: Michelin Pilot Super Sport opinions?

Hey there,

I have some shitty tires to last me until next spring, and since I was curious to see what would be the best tire to put on the 5.0 BMW, I've been reading reviews on Tire Rack.

It would seem that the MPSS are at the top of the pack in terms of reviews, anyone here have personal experience with them, or offer any rave reviews on other tires?

Thanks

It's either the Super Sports or the Continental DW's for me when my current tires wear out. My feelings on how much I want to spend will determine which one I ultimately get.

Here was a good read I thought:

Here is my Coles notes summary:

1) Michelin PSS - best performing tire (short of the autox/track grade stuff), but a little pricey

2) Continental DW (do not confuse with DWS) - almost nearly as grippy as PSS, but the soft sidewalls makes steering feel and turn in noticeably worse than PSS. Ride quality is superb due to soft sidewalls. Prices are very affordable too.

3) BFG g-Force Sport COMP-2 - not quite as high performance as the above 2, but it is another excellent all round choice.

I have them. Best "street" summer tires money can buy. Excellent in both dry and wet and very good treadwear so far.

I have it on my Z, insane grip both wet and dry roads :) Love them, though they do have thick sidewalls so be slightly cautious as something like 255/35 PSS would be a bit bigger than 255/35 Hankook V12s for example. Something to think about if you might be close to rubbing with your current tire set up.
Been using it for about half a year now and I find that tread wears out quite quickly actually. Pricey but I still plan to buy these again for my next set of tires :)

Running them since summer. Awesome tires in both wet and dry roads but they are expensive. I was going to get Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position but I had to wait for them and couldn't. For what I need, I think I would go with Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position next time as they perform very well but cost quite a bit less.

Question for you MPSS owners:

- Are you running the tires on a stock or near stock alignment?
- If Yes - How is the tire wear and how many seasons or KMs have you gotten out of them?

- If no - Are you running the tires on an aggressive track/street alignment with coilovers and camber kit?
- How is the tire wear and how many seasons or KMs have you gotten out of them?

This guy right here^^

I went with the Conti DW's myself, the PSS's in the same size were over $300 more than the DW's and I was more set towards having ride comfort than turn in feel.

While on topic of tires

Anyone have experience with Toyo R888?
The car is used for spring/summer but concerned how they will do in the rain if I get caught in it.

I couldn't afford the Super Sports, so I went with Hankook Ventus V12s

I went from 19" Pirelli RFT's to 21" PS2 and I couldn't believe the massive improvement went it came to ride quality. I'm not going to be driving my car during the winter but the tires do grip better in colder weather than my Pirelli's.

Strange you should say that. I bought the super sports specifically because they were reported as being a bit narrower for a given size vs others. For speed3's depending on brand 235/40/18's would rub (stock height on 8" wide RX8 rims). The super sports have never rubbed on me even with 4 people in the car and luggage in the back. I looked at the conti's but no definitive answer to whether they would rub or not.

The ride quality is way better than the stock potenza re050's, which only lasted me 35k.

Pilot sport PS2's are a VERY different tire than Pilot Super Sports.

Not meaning to thread jack but how do the Potenza Pole Position S-04 compare to MPSS?

I know the MPSS grip very well, experienced it at my old job lol

I considered them but went with the Bridgestone RE11A's instead b/c they were cheaper & came in a wider size. I also considered the Dunlop Z2's.

Have them on my FR-S. Used for the summer. Love them. Too bad the FR-S doesn't even have enough power to fully utilize these tires. :fullofwin:

I changed my tires from DWS (275/30/19) to PSS (255/30/19) and the width stayed the same... Be careful of what size you order, much wider than you'd think.

888's are a really good rain tire. Compound doesn't take a lot of heat before they start gripping and their tread design is good in the wet.

Great tires...... Only gripe is the pricing, but you have to pay to play.

They're quite quiet on aggressive turns. Handle amazing but like all Summer tires, they have a short life span in comparison to All Seasons.

I have the PSS on my RL and been using them since March. I'm very happy with how they perform. Even in the pouring rain they were excellent.

The Conti DWs I have on my Civic SiR and they are great tires as well. But like mentioned, they are noticeably softer than the PSS.

I have the PSS on my RL in a staggered set-up and have been using them since March. Off the top of my head I would say I have put on between 16,000kms and 18,000kms on them. I know that's a bit of a range but I can't crunch an exact number at the moment.

On the front I have about -1 degree of camber and my rears have -3 degrees of camber. Both front and rear toes are set to 0 degree. The fronts I would say are worn evenly. But the rears have noticeable inside camber wear. I haven't gotten a chance to measure the exact 32nds of tread but I'm pretty sure I've scrubbed off 2-3 32nds already.

On the Michelin website, it says that with a staggered set-up they are rated for only 25,000kms hahaha. From how it looks, I can probably use them from spring to fall of next year (I use winter tires the rest of the year) and I will need a new set in 2015.

That being said, I do a lot of driving though. My daily commute is a minimum of 70kms and I have taken this car to and from Seattle/Portland numerous times. Plus the driving I do on weekends.

Hope that helps, hehe.

there's no reason to buy them as your dedicated street tire unless you can get them very very cheap IMHO.
