Anyone have a Surface tablet?
Been playing with my friend's and it looks nice.
I like that it can be both a tablet and an ultrabook (Pro version essentially).
I'm looking at the non-pro version, the Surface 2, so it runs the ghetto RT without support for full Windows.. but I only plan to use it to surf the web and for school as I have a desktop at home.

I've played with the original Surface for a bit, and I like it. It's a good tablet if you want to do actual work on it. In desktop mode, it's just like regular Windows. You can have all your windows open and arranged as you would on a desktop. It's got a USB port, so you can plug in flash keys, hubs, keyboard, mice, etc... After using the Surface, it makes the iPad feel like a toy. If I had to get one today, for the money, I'd get the Surface.

^^ my frd bot the surface and she likes it so far but complains is laggy and also when whe type on her keyboard there is like a sec of 2 before the words appear on the screen. But I think is a bit over price for it.

I've had the original surface, it was quite laggy. Two main complaints I had were 1) could not play HD on vimeo or youtube, if you try it goes down to 0.5fps. The flat keyboard tho it's nice to have a keyboard it's hard to get used to. One thing I do like is the screen, that screen is beautiful.

Surface lag seems to be resolved by fully updating the tablet

Been debating on getting a Surface 2 as well. It seems like the best tablet option for using Office on the go. The type cover 2 goes very well with it.

Right now, students get 10% and there's a text coupon going around to save additional 10%..
A new S2 should run $400 after taxes. Really tempted.

I'd only get a pro. My boss uses a surface pro 2 and with all the options it can get pretty pricey.

the start screen works well in tablet mode (ive got a vaio duo11) but even then im mainly on the desktop so it really doesn't make a difference
i like the search function
you just have to get used to it i guess

Heads up that Microsoft's support for the surface is horrible. One of my friends purchased from Microsoft Online and received a DOA. Shipped it in and 3 weeks later still no response from Microsoft. Give Microsoft a call 5 days ago, they say they will call her back the next day. Waited next day, no call. Called back a day after requesting an escalated service, rep mentioned this wasn't possible, rep then said they will guarantee her a call back the next day and there was nothing they could do. At this point my friend was fed up, Microsoft kept making promises for call backs daily and not once out of the 4 reps she dealt with, called back.. She requested a refund.
Didn't think an Enterprise business would be handled service like this, but then again its Microsoft.

I wish that when my Type Cover is attached, Windows would automatically disable Metro and just revert it to a traditional start menu shell, and vice versa when I took it off.
Kinda pointless to have Metro when it's in laptop mode IMO.
I updated to 8.1 just now, the new Start button is cool. Can't really tell the other differences.

By the way, anyone successful with enabling a second language keyboard? I can enable the pop-up Korean keyboard, but I can't type Korean with my Type Cover. It's weird because I can toggle between both a US and Korean keyboard.
EDIT: Nevermind, this helped me out - http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/5904-language-bar-turn-off-windows-8-a.html

what that much money wouldn't it better to get a cheap ultra book instead?or add a few hundred to get the mac book air 13inch?
For me anyways that's what I would do.

I couldn't justify the extra $$$ to get the Pro 2 (although the speed would've been nice), so I opted for an Asus Transformer T100. $399 with the keyboard. No regrets!

If I were to get a Windows tablet, I'd probably get the Asus T100 instead. Yea the build quality and screen aren't as nice, but it does everything you need just as well as the surface for half the price.

Same experience I had with best buy. Order a pair of speakers and they ship me a camcorder. Call them like 5 times and every single time they have no recordes and keep saying they will send me the sticker to send back the camcorder and they will do a refund towards the speaker. Never got any E-mail from them so I just give up.

i just picked up the surface pro 2 64gb i don't need the extra space on it.. although i'm super disappointed that they gave me an old lot with the 4200u cpu instead of the 4300u cpu.. difference is prolly not even noticeable.. but why would i want to pay full price for a "lower" model especially when the new one is already out

64gb model only comes with about 28gb usable. so if you add in a sd card gives you about 85gb.. more than enough for what i need to use it for.. it's not like it's meant to be a full fledge work/gaming computer

i thought about it.. but the extra 600bux i have to pay for 4gb of ram and bigger ssd doesn't justify

Been using my Surface for a good two weeks now.
Now that I've gotten used to the battery life, it's actually not bad. I get about 4 hours at school with medium brightness typing notes, browsing the internet, using OneNote, etc.
My friend has a Surface RT, and damn, it's much lighter.

Aspect ratio makes it a bit strange for me. Have 2x SP2 and 1x SP3 all 8gb core i5. The type cover and touchpad on the new one is so much better as well its a bit lighter. The screen is higher resolution but roughly similar in ppi. Stylus I never really used on either so can't comment on that.

You need to ask yourself will you be using it on the go all the time or just mostly at home. What will you use it for mainly (web surfing or mostly working on docs and typing).
For most ppl a tablet is better if they are just using it for light surfing and little to none word process. Surface pro is only good for those ppl who are always on the go and need sot use office or light graphics design and editing and doesn't want something as heavy as a laptop.
Honestly though for the price of Surface pro 3 I rather add a little more and get the macbook air.

yes the macbook air is on my mind as well... but i do not have much apple experience other than the odd ipad websurf.

Not exactly the surface, but these full Windows 8 non-RT tablets are mighty tempting. Might go for one of those over an Android if/when I get one.
Very tempted to pick up a i7 with the dock. Did some research and there seems to be some "problems"
- Overheats and "freezes"
- Magnetic part of charger is flimsy as hell and breaks in a few months.
Plan to use it as a glorified ipad that can run foobar + VLC/KMP for 1080p K-Dramas marathons on long flights + maybe some light gaming (warcraft/hearthstone).
Any of you guys encounter any of the above mentioned problems? Really want to get it but am a little apprehensive.
*Already have a mbp/air so nope, its not to be a laptop replacement.

i love my power cover + sp 2.. 17 hrs battery life.. can't complain about that for long ass flights
^
Not too worried about batt life so long as it is >5 hr per charge as most 777 & A330 have power sockets in every seat. Only real worry is the overheating/power cable issue.

Why do you need an i7? None of the tasks you mentioned need that. I've deployed around 20 SP3 i5 8GB 250GB with no issues whatsoever in my office and remote users. No reports of any broken chargers or overheating in the last few months.

Its the only one that comes with the 500gb hdd. Right now, I travel with a iMini 128 + mbp 500, I want to replace BOTH with the SP3 so 500 + a 128 sd card would be perfect. (I did consider the i5 + upgrade to a 1tb 840 EVO but after seeing ifixit shatter their screen during the teardown I decided against it.)

from what i've seen is that the prices are the same for all microsoft products at all stores, so it dosen't appear to matter where you go.
having said that, i just tried the black friday store coupon (only $40 but hey everything counts) from staples and it worked on top of the discount ($140) microsoft has on the surface pro 3 i am looking at

wow. went to the central city future shop and it was a zoo at lunchtime. i just wanted to look at a demo one more time before ordering online from staples but i bumped into a salesperson (hanna) who said he would honor the $40 discount from staples, so i went for it and he did the transcation from a private till so no lineup. 10 minutes tops.
... and i still have staples coupon. i guess i can use it to get a keyboard from staples
