: The Official 2013/2014 Whitecaps & MLS Thread

Seems like we got a decent number of people that follow the Whitecaps/MLS so thought I'd give this a shot....

Season right around the corner, anyone going to the game?

Any word on whether Henry is gonna play? He's my favourite player of all time - would be nice to see him Live for once...

Predictions for this season? I think we'll be alright, despite the loss of Camilo....I think Manneh and Teibert should be ready to step up big time.

Anyway, go Caps!

Seriously? I went to one of the Sounders games last year too and I remember it being pretty damn exciting....Our goalie made some HUGE saves to keep us in the game and I think the game ended as a 2-0 W?

Anyway, I think if anyone wanted to go to just check out a single game this year, they should check out the one against Toronto - they made a couple HUGE pick-ups.

If you went to this game, I don't know how you can possibly find it boring, unless you're just simply not a fan of the game....far more exciting than watching the Canucks play right now, for a much better buy, and with a much better crowd....

Another thing about the Caps is that they had a great home record last year, 9-3-5, making almost all their home games pretty interesting to watch.

I went to the Montrael game last year for the Voyageurs Cup and I had an amazing time. Even though we came out on a draw and lost the cup, sitting with the Southsiders were incredible. I stood the entire game with the crowd and it was LOUD.

The first time I watched a Whitecaps game was when they won the NASL championship back in 1979. That's when ABC TV announcer referred to Vancouver as the "Village of Vancouver."

Then we had Expo 86 and Vancouver was no longer a "village", LOLOLOLOLOL.

Wear our white, and see us through,
Sing loud and clear till the day is done,
Sing "Whitecaps" everyone.

Here's hoping Morales makes this team better because we've been missing a midfielder for a few years now.

The Whitecaps have been missing that "flair" in the midfield ever since Chumiento left. Good on Robinson for bringing in these South American players, especially Morales. If the midfield plays up to par, we won't miss Camilo at all. Miller/Mattocks/Manneh can fill that void, they just need the service (and maybe a little more polish).

I hate how not only does the BC Place turf prevent us from getting any men's national games, but it stops us from seeing players like Henry :(

AFAIK, that's why. Can't remember where I read it but he has not played an MLS game on a turf field, because of the possibility of injury. Turf *is* different than natural grass, but he's being a big French girl as far as I'm concerned.

Another thing about the Caps is that they had a great home record last year, 9-3-5, making almost all their home games pretty interesting to watch.

Part of the reason why we had such a good home record is the turf we have. It's a shitty surface (it's gotten worse over time because of all the events held in BC Place) and the majority of teams in the league actually play on natural grass so they have a hard time adapting to the surface.

Our turf isn't just your average turf.....It's new turf we got with the 2012 renovations....Moreover, it's FIFA certified turf....We're hosting the women's world cup in 2015......If it's good enough for the world cup, these guys can play on it.....It's also got 32 mm thick shock pad underneath the turf so honestly, people that don't play on it are just being pieces of shit.....Doesn't help with the pussy rep that soccer players already have by the general public....

BTW, Henry played in the season opener last year against Portland on turf.

RacingMetro92
03-07-2014, 10:14 PM
I've been on that turf, and at times it's almost like running on hard carpet as areas of it dry out. When it's wet, it's almost like grass but compared to grass, there's a pretty big difference. It's definitely better than FieldTurf (which is what I practice rugby on) but the argument for old people can still be made. Plus Tapioca is right, the quality of the turf has gone to shit because they just put a hard plastic puzzle thing as a surface to walk on for events.

Still doesnt vindicate Henry from pussying out though.

bballguy
03-07-2014, 10:50 PM
Yeah, regardless, I don't think there's any excuse for it.....It's like hockey players saying they won't play in LA vs the Kings after a Lakers/Clippers game.....

Sunday's game against Chivas should be interesting. Coaches around the league are probably watching film from the NY game and trying to figure out the midfield. Chivas doesn't play much D, but they have a good midfield with Rosales and Torres. Morales may start, so I'm looking forward to seeing him play the majority of the game.

The club should build up Mattocks just enough so that they can trade or sell him to another team. Mattocks has pace, but his football sense is limited and he can't seem to finish with the regularity that a striker needs.

