Wow.... if someone had bet me 10 years ago that the Mustang would have an IRS and flat plane crank 10 years later, I would have lost a lot of money to that person.
10 years ago the mustang did have an IRS. sure it was the cobra that had it, but it was still there..

Okay Chevrolet, the ball is in your court. Ford served up one hell of a rebuttal to the track-focused Camaro Z/28, introducing the limited-production Mustang GT350R, complete with over 500 horsepower, over 400 pound-feet of torque and freaking carbon-fiber wheels. Carbon-fiber wheels. Seriously.
It's because of those 19-inch hoops, along with some other changes, that Ford was able to slice 130 pounds from the already lightweight GT350 Track Pack. The wheels are responsible for a 13-pound reduction in unsprung weight per corner, while the removal of such superfluous things like the air conditioning, stereo, rear seats, trunk carpet, backup camera and tire inflator accounts for the rest of the weight reduction.
Along with the lower weight, Ford has thoroughly reworked the GT350's aerodynamics, adding a simply monstrous rear wing and diffuser, along with vented wheel wells, a new hood vent that both extracts heat and reduces lift. Beside the aero aids, Ford has shod the carbon-fiber wheels in ultra-grippy Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, just to guarantee the shiny side remains up.
Ford retained the standard GT350's 5.2-liter, flat-pane V8, Torsen limited-slip differential (complete with a 3.73 rear axle ratio), although as power figures haven't been published for the standard car, there's no way to know whether the GT350R received a power bump.
What we do know, though, is that the GT350R will not be limited to the track. While that's certainly its natural habitat, owners will be able to register and drive this monster on public roads.
Take a look at the official press release on the GT350R, available below. And also be sure to have a peek at both Ford's stock photos of the new car, as well as our full gallery of live images, direct from the Blue Oval's Detroit Auto Show press conference home at Joe Louis Arena.

