Better Call Saul's Crappy Suzuki Esteem Is An Inspired Choice (http://jalopnik.com/why-better-call-sauls-crappy-suzuki-esteem-is-such-an-i-1684976867)

During its five season run, Breaking Bad had the best cars on television. (These days that award probably goes to Archer, of course.) None of Breaking Bad's cars were flashy, high-end exotics like some Michael Bay movie, they were just unusual, fascinating choices that seemed to suit the people who drove them. I'm happy to see its prequel, Better Call Saul, will carry on this tradition.

Before Breaking Bad, the Pontiac Aztek was a total joke, a rolling monument to Old GM's managerial incompetence. (And let's be honest, it still pretty much is.) But Breaking Bad had the unusual effect of redeeming the Aztek to an extent. Now, it wasn't just an ugly, failed early crossover, it was "Walter White's Car." That show was the best thing that ever happened to it.

This story from Esquire makes me wonder if Better Call Saul could do the same for the Esteem, an unusual sedan that isn't as reviled as the Aztek, but has definitely been lost to the annals of time. I'll admit I couldn't even place it at first glance until I saw its badge.

The show takes place in 2002, years before Breaking Bad, so I'm not sure what kind of punishment this poor Esteem took in just four years, but it had to have been brutal. Belching smog and with faded yellow paint and a mismatched door, it's the ride of choice of cash-strapped lawyer/con-man Jimmy McGill before he becomes the infamous mob lawyer Saul Goodman.

Here's why it's such a great choice:

"In its sorry state, Jimmy's Esteem (pun very much intended by Saul's producers) is more a reflection of its owner's unrealized potential, and throughout the pilot, this stubborn survivor of Jimmy's tragicomic misfortune, including a smashed windshield thanks to some scheming skateboarders, becomes not only a visual metaphor for McGill/Goodman, but a character of its own"

http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/lqnbvogkaw24ypymozwq.jpg

Found a manual wagon Esteem. Ad's a month old though

twitchyzero
02-11-2015, 11:02 PM
I thought it was fairly obvious Gilligan/Gould wanted his beater as a metaphor...it even zoomed into the Esteem's decal in one shot haha
I'm still not sold on this show being something that will hold my interest over a few seasons...but it's solid enough to hit you in the feels for some scumbag lawyer in that B&W series opening scene.

Vince Gilligan is so meticulous with details, so it's pretty surprising that they seemingly made a pretty big gaff with his grand-daughter. Rough timeline of last episode would have been before 2002, and Mike was looking after her in Breaking Bad in like 2010 or so... but she seems to be about the same age.

Ambiguous timeline perhaps? Do we really know the timeline? BB was only two years total from start to finish wasn't it?

Just a little over 2 years. Walt was 49 turning 50 in season 1 and he turned 52 just when he was at denny's to purchase the BFG to take down Uncle Jack.

Speaking of time lines, Gus is alive and well right now. Would you think that he is just starting Pollos Hermanos? Maybe his partner's time is coming when they visit Don Eladio?

Walter Jr. having his first taste of breakfast after puberty, perhaps?

Yes, it was two years, but it wasn't ambiguous.

Timeline - Breaking Bad Wiki (http://breakingbad.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline)

Starts September 7th, 2009 and ends September 7th, 2011.

The grand-daughter should have been at like eight years older in Breaking Bad compared to yesterday's episode.

you have to remember even breaking bad was 75% slow burn but when shit goes down it just hits and ground running and swirls violently out of control...it really does pay off and then some.

even in the slow parts you can appreciate the little things; slipping jimmy conning in the street with the gold watch, mike going to the vet, etc etc

what I like about the show is it's like an extended GTA live action cutscene...you get the shady vet, the seedy senior home, happy go lucky family front that takes their money bag camping; ok, the guy with the creepy toilet was just straight up weird.

the only part of the plot that I don't give 2 shits about his chuck's mental condition and I feel it adds little to the overall show...chuck's eventual comeback? will be the downfall of jimmy and I just get the feeling it's a bit cheap

In the aftermath of recent events, Jimmy seizes the opportunity to reconnect with an old friend. Meanwhile, Chuck adjusts to a new way of life.

I personally really like Better Call Saul, and think it's a great addition to the Breaking Bad story. If anything, I feel like after the whole BCS series ends (whenever that may be) I'm super inclined to watch Breaking Bad all over again just to see how everything and everyone connects back into the story.

PS. I thought Mike's episode was SO good. I teared so bad when he started crying over Matt.

Should get a solid 4-5 seasons of this show. I can already see some awesome tie-ins and guest appearances from BB. It's endless really. No one knows anything from before BB so maybe Hank Schrader has a run in as a cop with Saul representing a client.

This show is about the little things. The way it's filmed and edited is absolutely top notch.

