I'm moving my business off of Hostgator because their uptime is shit.

2 years into a 3 year prepaid deal and in about one third of the one month measurement periods, they don't meet their 99.9% uptime target; usually 99.4-99.5%.

This doesn't seem like much but that can add up to 3 hours where online sales can't be made, emails aren't delivered, our technical library isn't available... and it's not like I have control over it.

We just get error 500s because of other users on the same shared server not playing nice.

I'm moving to A Small Orange VPS.

I've had a site on HostGator, and the experience has been opposite. 100% uptime for 3 years. If your site goes down it's probably due to a misconfiguration issue on your part. If it's a 500 error, this is definitely the case.

True 100% uptime? Do you monitor with pingdom or is it anecdotal?

The only improvements I could make are to concat my css files from 8 down into one. But that's because I'm just a little lazy. It's affecting site load times just a tiny but according to webpagetest.org. If my visitors are taking down my site with just a handful too many calls, dafuq is wrong with Hostgator.


EDIT: anecdotally on my end, problems did start at about the time HG moved me from gator145 to gator4064. This actually could show that something I have is poorly optimized and gator145 was a good quick server with great neighbours and now that I'm on gator4064, the same site's problems which were masked by the performance of the previous server are now apparent in a less ideal environment. Just a thought.

We could host with their dedicated servers, but it would be about the same as what we pay now
