is this classfied in japan as a kei car, or is it bigger?
at 77 ft-lbs of torque... can this car even pull it's own weight?
how much does it weigh?

Change in management.
Nissan has lost a lot of ground in terms of what enthusiasts want vs. what they are producing for the soccer moms. The GTR is great, but it's still a car many cannot afford, the 370z is just a G37 with an even uglier body.
People want a 240z in a world where producing such a car is difficult due to strict regulations, Toyota and Subaru have proven that it's possible, but it doesn't change the fact that Nissan loves to re-use chassis', and all of their current chassis' are large and heavy. Designing a car from scratch and tooling a factory to produce such a car is an expensive and time consuming venture, I wish they'd do it, but it doesn't seem likely.

I can see Kei cars being successful in North America.
More people are getting conscious about gas mileage, and kei cars are CHEAP. They can be bought from $7,500-$8,000 range.
Sure, you can argue they're slow and ugly, however Smart car was not exactly a good looking/fast car either.
Also kei cars can carry more people, luggage, get better gas mileage than smart car too.

The modern kei cars are not bad. Japan made this standard that kei cars must be just as safe as normal cars.
They are safe enough to pass North American regulations.
In fact, Mitsubishi i is actually a kei car in Japan.
In North America, 660cc engine was replaced with electric motor(Mitsubishi i-Miev), but chassis/platform are all identical.

not quite correct. the north american version of the japanese i-miev is larger:
Mitsubishi i-MiEV - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_i-MiEV)
The U.S.-only version is enlarged, has redesigned front and rear bumpers,[133] and includes more features than the Japanese and European versions in order to meet crash standards, government mandates, and the preferences of the U.S. consumers. The American version is 285 millimetres (11.2 in) longer than the Japanese version, 110 millimetres (4.3 in) wider,[4] and slightly taller. It also has advanced airbags and the mandated tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS), has an upgraded interior and features more accessories.

I think you're forgetting the fact that the car is actually tiny and probably doesn't fit the majority of us North American folk comfortably. That and the fact that the Miata has more power, aftermarket availability, and is far more easily attainable.

IMO this car wouldn't do well in NA because the majority of consumers here are obsessed with power and size.
The FR-S/BRZ has 200 hp and lots of people complained (and still do) about how it's not enough... I can't imagine a car 3/4 the size with less than 50% the power doing well here at all. Not to mention that this thing would likely not be fun for a 50+km highway drive which is pretty common esp in the US.
That being said, it would be cool to have Honda cash in on the resurgence of cheap RWD "fun" cars... if they made this car a little bigger and put a nice DOHC 4-banger in it, sort of like a baby S2000, I'd definitely consider dropping the money for one.
