if you search youtube, you will find fan footage of them shooting in dubai (mostly driving scenes). tyrese was the guest of a sheik while he was filming and he posted a lot of stuff on his twitter account back then... it's worth a look.

Sean (lucas black). they had to bring him back because he was the last one see Han alive before he was killed. i am going to assume they are going to tie the final scene from tokyo drift into this movie somehow, which is the reason we now know why Dom was in japan in that movie. but i guess things changed with the loss of paul walker and they needed to fill in the void left behind.

i was just watching the teaser again: is that Brian or Sean wearing a FBI bulletproof vest?

Well according to IMDB in this picture (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1780677376/tt2820852?ref_=tt_pv_md_2), she is Nathalie Emmanuel (character name: Ramsey).

The person who played Vince's wife Rosa in Fast Five is Jeirmarie Osorio.

Wont mince words as that was a fucking terrible movie (I'm sure that's gonna be an unpopular opinion). I've a feeling that their continuity supervisor either fell asleep ten minutes into the whole filming schedule and never woke up, or they didn't even bother hiring one. Simply on a technical level, the film had far too many mistakes. Even on a practical level, a lot of it didn't make sense.

That said, it's an FnF film, so I wasn't expecting a realistic movie. Definitely a leave-your-mind-at-the-door and simply enjoy the moving pictures in front of you. A few of the technical errors did end up pulling me out of my enjoyment but overall it was a decent addition to the franchise. My only real issue with that aspect is that it's definitely veered far off course from it's origins, though I did enjoy a bunch of the nods to the original film (Race Wars, driving under an 18-wheeler, etc).

And I did genuinely appreciate the final few minutes of the film. Nice monologue by Vin Diesel (in Dom-guise) to Paul.

Dem feelz.

No better way to pay tribute to Paul Walker than that last scene.

Tone Loc
04-04-2015, 01:26 AM
Not going to lie, I teared up a bit.

Logically, I know Paul Walker was just an actor in a movie.

But a huge part of me credits the FnF movies (mostly the first 3) with my love affair for cars. I remember being 9 years old and begging my dad to buy the VHS - yes, it was THAT long ago - copy of the first movie. We had to have watched it about 20 times the first week we owned it. To this day I can pretty much recite every single line in the film word-for-word. Growing up, guys like Walker were a huge role model for me. Not only on screen, but because he was a charitable individual who didn't do stupid-ass shit like the celebrities of today (Kim K, Kanye, Lindsay Lohan, Charlie Sheen, etc.) but instead stayed low-key and true to himself. I saw that clip of him where he went to Japan to visit Mine's and test drive an R34 and thinking... damn, this guy actually is Brian O'Connor in real life!

RIP Paul. IMO Universal did a good job with paying tribute to him, I was really worried they'd be insensitive and kill him off but the way they did it was awesome. Especially at the end when the two cars split ways (that song too, DAMN!) was extremely touching to watch. You can see the pain in Vin Diesel's eyes, and you know he isn't just acting at that point. Paul really was his best friend and it shows in their chemistry. Personally, I was crushed when I received the news that Paul died, and doubly crushed when the news came out that he passed away during a charity event... it's times you wonder why a celebrity who actually does something constructive with their fame dies, but many of them live senseless lives of hedonism and worthlessness for 80+ years...

That being said, the movie requires a LOT of "suspension of disbelief". But then again, movies are entertainment, and I personally enjoy movies that don't take themselves super seriously. I pay $15 to be entertained, not to pull out my imaginary fact checker and tick boxes in my head.

Realistically, I'll probably watch Fast 8 if (and when) it ever comes out. But those movies will never be the same without Paul Walker.

P.S: the only way they could have made this movie "better" as a tribute was to have Ja Rule at some point screaming "NOOOOO, MONICAAAA"

j.f0ng
04-04-2015, 02:18 AM
^ Couldn't have put it better myself.

Watched the movie earlier tonight and goddamn, it definitely did not disappoint in the "no fucking way wtf how is that even happening" aspect. Hobb's one liners definitely deserve a honourable mention. :awwyeah:

But those last few minutes hit way too hard. Tears were on the verge of falling out. The combination of the song, the tribute to the OG cars, Dom's words, and the cars splitting up was simply a perfect ending, while heartbreaking at the same time. You can tell it wasn't just a tribute to O'Connor and the family aspect, but a tribute to Paul Walker as a person. I was pretty speechless at the end of the movie and just sat there for a few minutes processing everything and gathering myself. The flashback scenes reminded me of back in early highschool when FnF marathons would air on MuchMusic on friday nights and I'd sit through all of them..oh man the memories. Never thought a FnF movie could make me feel this way. I thought the tribute at the beginning of Fast 6 was good, but this one just slammed everyone in the theatre with the feelz. :QQ:

On a side note, while I was headed to the theatre, I drove behind a STI with the RIP Paul Walker decal on their rear window. Thought that was a cool little coincidence.