Dont think you need to watch more than 3 episodes of something to figure out if you don't like it.

What # of episodes would someone need to watch to figure that out? I just started watching BB. Do I need to watch 3 seasons before I realize I dont like it? Just saying.

I think they will definitely look into the very future and further when Saul does ultimately become the manager of the cinnabon. The thing I learned about Vince is that every part of the show has a purpose, almost every detail is accounted for.

They would not have shown a pretty depressed Saul watching reruns of his old TV commercials in the pilot if they didn't want a piece for the audience to think about and put it into the bigger picture. I'm digging this show so far.

Mike loves his pimento cheese sandwiches!

Streamable - simple video sharing (http://streamable.com/r3js)

had to google this lol

Pimento cheese is a common food preparation in the Southern United States, a spread or relish made with cheese. It is affectionately known as "the caviar of the South". The basic recipe has few ingredients: sharp cheddar cheese or processed cheese (such as Velveeta or American cheese), mayonnaise, pimentos, salt and pepper, blended to either a smooth or chunky paste.[1] Regional ingredients include cream cheese, Louisiana-style hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, cayenne pepper, paprika, jalapeños, onions, garlic, and dill pickles.[1][2]

Pimento cheese can be served as a spread on crackers or celery, scooped onto corn chips or tortilla chips, mixed in with mashed yolks for deviled eggs,[2] added to grits, or slathered over hamburgers or hotdogs.[3] Pimento cheese can also be used to replace the sliced cheese in a grilled cheese sandwich.
A pimento cheese sandwich may be a quick and inexpensive lunch for children, or it may be served as a cocktail finger food (with crusts trimmed, garnished with watercress, and cut into triangles) or rolled up and cut into pinwheels. Pimento cheese sandwiches are a signature item at the Masters Tournament.[4][5] Minor controversy ensued in 2013 when the Augusta National Golf Club switched food suppliers for the Masters but were unable to duplicate the recipe used by the previous supplier, resulting in a sandwich with a markedly different taste.[6] It is also a common snack in the Philippines, where it is referred to as cheese pimento.[7][8][9][10]

Another amazing episode. Mike showing why he doesn't need a gun. Dude is un-fuck-with-able. Seriously. So casual in his motions. Such confidence. Could darn near have his own spin-off show.

Wondering what was said to Kim by Howard? Explaining his distaste with Jimmy/Saul. Sliding Jimmy old tricks from the past? It certainly changed Kim's feelings about him.

Of course Chuck made the call. He's always been bitter about Jimmy's way and how he goes about things. Not a surprise at all.

How about that wood paneling on the Odyssey? Hilarious.

If people found it underwhelming, you're not digging deep enough.

This was the breaking point of Jimmy turning to the darkside. Throughout this entire season, we saw him start as Slippin' Jimmy and work his way to becoming Jimmy McGill. To pay Chuck back for taking a chance on him. To make Chuck proud. To prove Hamlin wrong. To catch Kim's eye. To not become Marco on that barstool. To make something of himself.

But after finding out the reveal about Chuck...feeling lower than low...losing his case and worse, his own brother...it broke him down. He loses it with his amazing "Kitty Cat Notebooks for Everybody" monologue and goes back to his roots.

Here he revisits his Slippin' Jimmy and not 10 minutes in falls perfectly back in step with Marco. Skirting the law again. Hasn't missed a beat. Just as good as he always was....if not better. Marco and Jimmy in perfect harmony, making suckers out of 'em all. And then he loses Marco.

Chuck is gone. Marco is gone. Both sides of that coin...both of his brothers...for both there's now this emptiness.

But here comes Kim to save the day! There's hope! Everything might just turn out ok. In yet another brilliant piece of cinematography...we see a shot of Jimmy outside the courthouse...he stops dead in his tracks "Looking East." A perfect profile of what he'd look like on that Kennedy coin. A new dawn. JUST THEN....he feels Marco's pinky ring. A reminder that....ya know what?

He just had the best week of his life too.

Why fight this anymore? For who? Chuck? Kim? Hamlin? Maybe. But that rush...that feeling he had with Marco...

Why not both?

And thus, the seeds for Saul have been planted. It's not an ambiguous ending. It's the beginning of Saul Goodman.

I may be reading way too in to their cinematography (but to be fair...they're pretty deliberate with it.) The final shot is of Jimmy driving "west" if you will ...away from the promise of a new path at the courthouse. And we pan down to the exact middle of the road....

He may be straddling the line between Jimmy and Saul...but he's now on his way.

tl;dr - If you dig deeper, it's not an ambiguous / underwhelming ending. It's an emotionally powerful ballad on a Shakespearean level...and now I can't tell up from down because I think I may be starting to like Better Call Saul better than Breaking Bad.

