Wow, since when did they have imports as prizes on the Price is Right?!

I still remember like 5-6 years ago when a lady won a Pontiac GTO on the show that turned out to have mechanical issues and had a fucked up frame from a big wreck.

For a long while now. They had a 458 not too long ago, but the contestant lost. She's going to pay out the nose in taxes on that.

The woman looked high after winning the R8 Spyder.
A car that costs over $157000 and 10 grand in gas money are sweet prizes.

Good for her.

She can always sell it. Even at half price she is still getting a good amount of money. If it was in I would definity sell it.

Cheese and crackers!

What a waste. I am sad. She will promptly sell that car. Doubt pulling into a trailer park in that will look to good to the neighbors.

She is most definetly going to have to sell the car, the taxes on her win add up to over $50000. That means that unless she makes a lot of money, its probably not reasonable to keep the car. It's a shame really that the US tax system is like this and people win prizes that often times they cannot afford to keep.

Our system here in Canada is much better.

TPIR should consider putting another import car for one of their games just to help boost their ratings

Hmmm, a 458 Spyder and an Audi R8 Spyder.

What about a Porsche 918 Spyder? haha.

Imagine the withholding tax for the winner of that Porsche.

she's from Tacoma

pretty cool indeed and if you can afford the taxes great :)

i've read that some winners don't take their prizes from the show because they can't deal with the taxes and cash equivalents aren't available on many prizes

unless you have a pretty good job or saved a lot, $50k is a lot of money. I hope she's able to keep it

If she can't afford to pay the taxes, she can still keep the $10k, right?

Weird video source, but it's the only one that clearly shows the loss on a 458. Or CBS goes for broke and offers the MP4-12C Spyder.

She could easily get a short term loan.

As far as I know, all prizes basically get added to your income.

So if you make 50K, after taking those prizes, it'll look like your income for the year is 217K (50+157+10). Then she would get taxed accordingly at, lets say 40%, which is 80+K in taxes (majority of the coming from the car). So unless she has the extra $ lying around to pay that off, she would have to sell the car. She would still be net positive, but it's not exactly like just winning a $157K

Our system here in Canada is much better.

Everyone pays less tax individually, in the states. People who win money (free money) should be taxed - I'd rather my income be taxed at a lower rate and winnings taxed than be taxed higher on my income.

Everyone (should) has income, only a small few have 'winnings' - I prefer a system where the majority are better off (lower taxes) than a few that benefit (gamblers, lottery winners)

No, our system is not better

I came across this article that does a good job of breaking down the taxes she'll owe.

Tacoma woman wins biggest 'Price is Right' prize but faces huge tax bill - Local - MyNorthwest.com (http://mynorthwest.com/11/2423809/Tacoma-woman-wins-biggest-Price-is-Right-prize-but-faces-huge-tax-bill)

The killer part is in the state of california, taxes have to be paid the moment you win before you can accept your prize. This article breaks down one contestant's experiences on The Price is Right after winning a new car:

so, the game show trick is to find the poorest contestants and find the most expensive car possible for a grand prize knowing there is no way they can pay for the taxes and the show cashes in on the publicity and ratings bonanza... egh.

well.. By the link posted by Eff-1 it seems as though she CAN afford the taxes and wishes to keep the prize money, which is freaking sweet!

Yes, most likely they would, but unless this lady is willing to put herself over 50k in debt to keep the car, then she has to sell it off to pay the taxes.

Even if she manages to sell the car off for damn near MSRP, her win really only adds up to around 100k. Not saying that isn't good money, but kinda lame how she probably won't enjoy the car she won....