Lomac being a production guy, and me being a nerd for this sort of stuff, there was one technique in the fight sequences I don't think I have ever seen before. Curious to see if it stuck out to you as much as it did myself.

It happens atleast 3 times in the movie, I believe the first time being when Hobbs first fights statham, the next being when Brian fights the guy inside the bus when it flips on it's side, and the final time when Letty is fighting Rousey in Abu dhabi.

They "roll" the camera, it's a unique effect. If you watch as the fighters get flipped upside down, or as the bus rolls over the camera also does a roll. It sort of freezes the fighters in the frame, but you can tell what's going on. It's pretty cool.

I'd be interested to see how they achieved that. I looked through some of the behind the scenes stuff and didn't notice this mentioned.

I forget what the name of that technique is called, but it's a relatively simple process. Typically it's merely a matter of bolting the camera to a wall or piece of furniture that's going to be moving along with the actors. If a couch flips onto it's back, just tack the camera to the top and let it fall with the scene.

Another means of achieving this shot is to use a remote swivel head that can rotate upside down or to use an actual repurposed industrial robotic arm. The former is definitely cheaper but the latter can be programmed to do the exact same shot as many times as you need, at whatever speed you want.

http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/gravitymovie/images/7/7b/BotandDolly_Robotic_Arm-1.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20140325175820

Alternatively they could have been using an extensively modified version of a body harness.

http://www.chapmanleonard.com/rigs-and-support/bodyrigs/1%20%282%29.jpg

Either way, it's definitely an effective shot.

One thing I want to touch on that I doubt most people will think about is the change of directors from Justin Lin to James Wan. A lot of people were critical of having a director that's done virtually nothing but horror movies suddenly in charge of an action thriller. Merely looking at the way Fast 6 and Furious 7 are visualized, I think it was a good decision to go with Wan. The thing about directing horror movies is that, at least in his case, it tends to be a very visual genre. Therefore a lot of shots have to be thought out well in advance and need to add something to the scene. Lin's visuals were good, yes, but still very generic shots. Wan, on the other hand, seemed to give his Director of Photography more freedom on the creativity aspect (as touched on in Meme405's comments). No, not all of the shots succeeded and some were definitely overused (far too many 360* dolly shots, imo), but overall it added that little extra visual eye candy that was missing from the other movies.

If you still don't quite know what I'm talking about, watch Ron Howard's Rush. The camera work and angles in that movie is probably the best I have ever seen in any movie, especially when it comes to the creativity of many of the angles.

I thought the movie sucked compared to the previous ones. It started off really well with race wars but then it focused too much on fights, guns and explosions instead of cars, became another typical action genre movie. I thought the military helicopter and the predator drone in the middle of LA was really ridiculous and not in the cool way.

PS the MMA girl can't act lol

Tokyo drift was the last real "car based" fast and furious, the fast franchise now is more of a action movie designed to appeal to the masses with a little bit of car stuff to keep the original fans interested

Furious 7 had its moments. The ninjas were definitely working overtime tonight with the chopping of onions. -felt the emotion from seeing the last few scenes at the end of the movie.

There were many exotic cars in this movie. A red R8, yellow 458 Italia, white Veyron, a black Aventador that Jason Statham drives to an oil refinery, etc.

A surprise was the casting of one of the characters. She's so hot! :jizz:

Ramsey, the hacker, is one hot actress! Nathalie Emmanuel also plays Missandei in Game of Thrones. The scene where she steps out the swimming pool in Dubai while wearing a bikini is hot. You could hear the HNNNNGGG from the guys in the theatre.

The big theme of this movie:

A big theme of Furious 7 is "family." Letty finally remembers all her romantic experiences with Dom. She remembers them getting married in the Dominican Republic in one of the last scenes where Dom drives his Dodge Charger off a building while fighting Deckard Shaw, the brother of Owen Shaw from Furious 6. Dom is in Letty's arms while she tells Dom that she remembers everything about their lives together. Of course, Dom regains consciousness.

OH DAMN...THE FEELS in the last scene!

I thought the movie was pretty fucking good, granted there was some "outrageous" stunts but overall it was a great movie but bittersweet since this will be the last movie and last FnF with Paul Walker.

I definitely felt all the feels during the tribute to Paul Walker in the last scene. All those memories, starting with FnF and all the way til F7. It was just an amazing journey and an equally amazing ride with Paul Walker.

Rock Bottom on Statham was awesome. I was the only one that went "ROCK BOTTOM!!!" :lol

I almost teared up at the end. Hearing Vin Diesel with his eulogy at the end definitely hit me hard. I think it also has to do with the fact that all of us basically grew up with this movie and the cast, so it's like seeing an extension of us leave and never come back.

