: Blood Red Full Eclipse Moon, April 14-15

Some may believe that this does not deserve its own thread; however, for me, a beginning astronomer, and an individual trying to figure out how to enjoy a romantic Spring night with his GF, it is.

For those who have the jiff of interest in astronomy, here is an interesting way to spend a romantic Monday night with ur GF/BF. There will be a total lunar eclipse on that night known as the "blood red full eclipse moon"; however any other lunar eclipse can be referred to this name too. Now what makes this lunar eclipse so special? Often, a full moon appears coppery red during a lunar eclipse, but what makes this 04/14/14 lunar eclipse special is that Mars will be shining right beside it. With Mars glowing fiery red right beside the red coppery moon, the view will be spectacular and incredible. Mars shines at its brightest every 6th year and this month, we are in luck. According to "The weather network", there might be a slight chance of isolated showers on Monday night so be prepared for disappointment if you are some what interested in seeing this event. Anyways, thought I'd share this idea with you guys since its a mini hobby of mine.

Pacific Daylight Time (April 14-15, 2014)
Partial umbral eclipse begins: 10:58 p.m. PDT on April 14
Total eclipse begins: 12:07 a.m. PDT on April 15
Greatest eclipse: 12:46 a.m. PDT
Total eclipse ends: 1:25 a.m. PDT
Partial eclipse ends: 2:33 a.m. PDT

yea, and my GF has her exams coming up too. i was hoping to watch the whole process of the lunar eclipse with her but i guess its just a glance up and done..

Good to know, would love to try and get some photos of this one.

If the weather is clear that day, please do and share some here for those ppl who are going to miss it =P

I would also like to add that if u just glance up into the night sky, you will see a reddish and blue white star. The visible bright red one is Mars and it will shine at a steady pace while the blue white Spica star will twinkle. I will probably look thru my dobsonian telescope some time this weekend and see if i can get a enlarged view of Mars. I haven't really had the chance to because of my schedule and the crappy weather; however the previous winter i had a good view of Jupiter and i saw its gas clouds plus its four moons lined up.

Be careful of werewolves. When a werewolf bites you during a blood moon, instead of dying you will become one too.

No telescopes/binoculars are needed but its not a bad idea to use them if you already own one. With my current telescope, I could see big and medium size craters on the moon right down to the details and I have to say its spectacular. As for location, if you want to maximize your experience and view more than just the blood red lunar eclipse, you can go to cypress, Burnaby mountain/park, Garry point park on Steveson or whytecliff park in West Vancouver. With those locations, light pollution will be minimal and you will see thousands of other stars.

Did you go to the Jungle party and other themed parties before the full moon party ? Almost as dope.

Can you see it at any place that is dark as fuck?

It's the moon. If you can see it during the day in the city, I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter where you watch it at night... ;)

Unless you want to see Mars at the same time. Then go somewhere like the Abbotsford Dark Sky park.

to the top if u want zero light pollution. Those other places that ive already mentioned are really good as well.

yup. and directly under mars, u will see a faint (depending location) blue white star twinkling. theres an app called google sky maps for android and sky view for iphones where u point ur phone up in the sky and it'll show u what stars, planets, galaxies and other stuff are in that direction.

heres a quick cell phone pic i took last night at the ft86 meet. sry for all the light pollution

Just some random night last year on my deck

Edit, damn 1246 it begins, the moon is well past my field of vision at home by then so probably won't be able to see it without going out

I wonder if I can 'buy' a telescope for tonight and then return it the next day :lol

EDIT: Nevermind! Looks like Canadian Tire has some telescopes!

i-vtecyo
04-14-2014, 08:02 PM
you can rent them, but its not worth it. its like 45 per day. Instead u can buy a decent one for around 150-200. Craigslists got some good used ones too if u know ur telescopes.

A bit cloudy tonight... hope it clears up later.

It's completely clear off towards the moon right now in Chilliwack. I was planning on just crashing tonight but I might head out and try to find some actual darkness.
