Alice Munro is 1st Canadian woman to win Nobel literature prize - Arts & Entertainment - CBC News (http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/alice-munro-is-1st-canadian-woman-to-win-nobel-literature-prize-1.1958383)

Alice Munro wins the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature, becoming the first Canadian woman to take the award since its launch in 1901.

Munro, 82, only the 13th woman given the award, was lauded by the Swedish Academy during the Nobel announcement in Stockholm as the "master of the contemporary short story."

"We're not saying just that she can say a lot in just 20 pages — more than an average novel writer can — but also that she can cover ground. She can have a single short story that covers decades, and it works," said Peter Englund, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy.

Reached in British Columbia by CBC News on Thursday morning, Munro said she always viewed her chances of winning the Nobel as "one of those pipe dreams" that "might happen, but it probably wouldn't."

Can't believe this hasn't been posted yet.

We have another Nobel laureate. And a woman for the first time! :)

I used to visit Munro's book during my undergrad at UVic and really enjoyed her short stories. I think I still have one of her books I had her autographed when I was there. Need to dig it out... I'm gonna flip it like ****!!! :ilied::fuckthatshit:

I was listening to CBC Radio at the time they found out and woke her up at 4am to talk to her. She was surprised more women hadn't won the award.

Considering people on here are fairly patriotic, I found it hard to believe that no one posted when a Canadian wins one of the most prestigious award in the world. Whether one is interested in such particular field or not.

Besides, I am sure people on RS read from time to time.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see this on RS, albeit shocked. Canadian Literature receives relatively little recognition even within our country, never mind internationally.