Made almost $150million in North America

The highest April weekend

At the domestic box office, Furious 7's $147.2 million debut is 55 percent higher than Captain America: The Winter Soldier's $95 million, which was the previous April record holder.

This is also the biggest debut in the franchise thus far, up a whopping 51 percent over Fast & Furious 6. Furious 7 earned $13.3 million on IMAX screens alone, which ranks second all-time for a 2D-only movie behind The Dark Knight Rises.

and almost $400million total worldwide

The movie also opened to an incredible $245 million overseas; that's without any help from China, Japan and Russia, where it will open in the next few weeks. So far, Furious 7 has earned $392 million worldwide, and is very likely on track to earn over $1 billion by the end of its run.

Got it from wikipedia. :)

The "air drop" scene was conceived by stunt coordinator, Spiro Razatos, who supervised on Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6. Razatos told Business Insider that he wanted to rely more on real stunts rather than CGI because he wanted the whole sequence to "feel real" and satisfy audience's expectations. The stunt took months of prep-solving problems. Cameras needed to be mounted onto cars in a way that they would not be destroyed when the cars landed, and the crew had to figure out a safe way to get the cars out of the plane. They performed a dry run with a single car falling out of a plane and did this six times. Cars were dropped from a Lockheed C-130 Hercules high above the Arizona desert, but close up shots that show the cars landing on a mountain road were filmed in Colorado. There were two airplanes, flying at a height of 12,000 feet, each dropping two cars apiece. BRS parachutes enabled with GPS were secured to each of the cars before dropping off the C-130 plane. At about 5,000 feet, the parachutes deployed. Over 10 cameras were used for the sequence. In addition to cameras on the ground, there were cameras remotely operated inside the plane and another three mounted outside each car. Additional cameras were on a helicopter, where Razatos was stationed watching monitors. Three skydivers used in the shoot wore helmet cameras to help shoot the sequence from multiple angles. Sky divers would either jump out before cars or after them. While all the cars landed on their drop zones, 70% landed perfectly and 30% didn't. The last part of the scene, which shows the cars hitting the road, was shot separately. To get that right, the team set up a pully sytem that had cars six to eight feet above the ground. When it was time, the drivers raced their engines and slid to the ground at full speed. Razatos admits that the air drop sequence was "all real" and that it would be "hard to top.

the air drop was real, but the movie footage of the landing on the road was done on a giant zipline.

there are youtube videos posted on this thread showing them pushing out the cars one at time out of a hercules c-130 since the USAF would never allow them to use one of their globemasters for this. (on a side note: i don't know if this is for real or not, but people said to look carefully at the markings on the globemaster, and then compare it to the one that was used in the last superman movie... same plane?)

and if you follow mightycarmods they did an episode on it as well. they showed footage of the remains of the green challenger letty drove after it landed intact, but the wind caught the chute dragged it across the desert like a tumbleweed and destroyed it:o

Better acting and effects than I expected, but that storyline was disappointing (to be polite). I didn't expect much given that they pick the actors before the script but still, I expected Statham to actually be somewhat relevant.

As a side note, wtf ever happened to Leon from the first movie? All this "family" stuff feels so weird when most of the original secondary characters are gone and the rest are fairly new.

You can tell when everyone was sitting at the beach they are no longer acting. Too much feels.

The movie itself wasn't "great" but it's what you would expect from a FnF movie. The action and suspense had me on the edge of my seat.

It gets me every time that all the characters in the movie are essentially Terminators reborn;
Crowbar to the face? No problem, it's just a black smudge across the cheek.
Explosion forces your head through the van window? Oh I messed up my hair.
Car splits in half? Oh I got a papercut on my forearm.

The Rock splitting his cask by flexing had me laughing pretty hard. Damn he's jacked.

-the plot and storyline wasn't as good as the 5th or 6th

-the ending with the song and flashbacks was so much feelllsss

Can't help you with either of those, but I can tell you where the roads that the bus scenes were filmed on. Some of it was filmed on Pikes Peak, and some of it was filmed on the Monarch Pass in Colorado. I've driven all of it, either in April last year or March this year while exploring roads for Classic Car Adventure's events. Was pretty distracting when, during the bus scene all I could think of was "I know that road! I know that road!!" Looked it up after I got out, and realized I was correct.

-Dave

*Edit* Adding to this post, as I've found some more roads / locations / info for you:

"Race Wars" was filmed about 70miles north of LA in Lancaster. The filming location for Race Wars was highway 138. http://goo.gl/maps/bE92k It has some curves, so it's *possible* they simply used those as the road in, but pretty unlikely. The second unit team (mostly stunt coordinators, and not the lead actors) did a lot of the travelling and location shoots while the actors were primarily based in Atlanta.

Interestingly enough, the ending of the bus scene with the running and spoiler catch was actually a real stunt, and not CGI. Filmed in a rock quarry in Atlanta.
