This looks so horrible.. The wife's accent is enough to make me never want to watch it. And the way Eddie talks like Vanilla Ice has always bothered me.
Have to admit, the market scene was pretty funny though, but that's about it

gave it a go last night
pretty bad...acting, racial jokes and accents were all too forced
some parts were relateable though being an asian immigrant in the 90's
this show wont make it past half a season before being canned.

It's so off-putting having an extremely effeminate man portraying an alpha male... The mom is too pretty/young looking and her fake accent is horrible.
The casting in this is just so wrong, with the exception of young Eddie. He's great
I may keep watching it just to have a short show to watch occasionally, and for the mid 90's nostalgia

wow this show is so cringe worthy. the korean dad:confused: and the retarded fake ass fob accent is enough to put me off :seriously::facepalm:
Randall Park, the dad, actually had issues being Korean playing a Taiwanese dude. The show even hired an accent coach for the chick and himself. I think they weren't really true to Eddie's book, so it got super fucked.

Few laughs but overall don't see this show lasting. I've said that before and been wrong though.. many sitcoms take a handful of episodes to get in the groove.
Music is good though!

Yeah, the recent interview with Eddie Huang and Randall Park on Joe Rogan's podcast was pretty insightful for the show. It's not like they were just in it for the pay day, there was genuine consideration and concern for portraying and representing the Asian community properly on network television.
I am happy to see it's been getting relatively good response overall (75% metacritic), and not so much white-washed cries of racism.

you know i figured out why the accents are so bad.
it's not the accents per se...
even if they have those crappy accents... it's their grammar.
they're using "accents" and speaking almost perfect grammar.
if they use those shitty accents and speak broken english like a real fob, it would be 100x better. They use very western slang and sayings, when in real life, fobs wouldn't be saying those things.
it's like being read Shakespeare with a fake fob accent. it just doesn't go together.
sonick

To that point, in the last episode (with the sleepover), the mom used a pretty advanced English idiom (can't remember what it was) that kinda threw me off.

Also the accent is nothing like what a mandarin accent sounds like... So it's double shit

Personally I think it's a great show, growing up during that time in a first-generation Asian immigrant family I find it super relatable. I even showed a few episodes to my dad and he was able to relate a lot to Randall Park's character as the struggle in the show to assimilate and create a new beginning in the West was spot-on, especially the part where Eddie's dad is chided by Eddie's grandmother about how being a "hard worker" does not have to mean a "hard father", and that Eddie's dad never had a good relationship with his dad because he was obsessed with showing his son the value of hard work as it closely mirrors nearly every Asian family's attempt to reconcile their own cultural views with more "Western" ideas of connecting with your kids. Not to mention I love 90s hip-hop culture so that is just icing on the cake. Plus the mom is kinda hot...
But that's the problem IMO. A few of my white friends have watched it, and though they do find it humorous, they "just don't get it". Things like the "success perm", "CLC", and the grandmothers' obsession with TV are pretty "Asian" things that a lot of non-Asians don't really get. Sort of like how we Asians watch "Friends" and don't get why they never lock their doors or take off their shoes, only it extends to the whole plot of the show.
Personally, I think people who are complaining that a Korean man is playing a Taiwanese man are just plain retarded and just want something to bitch about. I don't see people complaining when a white person of Italian/Irish descent plays a white American with a fake Texan accent, like Bradley Cooper playing Chris Kyle in American Sniper. I don't see it racist at all, and I am Asian, but rather I am happy that there are finally shows about Asian people and touches on our cultural idiosyncrasies.
Looking forward to how the show evolves as it goes on and we learn more about the characters.

I agree, but that's not really what people are complaining about. It's just poor casting, regardless of race.

For me, I think the series has been just okay so far. So far, it's had higher ratings than Parks and Recreation, but I don't know how much staying power it has.
I think I might have enjoyed Everybody Hates Chris more, which is literally the exact same thing but from a black family perspective.

Yep, you're totally right on that. All three shows are based on US families. The differences are:
Wonder Years - White family, 1968 to 1973, unspecified location
Everybody Hates Chris - Black family, 1982 to 1987, Brooklyn
Fresh Off the Boat - Chinese family, 1995 to ?, Orlando
While looking this up, it looks like there's actually another similar show currently as well.
The Goldbergs - White family, 1980's, Jenkintown, Pennsylvania

I couldn't stand the wonder years. Always turned the channel when it came on.
I love FOtB though. More relateable to me for sure. Since it's still early in season one, every actor is still just settling into their roles. I fully expect s2-s3 (if it gets there) to be really good.

too bad. makes me wanna read the book now, has anyone read it?
i heard it was very "real" and he brought up tons of issues like asian domestic violence and like... what it was like to be an asian kid, like the dark side of asians perceived by progressive westerners lol.

They're nothing alike apparently. His parents hated each other, and constantly fought. He was on twitter complaining about it, but it's a fucking family sitcom, so I don't know what he expected.
Anyway I doubt there's any one way asians grew up, so it could go either way. I'm sure some people relate to the show, and some would relate to the book. To me that part is not really relevant, I just think it's pretty funny, especially the two young kids.

'Fresh Off The Boat' Author Eddie Huang SLAMS Series, Says It's 'Far From The Truth,' Do You Agree? [POLL] : The Eye : Fashion & Style (http://www.fashionnstyle.com/articles/56257/20150410/fresh-off-the-boat-author-eddie-huang-slams-series-says-far-from-truth-do-you-agree-poll.htm)
I haven't read the book but this article sums up Huang's feelings pretty well.... basically he hates the TV show because ABC turned it into just another family sitcom that tries to be funny instead of touching on issues surrounding Asian culture. Things like: beating your kids, expecting perfection in nearly everything you do, "pushing" your kids really hard, and how Asian parents put down their kids all the time. Obviously I'm generalizing, but Huang apparently wrote about a lot of these things in his book but nearly all of it was cut out.
...personally I find there is not a whole lot that is "relatable" to me except little Eddie's love for hip hop lol. But like Huang says, I enjoyed hip hop/rap and some darker rock because it was a reflection of the negativity in my upbringing. Maybe I just had a "bad" childhood but I don't recall either of my parents ever being that nice, either to me or each other. They were more of disciplinarians which the show doesn't touch on at all.
Randall Park is a decent actor but the second Eddie asked him about girl advice (in the show) and he actually GAVE it to his son instead of going on a long spiel about not thinking about girls and focussing on school/academics I knew the show had become "too" Western.
