Speed limits are being increased for several BC highways - CKNW.com (http://www.cknw.com/2014/07/02/speed-limits-are-being-increased-for-several-bc-highways/)

The maximum speed limit in British Columbia has been raised to 120 kilometres per hour.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone says a review has determined it is safe for drivers to travel faster along many roads.

“Speed limit changes will take place to approximately 13-hundred kilometres of rural provincial highways in the southern Interior, Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.”

Stone says, by the end of the summer, police should have more power to ticket so-called “left-lane hogs.”

“We’re going to bring forward changes to the Motor Vehicle Act to give police better tools to enforce the requirements to keep right, except to pass.”

No speed limits are being reduced, but other changes involve better warning signs about wildlife and new rules for the use of winter tires.

EDIT: another thread was posted while I was making this one, it has some more detailed info in it about exactly where the speed limits are raised and by how much http://www.revscene.net/forums/696417-b-c-raises-speed-limits-number-highways.html

They don't need more power. They just need to enforce what already exists.

Cool, I was just talking to a friend from Phoenix and she was telling me that a lot of their surrounding highways are 75mph (120km) and I was a little jealous.

Finally. Hwy 1 from Whatcom-hope is 110, Coquihalla from hope-kamloops is 120.

Now what they need to do is raise hwy 1 through burnaby/coquitlam from 90 to 100, and we'd be on the right track at least.

^Its 80 right now isn't it? Or is that how little I care about the speeds on HWY 1 as I follow everyone else doing 110-120  and not care about what the actual speed is.

During the day in sections it's back to 90, at night during construction it's 80.

It's about time this happened.

Still not fast enough to be safe.

80km/h zone should be 100km/h
90km/h zone should be 110km/h
110km/h zone should be 130km/h

and some 50km/h zone should be 60km/h or 70km/h

actually no, I think the safest speed is 135km/h and I read it somewhere.

They're talking about 10km/h increase is not enough too.

Yo probably watched it in the speed kills your pocket book where German people settle their cruising speed at 135km/h

Need to enforce minimum speed as well.

I feel that the city limit should be 60-65.

I dont mind it going 70 but I do feel that 70 is actually a lil fast..

HWY 1 speed limit is ridiculously low. when the speed limit is at 80, everyone is going between 110 and 120. When the speed limit is 90, everyone is going between 120 and 130. The 40 over law is the only thing stopping people from going faster lol

I go as fast as is appropriate. I spend all my time looking for cops rather than my speedo.

We know that "40km/h over the limit = excessive speed" is complete bullshit anyways.

If you go 65km/h on 30km/h School Zone (116% over the speed limit): NOT EXCESSIVE
However, if you go 150km/h on 110km/h zone on highway (36% over the speed limit): EXCESSIVE SPEED

I think Downtown Vancouver should be kept at 50km/h

But I think some 50km/h zone should be 70km/h just like Speed Kills Your Pocketbook video said.