SHELBY GT350R MUSTANG: MOST TRACK-CAPABLE PRODUCTION MUSTANG EVER BUILT COMING TO U.S., CANADA LATER THIS YEAR
A combination of changes to aerodynamics and suspension tuning to the new Shelby® GT350R Mustang leads to most race-ready road-legal Mustang ever
Significant engineering innovations result in weight savings, aero improvements to benefit on-track performance; Ford is the first major automaker to introduce carbon fiber wheels as standard equipment on Shelby GT350R Mustang
New Shelby GT350R, a limited-production performance Mustang, will be available later this year
Ford today unveiled the new Shelby® GT350R Mustang, the most track-ready road-going production Mustang ever built.
In 1965, Ford and Carroll Shelby developed a road-racing version of the popular Ford Mustang – the Shelby GT350 Competition model. Lighter, more powerful and with a highly developed suspension, it is one of the most iconic racing Mustangs ever produced.
Arriving later this year, the new Shelby GT350R has been designed and engineered in the same spirit, delivering never-before-seen track capability from a Mustang – thanks to innovations in aerodynamics, chassis engineering and light-weighting.
"The Shelby GT350R Mustang is a no-compromise car in the pursuit of maximum track capability," said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. "It is a thoroughbred street car making use of technology and ingenuity to deliver performance few enthusiasts have ever experienced."
The car features the first-ever production V8 from Ford with a flat-plane crankshaft – the most powerful naturally aspirated engine Ford has ever produced – plus a specially tuned suspension. It is fitted with revised spring rates and antiroll bars, lower ride height, unique track-tuned alignment settings, revised bushings and jounce bumpers, cross-axis ball joints in the front suspension, and revised calibration controlling the MagneRide dampers.
"The Shelby GT350R Mustang is a car with the nimbleness and power delivery you want on a road course," said Nair. "This isn't just about horsepower. The Shelby GT350R is an all-around balanced athlete – one that is extraordinarily precise and agile."
Track technology for the street
Lightweight carbon fiber wheels are standard on Shelby GT350R, making Ford the first major automaker to introduce this innovative wheel technology as standard equipment.
Carbon fiber wheels have been offered on only a handful of exotic supercars and will benefit Shelby GT350R performance by shaving critical unsprung weight and reducing rolling inertia. The 19x11-inch front and 19x11.5-inch rear wheels provide approximately 13 pounds of unsprung weight reduction per wheel and offer higher levels of stiffness than equivalent aluminum wheels.
The lightweight wheels will be shod in Michelin's top-shelf Pilot Sport Cup 2 high-performance tires with rubber compound and a construction unique to Shelby GT350R. This combination of incredibly stiff and light wheels with bespoke tires offers customers exceptional steering feel and levels of performance.
Weight reduction in pursuit of performance
Ford engineers delivered against aggressive targets for weight reduction on the Shelby GT350R. If a part did not make the car faster around a road course, it was considered for deletion.
Items removed include air conditioning, the stereo system, rear seats, trunk floorboard and carpet, backup camera and emergency tire sealer and inflator. Exhaust resonators also have been removed for weight savings with the benefit of creating a sharper exhaust tone.
Shelby GT350R is more than 130 pounds lighter than the Shelby GT350 Track Pack model, which has proven its durability in multiple 24-hour racetrack tests.
For customers seeking more comfort in their Shelby GT350R, Ford is offering an optional Electronics Package. Included is dual-zone air conditioning, 8-inch touch screen with navigation, seven-speaker audio system, turn signal mirrors and more.
Aggressive aerodynamics
Shelby GT350R has been optimized for aerodynamic excellence. Details including the hood vent for heat extraction and lift reduction, underbody belly pans front and rear, an aggressive diffuser, vented wheel wells and turbulence-reducing fender vents, wheel air curtains and side skirts all remain on Shelby GT350R, but the car's downforce capability has been increased.
Revisions to the front splitter maximize downforce, while an all-new high-efficiency carbon fiber rear wing has been added in anticipation of competition. The wing moves the vehicle's center of pressure rearward while improving downforce and lift balance – ideal for high-speed track work.
"Shelby GT350R's highly efficient aerodynamics, innovative light-weighting and world-class chassis deliver a truly spectacular driving experience that makes you feel like a professional racing driver," said Kerry Baldori, Ford Performance chief functional engineer.
World-class powertrain
The new 5.2-liter dual-overhead-cam V8 engine is the first-ever production V8 from Ford with a flat-plane crankshaft – an architecture typically found only in racing applications or exotic European sports cars.
Unlike traditional V8s, where the connecting rods are attached to the crankshaft at 90-degree intervals, this design evenly spaces all crank pins at 180-degree intervals to optimize high-speed engine breathing. It is the most powerful naturally aspirated production Ford engine ever, with more than 500 horsepower and more than 400 lb.-ft. of torque.
An air-to-oil engine oil cooler typically found only on race cars maintains engine temperatures under the most severe conditions, as does a standard cooler for the six-speed manual transmission.
A Ford-tuned limited-slip Torsen differential with 3.73 axle ratio is optimized for cornering grip and straight-line traction, while an electronically modulated rear-mounted air-to-oil differential cooler maintains ideal temperatures during track driving.
Dedicated R design details
Aside from carbon fiber wheels, larger front splitter and rear wing, Shelby GT350R features distinct design details. Exterior touches include red painted brake calipers, red pin striping at the edges of the optional over-the-top racing stripes and Shelby GT350R badging. Inside is high-contrast red stitching, Shelby GT350R badging and the D-shaped steering wheel fitted with a red center mark at the top.
New breed of performance
The limited-production Shelby GT350R will be available in the United States and Canada later this year, and is one of more than 12 new Ford Performance vehicles coming by 2020.
"This is the pinnacle of performance Mustangs today," said Dave Pericak, director, Ford Performance. "The Shelby GT350R Mustang lays the groundwork for a story that will play out for years to come on the track and the street."