Manneh has far more potential than Mattocks. Pace, football sense, and a willingness to learn. He's confident, but not in an arrogant way like Mattocks.

Manneh needs more pro playing time and I don't think his game right now suits him as a lone striker.

Also Robinson is sticking with his 4231 and not switching it up every game like Rennie did last year (that was a mistake) plus laba allows reo Coker to push up and get involved, which worked on the morales goal.

It'll be interesting to see later on when the caps go on a goalless drought and how they adjust.

So happy to know Robinson has a solid game plan formation wise... Seems like Rennie had no idea what he was doing or just fell back to his "LOL RAILHAWKS" plan.

I think Laba and Reo C. in that defensive midfield role is going to be awesome, but it makes me worried that Koffie could get pushed out :(

RacingMetro92
03-12-2014, 08:30 AM
Laba> Koffie IMO. Reo C.'s replacement when he leaves for more money next season. On the bright side, we have a really good sub who can drop right in and do work.

Rennie and his varying formations each week was infuriating to watch because players wouldn't be able to get comfortable in a system. Add the lack of a midfield spark and it's a recipe for failure. The only reason we even had a sniff of the playoffs last year was because of Camilo.

I don't think anyone's mentioned it yet.

If I recall correctly from watching the first game on TV they mentioned that TSN has the rights to all the whitecaps games.

I absolutely HATED watching sportsnets coverage and I'm glad TSN stepped up. Most likely due to them losing hockey rights and having the ability to look at other sports.

Tapioca
03-12-2014, 09:16 AM
We did have a decent stretch last year when Rennie used a 4-3-3. However, other teams eventually figured out that Teibert can't use his off-foot well so that formation didn't work in the latter third of the season. Eventually teams will figure the Whitecaps out, but I remain optimistic that the Latin Americans have enough creativity to keep teams on their toes. It's also nice to see that we have goal threats from outside the box too.

Toronto being the first MLS team I ever supported, I'm pleased that perhaps this season I won't have to watch games expecting the inevitable horrible loss. Bradley was a beast all over the field, Defoe will cut apart unexperienced defences and they finally are playing some possession ball. Exciting prospects for both the caps and tfc this year. Hopefully they don't shit the bed Impact style halfway through the season.

The league is really tightening up. There's more competition than ever and that bodes well for MLS and soccer in NA in general.

I dunno. It sure looked like he tried to apply some downward pressure and drag along his inner leg. At the least he appeared to make no attempt to avoid putting his studs into his leg. I've seen people sent off in MLS for far less dangerous moves than that. Couple more pounds of pressure and that's how you break a guys leg.

Edit: seeing it replayed again I dunno. I agree it is harsh but I'm not convinced that pelletieri didn't try to put his boot down through him as he went over top.

Brianrietta

Our midfield seemed to be intimidated by NE's midfield which is probably why the back tried to play long-ball. I don't think NRC is effective sitting deep in the mid-field - he should be sitting farther up so that he has more freedom to make his runs. Laba is good enough to play the holding midfield role on his own.

Based on the last two road games, it seems that home field advantage for us is going to be quite important this year. We can't afford to lose any points at home if we want to make the playoffs.

About time they got rid of him. He wasn't worth the money we were paying him. Injured a lot and just herky jerky in his movement. When you a pay striker his kind of money you want a clinical finisher. People say he has great work rate, but we pay strikers to score goals, not run around... we already have people like Mattocks and Hurtado to do that. They should have gotten rid of him last season and made Camillo a DP.

The gap between production and salary was widening by the minute, so I'm glad he's done. That being said, when he had the service he *was* a clinical finisher, his goal in the season opener is evidence of that. Another thing is that they were playing him behind the strikers, he was withdrawn. He's not exactly going to score from a position like that, but one of his greatest strengths was the ability to still get the ball to someone despite being marked by two or three people. Hurtado hardly scores, hell he's lucky if he gets the shot on target...The guy has zero finish. Pace? Sure. Even Mattocks right now is more of a play maker, he has more assists than goals.

As for paying Camilo DP money...One good season doesn't earn you DP status. He already got a raise that season. Not only that, but it took Wondolowski three seasons of scoring consistently before San Jose of all teams made him a DP. I'm glad that turncoat jerk is getting no money at all thanks to his Mexican club going bankrupt. Karma is a beautiful thing.

