Russell Johnson, best known for playing the Professor on "Gilligan's Island," has died at the age of 89, ABC News and TMZ.com reported.

"Gilligan's Island" aired for three seasons and 98 episodes on CBS from September 1964 to September 1967.

The show followed seven castaways as they attempt to escaped from the island where they've been shipwrecked.

"The Professor" was in fact a high school science teacher, not a university professor.

Yeah that's how syndication worked.. Studios usually wanted to produce 100 episodes to be able to do it. If you see a show that did 30 episodes a season or whatever, that usually meant they were planning on syndicating it after the first run on network tv.