Ford Shelby GT350R Mustang thrashes Camaro Z28?s ?Ring laptime | Evo (http://www.evo.co.uk/ford/mustang/15060/ford-shelby-gt350r-mustang-thrashes-camaro-z28-s-ring-laptime)
Shelby’s tuned Mustang has lapped the Nordshleife in 7min 32.19sec
Shelby has thrown a punch at arch-rival Chevrolet on the European continent, by lapping the Nuburgring in a reported 7min 32.19sec in its GT350R Mustang. That’s more than 5sec faster than the Chevrolet Camaro Z28’s 7min 37.47sec, and just 0.8sec off Pagani’s V12 Zonda F.
The GT350R is far more than just a fettled with GT350 ‘Stang, instead receiving a long list of modifications to give it a hardcore track-focused stance. A 58kg weight saving - largely thanks to losing rear seats and bulky non-essentials like aircon – is accompanied by magnetic ride suspension and extra power from its 5.2-litre V8.
More than 500bhp has reportedly been squeezed from the flat-plane crank unit, with power sent through a Torsen limited-slip diff to substantially improve traction. This should certainly give the 2016 GT350R the grunt and poise to attack the twists and turns of Germany's Green Hell.
No video evidence of the laptime has been released as of yet. We’ll update here as soon as it has.

The word comes from Ford via Road and Track at a media event held today near Ford’s headquarters in Dearborn, Mich. With a normally-aspirated 5.2-litre V8 and an 8,250 rpm redline, the Shelby GT350 Mustang is rated at 526 horsepower and 429 lb.-ft. of torque – living up to Ford’s promises of “more than” 500 HP and 400 lb.-ft. of torque when the GT350 debuted last November.
For comparison’s sake, the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 has a 7.0-litre V8 developing 505 horsepower and 481 lb.-ft. of torque. These figures put the GT350 ahead of the Z/28 by 21 horsepower, but falls short in the torque department by 52 lb.-ft.
Of course, horsepower and torque figures are just the tip of the iceberg. Ford has fitted the GT350 with enhancements like magnetic suspension dampening, significantly larger brakes, stickier tires and, in the case of the GT350R, carbon fibre wheels.
And in case you couldn’t wait for the 2016 model year, Ford is offering up a handful of 2015 GT350 and GT350R models in extremely limited numbers.

That's approx 335km/h.
That kind of speed is not very impressive anymore.
It was quite common back in 1990s and you should be hitting 400km/h if you want to brag something or feel an accomplishment.
Back in 1990s, even Wangan street racers were hitting 300+km/h.
HKS, Apexi, Blitz, JUN, Trust, everyone was going at that speed with Skyline GT-R and Supra.

Come on timpo even you can do better than that. Top speed on a car like this is a matter of gearing choices made in the interest of acceleration, not top speed.
How often do you go 300+km/h versus How often do you rip it off a stoplight or pass someone on a highway?
I know which one I choose.

- magnetic shock option
- optional dual mode exhaust on GT
- DI and pfi for 5.0 (undisclosed power bump)

