VANCOUVER -- Four on-duty, uniformed Vancouver police officers eating supper were hurt when a BMW suddenly plowed into a restaurant in Vancouver's West End on Sunday night.

The front window of the Fatburger restaurant was smashed in about 8 p.m., leaving the silver BMW sedan sitting partly in the restaurant.

No other restaurant patrons or staff were injured.

"It's something you don't expect, working your shift. You think the dangerous parts are over when you are sitting in a restaurant having dinner.

Unfortunately these things happen," said Const. Brian Montague. "We're hoping for a speedy recovery for our officers."

There is nothing to indicate the act was deliberate, said Montague.

Injuries to the officers ranged from broken bones to complaints of difficulty breathing and chest pain, said Montague.

The injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, he said.

Witness reports indicate the southbound BMW, driven by a 30-year-old woman, veered suddenly into the restaurant, said Montague.

While the cause of the crash is unknown, it does not appear that alcohol was a factor, he said. It's too early to say if speed contributed to the incident, he said.

Officers seized the woman's cellphone, and will be investigating whether she was making a call at the time, he said.

The woman did not appear to be injured, but was taken to hospital as well, he said.

Private nurse Rohangiz Azizi was walking down Denman when the crash occurred.

She said the building shook violently, and she immediately went into the restaurant to see if she could assist with first aid. She said she attended an officer who appeared to be in shock, but did not have any visible injuries.

At least a dozen police vehicles converged on the restaurant and officers kept bystanders well back from the scene by cordoning off a one-block area.

There were reports of at least eight ambulances being dispatched.

Montague said the large police response was understandable given that officers were hurt, and they didn't know what type of incident they were dealing with.

Please forgive the incredulous surprise on my part. See, everything about this story — shitty driving, BMW, Fatburger — screams "America" to me. Specifically, "Florida." Right?

But no. This one wasn't on us. It was all on our supposedly more mellow neighbor to the north. How about that?

Anyway, Canada's National Post reports that the BMW 3-Series convertible crashed into the diner on Sunday evening, hitting the four officers and inflicting non-life threatening injuries. The driver, a 30-year-old woman, was not injured. Police said they will look into whether the driver might have been distracted by a cellphone or had a medical condition.

Glad to see you're getting in on ridiculous fast food-related car mayhem too, Canada. Stay classy up there.

I was just walking along Fraser St, leaving the Dollar store and then I heard a screaming and a loud BANG.
I looked up and saw this car plow into the side of ScotiaBank, and saw this elderly man on the floor (apparently his wife got hit and was on the other side of the car).

Pretty messed up. Not even sure what caused the driver to end up turning into the building like this.

The eldery couple got taken away on a stretcher, not sure about their condition afterward. I hope they're okay.

A couple years back I was inside Wholefoods off of Cambie St paying when I heard a loud crash. Walked outside and saw a female drivers car up against Wholefoods. Luckily it didn't go through the window and luckily nobody other than the driver was hurt. Spoke to a couple witnesses outside and apparently it came down the street at a highspeed, somehow hopped the curb and literally flew over a car and hit Wholefoods.