It's still early in the season, but things are slowly coming together. Robbo seems to be showing lots of a faith in the younger players and they seem to be responding, at least when it comes to generating chances. Morales was a great addition, but I think the best acquisition in the off-season was Matias Laba. The guy runs all over the pitch and he knows how to tackle. A huge upgrade over Jun Marques Davidson in the holding midfield role. Considering that Gilberto has done nothing for TFC, TFC fans must be crying to have Matias back. Koffie seems to have woken up too and IMHO, he is best suited to be in the middle of the pitch instead of out wide.

There's been some chat about Nigel Reo-C being transferred after the Sounders game. I liked Reo-C. last year, but he came to camp in bad shape and there seems to be no room left for him. Squad rotation is always good, but Laba and Koffie look to be the duo going forward (combined salary of 550Kish) and Tiebert could always play there in a pinch.

The second leg of the TFC game was unfortunate, but the team was able to move on and had a great first half or so last night against Seattle. Aside from the horrible call on Jay, the team played well enough to win. Some more observations:

- Hurtado is like a different player this year - his touch seems to have improved and he no longer tries to barrel his way through defenders.
- Koffie had his best game of the year, and possibly as a player in MLS. He has all the tools to be a great box-to-box player, but he needs to be more consistent.
- Morales is great when he is on, but he struggles against physical teams, like Seattle.

Well, the Whitecaps are in a bit of a slump. 1 win since the World Cup break is not going to cut it if they want to make the playoffs.

The team clearly needs a striker that can finish. Morales, Koffie, and Laba are a solid midfield group, but the goal scoring seems to have dried up. On the other hand, it's clear our depth at centre back is being tested too. Leveron should anchor the back line for years to come, but Mitchell can't seem to get over his brain cramps. The transfer window is open for another couple weeks. What does management do?

With DeMerit off the books it open up cap space. But we need the striker first as much as Mitchell had a stinker today. There are rumours that Roque Santa Cruz is looking at an MLS club (read, Whitecaps) but then again transfer rumours will always change day to day.

Thread bump before possibly the biggest game for the Whitecaps in the MLS era.

I thought after the team shit the bed twice against Portland that the team was done for the season. However, with the exception of the stinker last night in San Jose, the Whitecaps have been playing well enough to have control of their own destiny. We don't know where the goals are going to come from game-to-game, but the midfield and backline look solid. Ousted has settled into the MLS nicely too and despite not being a great shot-stopper, he commands the box well and his distribution is excellent. Waston has been a helluva pick up and could be the type of CB that could play for the team for 5 years. If the team makes the playoffs and perhaps squeaks out a result in the play-in game, I would consider it a successful season considering all the shit that went on in the off-season.

Anyone else looking forward to watching next week's season finale?

Bump.

Playoffs (or play-in). Who steps up? I think it'll be Pedro with a PK and Ousted will get another clean sheet.

I'm expecting another Waston header to be the deciding factor. If not him, the Mattocks finally learns to stop being a little shit when he doesn't get the ball and comes back to help keep the attack going.

first time watching MLS game live the other day.... my god these players are horrid compared to europe football. so many simple mistakes, they play with ZERO urgency to win. Weak strikers . Zero individual talent.

Do not think i can watch MLS the same way after watching barcelona and real madrid :okay:

Are you actually comparing the Whitecaps to Barcelona? :suspicious:

MLS is fun and entertaining to watch for what it is. The highest tier of soccer in North America. I love watching EPL and Champions League, but I also love to watch the Whitecaps, understanding that it is a lower level of play. I don't expect Tiebert to be pulling off moves like Ozil...

Yeah, MLS is probably equivalent to the English Championship or perhaps the Scottish Premier League, but it is getting better. The game has nowhere else to grow, but in North America. It will get better, particularly with a club like NYCFC.

Nah it's just that no Vancoiver team can ever be cut throat and actually solidify a win.

Shitty call yea, bad timing, yea..but maybe don't put yourself in that position to have that call made. Push for a goal earlier, defend against the tieing goal, etc

Story of Vancouver sports teams, excuses.
