Hwy 1 closed westbound in Chilliwack due to 17-car pile-up | News1130 (http://www.news1130.com/2013/11/15/massive-pileup-closes-highway-1-in-chilliwack/)
CHILLIWACK (NEWS1130) – Highway 1 is closed westbound at the Vedder Canal Bridge after a serious crash.
RCMP say the smoke caused a distraction, resulting in a rapid slowdown of traffic and an “accordion effect,” as vehicles slammed into one another.
We’re now told 17 vehicles were involved, and 14 people have been taken to various hospitals with non life-threatening injuries.
Greyhound Bus Highway 1 Crash“We don’t have any reports of fatalities,” says Inspector Tim Shields.
“We are warning commuters to avoid the area of Highway 1 in Chilliwack and take an alternative route,” adds Shields.
Crews are watching for any spilled fuel that may be leaking into the waterway.
Greyhound says the bus that was involved in the crash was on its way to Vancouver from Kamloops.
“There were 36 passengers on-board, plus one driver. I can confirm that there were five minor injuries,” says Alex Pedrini with Greyhound.
The company says it is cooperating with police, as well as doing its own independent investigation.
Eastbound traffic has re-opened after an hour-long closure at No. 1 Road.
Westbound traffic is expected to remain blocked until this afternoon.