2018 Ford Mustang Photos and Info ? News ? Car and Driver (http://www.caranddriver.com/news/2018-ford-mustang-photos-and-info-news)
Between model years 1987 and 1993, the Ford Mustang could only be had with either a 2.3-liter four-cylinder or a torquey 5.0-liter V-8; a six-cylinder wasn’t on the menu. Now history is poised to repeat itself with the introduction of the 2018 Ford Mustang, which drops the current car’s naturally aspirated 3.7-liter V-6 and leaves Ford’s updated pony car with only two engine choices: a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder and a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter Coyote V-8.
Of course, today’s Mustang engines are much more powerful than those of 25 years ago. While Ford isn’t ready to talk numbers, the company notes that the 2.3-liter has been updated to incorporate a new overboost function. We expect the revised engine, currently rated at 310 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque, will boast numbers closer to the version found in the Ford Focus RS, which is rated at 350 horsepower and 350 lb-ft.
VIEW 11 PHOTOS
The Mustang GT’s 5.0-liter V-8 also has been revised. Mustang chief engineer Carl Widmann states that the only truly carryover piece from the current 5.0-liter is the crankshaft. Along with a new fuel-delivery system employing both port and direct injection, the updated V-8 also revs higher than before. A quad-pipe exhaust system replaces the current dual-pipe unit, and, as on its fiercest competitor, the Chevrolet Camaro, there’s an optional variable exhaust system that keeps things quiet at lower rpm but amps up the noise courtesy of valves that open when heavier throttle is applied.
Both 2018 Mustang engines are mated to either an upgraded six-speed manual transmission or a new, optional 10-speed automatic. In the case of the V-8, the manual transmission also incorporates the current GT350’s clutch and dual-mass flywheel to improve shift action. Additionally, all 2018 Mustangs are treated to retuned dampers, new anti-roll bars, and revisions to the rear suspension bushings, while cars equipped with the Performance package gain the GT350’s electronically adjustable magnetorheological dampers, another piece of tech already on the Camaro.
The biggest visual change is for cars equipped with the Performance package, which inherit a gaudy new functional rear wing. Although Ford notes that the Subaru WRX STI–like piece has been thoroughly tested in the wind tunnel, the company will allow Performance package buyers to opt out of the big trunk-mounted picnic table. The rest of the Mustang’s exterior updates are more restrained. Ford says the front fascia cribs styling details from the Ford GT supercar, although we’re still searching for the likeness. Redesigned headlights and taillights use LED technology, while the hood, rear fascia, and trunk appliqué have been lightly retouched. The overall look is less retro but still inherently Mustang.
VIEW 11 PHOTOS
Inside, the cabin benefits from padded knee bolsters, soft-touch upper door panels, and an optional heated steering wheel. Although the current Mustang’s gauge cluster survives in lower-spec 2018 models, a new 12-inch digital cluster also makes its debut. It offers three viewing modes: Normal, Sport, and Track. Normal largely mimics the look of the analog cluster, Sport elongates the tachometer to put higher revs at the top, and Track mode eliminates the analog speedometer and tachometer, replacing the speedo with a digital readout and the tach with a longitudinal setup at the top of the cluster. Finally, Ford is incorporating the latest automated safety technology into the Mustang, with a pre-collision system that can also detect pedestrians, plus lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist.
Look for the 2018 Ford Mustang to go on sale this fall. Pricing for the base four-cylinder model is likely to stay close to today’s $27,095 Mustang EcoBoost, while the GT with V-8 should add approximately $500 to $1000 to the base price of today’s $34,095 model.

i certainly wouldnt buy it for the barely noticeable facelift. but the optional magride and DI 5.0 are definite upgrades. as are the 4 extra gears if youre going auto.

With the Camaro SS putting out 455Hp you would think the Mustang would get a bump to 460Hp just for the 'one up'. With the more popular option but less talked about 2.3L I4 getting a 10-speed and a horsepower bump makes it very attractive. I drove one for about 3 months in the summer with the performance package. Car got lots of looks, plenty of power for a DD, and I average 7.6L/100kms driving to Seattle...Oh 2018 will also get a digital dash.

Anyone else get Elantra vibes from the front end? Probably the headlights.
http://o.aolcdn.com/commerce/autodata/images/USC70HYC021A121001.jpg
The first two thoughts that came into my head when I saw the front end of the new Mustang were:
1. looks like an Elantra
2. why did give the Mustang downs
It does look a lot sleeker though, with the lower front end allowing a curvier look, like a Jag for sure.

the old boss 302 had 445, so with DI it shouldnt be a stretch to get to 460hp, problem is the camaro is also quite a bit lighter.

the rock gave away a 2018 to this army vet... you can skip to near the end for footage of the car and you get to see some of the digital display startup sequence. for some reason the car looks a bit better to me in this video? and i have to admit the quad exhausts sound great on startup.

I would say the 55lbs more torque the Camaro has plays more of a factor then the 57lbs less it weighs. Side note it still amazes me how Chevy can make a 6.2L dinosaur pushrod V8 and beat the 5.0L in Hp, Tq, and fuel economy. Opps, don't tell my boss I said that :chop:

2018 Ford Mustang Specs - Mustang GT Horsepower, 0-60 (http://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/future-cars/a10351073/2018-ford-mustang-gt-horsepower-acceleration-specs/)
Shortly after it debuted in January, we guessed that the updated-for-2018 Mustang GT would offer 455 hp. Unfortunately we were wrong. Ford announced today that the 2018 GT actually makes 460 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, and impressively, runs from 0-60 mph in under 4.0 seconds. with Ford's new 10-speed automatic.
The 2019 Mustang EcoBoost also gets Drag Strip mode, and a torque increase from 320 lb-ft to 350 lb-ft, but power output remains unchanged at 310 hp. When equipped with the 10-speed automatic and the Performance package, the EcoBoost will run to 60 mph in under 5.0 seconds.
