos which didn't reappear until we went to the Osoyoos Desert Model Railroad which was fantastic but that's for another thread. I'm getting rambly so enough... anyways here are the last 3 photos: {Hedley mines; looking down the hill towards Osoyoos; overlooking Keremeos facing west down the highway}

Had a fail camping experience just this past friday. Went to the west side of Harrison lake thinking we would stop some where randomly, well after going down trail after trail and finding people already set up.

we decided to go to the first spot we found which was right off the FSR well while backing up the truck my friend drove over a sharp rock and put a hole in the tire not to big of a deal so we look under the truck (it was borrowed) and there was no spare tire...

Ended up driving home at 10:30 at night and stopped like 10 times to put air in the tire. The pump we brought with us couldn't pump the tire over 30psi

In amongst the rubble of the mountain the flowers really pop against the grey rocky backdrop. Does anyone know what this orange flower is? The flower head was no more than a loonie's size.

I did eventually figure it out - it's called Orange Hawkweed. Pilosella aurantiaca - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilosella_aurantiaca)

BC ministry of agriculture considers it a noxious weed.

Anyways, spent Wednesday afternoon at the Fraser quadding and generally freezing our asses off before heading out to Harrison Hot Springs for dinner. Didn't take much for pictures of course with the cold:

Went up the Squamish Valley with the family today. The road was covered with snow and ice, but it was an easy drive with my studded tires. The boys loved the snow and I got my wife to try out the 20g for 15 rounds.

Had a fun trip toodling around Vedder this past Sunday. Had some 15 rigs in total, all Jeeps except one Tacoma (guy's first time wheeling it, did pretty good!)

There's me bringing up the rear:

I've been sick as hell for the past week and going crazy lying around the house rather than out during this (in my humble opinion) prime camping weather. Just took a quick trip out into the hills to get some vitamin D. Sometimes when you are sick and get down it's hard to remember that this sorta place is like 25 minutes from my house. Can't get over this cold or whatever soon enough.

tools of the trade for the day

brought along my bark river canadian camp knife II, my custom buck 110 (koa, nickle and s30v), my gransfors bruks scandanavian forest axe and my new winchester 1892 take down in 44 mag.

i brought a variety of loads to play with for my new rifle and wanted to see each one shot through it.

out of all the rounds, the hornady 225gr ftx felt like it did a number on the targets i hit.

this can was hit with the 225gr ftx and didnt even move

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u75/jca21/IMG_0021_zpsfmccaakn.jpg

the other cans that were hit with the 300gr stuff simply disintegrated.

onto the rifle

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u75/jca21/IMG_0019_zpsvyrnwvg8.jpg

the rifle itself is quite nice. its a winchester 1892 take down model chambered in .44 rem mag

it has a 7+1 capacity and cycled rounds with ease.

there is a tang mounted manual safety which is quite easy to manipulate and doesnt bother me at all. i own the chiappa 1892 alaskan in .44 mag with the 20" barrel as well which has no safety and i didnt feel like the winchesters safety negatively impacted the rifle.

the barrel length of the rifle is 16" and feel extremely handy and light. my one gripe with the rifle is the sights and i'll be replacing the buckhorn rear sights with a set of skinner apeture sights like the ones on my chiappa 1892 alaskan.

this will be my backpacking/truck gun for when i'm out in the woods for a few reasons. its handy, lights, breaks down into a small package and can pack a wallop especially with the 300gr hardcast +P stuff. i'm confident that if i were to encounter any aggressive animal whether they be coyotes, cougars or black bears i'd be able to take them down with the .44 mag.

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u75/jca21/IMG_0032_zps3hhmavcs.jpg

all in all a good day. nice to be out and about.

Couple years ago, a friend from New York I'd only ever known from online came up to Vancouver for work and wanted to tour the mountains. She loved the trip to Britannia, Whistler, and Callaghan Lake.

Last week she was up again for work, and again took a couple extra days to visit. We did some exploring up Garnet Creek FSR and ended up at Clear Creek, first time I'd ever been there.

So I rode the gixxer this afternoon before work, decided to just putter around Richmond. Ended up going to triangle beach.

So.. Aware me on triangle beach. There seems to be a few big puddles and a couple thin tracks in the grass/sand. Are you allowed to ATV or dirt bike there? Is there much in the way of patrol out there?. All I saw was a Bc hydro vehicle checking power lines, and a creepishly rapey camper van

People quad, dirt bike, 4x4 there all the time. No one comes to hassle you unless a fire is raging out of control. Groups of peeps usually head out on Friday and Saturday night for fires, drinking, 4x4'ing, etc. During the day it can be more family orientated. ie: dad and kids biking,4x4ing, etc. I've been going there since the early 90's and never been hassled at all. I'm surprised Triangle is somewhat new to you considering your born and raised. I'd consider it a right of passage for all Richmondites.

It's definitely a destination for shenanigans more than anything. Drinking and fires are usually the highlight. As for wheeling, there isn't that much there other than a few paths. The sandy woopty woos by the fence are fun though. It serves as a testing ground more than anything. Back before the shipyard full of containers was there it was WAY better. Much more space to have fun. There is a fair sized sandy area to your left as you drive down the paved road before you hit gravel. That area is pretty good. Most of the dirt bikes hit up that area. Decent wheeling there too but some spots are narrow and clearly made for bikes only.

What does FSR stand for, for fucks sake

The other word people might see thrown around when discussing names and forestry roads and stuff is "bench" which in geology is the term for a thin, flatish strip of land with distinct steeper sections on both sides of it. You'll see roads named like that all over the Okanagan but in our context it'll tell you that the FSR probably has some pretty good drop-offs on one side (and therefore generally good views). The last pictures I posted to this thread were taken up Chilliwack Bench FSR for example which parallels Chilliwack Lake Rd on the other side of the river except up on the hillside rather than at the valley floor. Over the last year or two I've been taking a few more risks with my subaru to see what it is capable of. Tried to get up to Mount Cheam today but the cross ditches proved to be too risky for my liking so i turned back after getting halfway up the road. Ended up hiking up to Lindeman lake instead which was quite pleasant, gotta love those koolaid blue lakes.

Besides that, the car handles pretty damn well on most fsr's that I've ventured on. ground clearance is always a deal breaker though. Looking into getting a forester turbo next and getting it lifted so I can conquer the majority of the roads around this province.
Here's a few flicks from some adventures from the summer so far.

last month I went on a hot springs tour/lilloet loop. Stopped at skookumchuk hot springs, keyhole hot springs, birkenhead lake, anderson lake, lilloet and a few random stops along the trans canada. Had to do most of the lilloet river road to skookumchuk in pouring rain at twilight. Had a little to much fun trying to be a rally driver on some of those clear corners and got the car nice and dirty.

Decided to take a random road before I got to lilloet to get a better view of a waterfall. The road was a little too rough and I didn't have a good idea of where it went so i turned around.

I'm living in Pemberton now so if you guys are wheeling up around that way give me a shout! I'm always up for a drive and I'd love to start exploring the area.