If all the fireworks are set off in the first seasons, what's left going forward? The series is really limited by the time between itself and breaking bad, so there's that constraint.

i don't think the ending was underwhelming. i mean he isn't selling meth or some other "crazy" shit, the only substance (no pun intended) to build on is HIM. the series is just being empathetic and feeling what he feels. and the moment he walked away from the courts and decided enough is enough, that he's gonna be true to his nature, and do what he does best...

imagine that feeling. that's what you were supposed to be feeling.

that's BREAKING BAD.

I wish it was more than 10 episodes per season tho. That's almost 10 months between seasons! Breaking Bad (after season 1) was 13-16. Walking Dead is 16 (split). It moves so slow for only 10 episodes.

If I don't compare BCS to BB it's an awesome character centered show, but I went back and watched a few episodes of BB today and BCS is definitely missing the moments that make you say "wow"

much of season 3 and 4 of breaking bad were also really slow...but the writers make it worth it in the end...we'll see if that happens here.

IGN did an interview with michael mando who plays nacho and i really liked his answer

IGN: I've always sort of viewed it as Breaking Bad's mythology. Yes, it is set in our own world and not some other fantasy reality, but there's the sense that the world is much bigger than what we're seeing on the screen.

Mando: I've always felt like Vince Gilligan bought this piece of land, and he built this great, beautiful building called Breaking Bad. Then he got the right to build another building right next to it, and that building is called Better Call Saul. Better Call Saul is on the second floor, whereas Breaking Bad, they've already built six floors. And there's secret tunnels, underground pathways, shared rooms, shared elevators of these two buildings.

They're completely standalone, they have their own foundations, but they have all these interconnected pathways that are being built. Hopefully, when Better Call Saul comes to its final season, those two buildings will stand beautifully next to each other and you can get lost inside of them and go from one to another and back and forth without ever feeling that you're losing a thread of what's going on.

I'm really ok with it moving at the pace it currently is, it's all about character building and telling the story and I think it's being done perfectly so far. There are so many shows these days that move quickly and huge shocks every week but with better Call Saul they don't need that since it's all about the shock at the end and the little twists that tie everything together.

I loved when he decided to go with the flashy suits to get fired and you can see him changing slowly which I think have been done perfectly so far. Sucks only 3 episodes left of the season.

Maybe it's just me, but is Kaley getting older as time goes backwards?? Like, she seemed a lot younger in Breaking Bad but maybe because she didn't have many lines.

Anyway, those twins from BB, damn they scary. Those skull boots are styling as fuck.

Yeah, this is one of the things that was noticed from the very beginning of BCS.

Even though BCS is supposed to happen like seven years before BB, Kaley is younger in BB than BCS.

oh what...I forgot there's only 10 episodes per season...I thought it was the standard 13 on AMC

yeah and despite being a sequel Mike looks tired and old as hell despite supposedly being 6 or 8 years younger. Nitpicking for sure but everything else seems pretty period correct (Hummer H2)

mm from an old interview the twins aren't even actors...they were security guards on a previous set that just looked downright menancing and got casted. I don't think they ever really had a line in breaking bad either.

this may come as a surprise to some of us. but it is difficult to make both a 10 year old girl, and a 69 year old man, not appear older, when BB started in 2009 (7 years ago) and BCS supposedly took place 5 years before that. 12 years total gap. heh

Well, Kaley isn't played by the same actress in BB and BCS, so the point is moot for her... but it's true for Jonathan Banks.

Banks, I understand because he has to be played by the same guy we all come to know. But definitely the producers could cast a girl to be more chronologically correct to play Kaley.

yeah, what's up with Kaley and the age gap? I understand Mike because he's old. Once you're old, you're old. But Kaley? She was playing at a playground close to the end of BB(2011?) yet here were are in the early 2000's and she's the same age?

RRxtar

i guess because she would be sperm if it was true time line. and maybe she will play a more important roll in BCS so they needed a character that would be more than just an infant.

Well here's Kaley season 5 of BB, and season 2 of BCS

Because tio threated his granddaughter and now he's going to take down the whole operation.

I like when Nacho tells Mike that Tio forgot all about his threats and has moved on. Mike, with the cold stare, "I haven't forgot".

Mike has got to be the most un-fuck-with-able character in a TV drama. Dude does not mess around.

Kind of an underwhelming season finale but it is a slow burn as SkinnyPupp mentioned. I'm sure it'll work out that the recording is muffled and non-admissible in court.

Best part, his commercial airs in the hospital and when it concludes the next ad is for the garden weasel. Clever.

knew when Jimmy went to chucks house exactly what was going to happen.. I think you will be able to hear it clearly but Jimmy is going to weasel out of it like he normally does. All I know the slow burn is awesome but so sucks that we have to wait another year now.

the season premiere was a snoozer

the episode this week though? so much happened...the writers for this show usually dont do this, this early on in the season

Another lovely bookend to something that started in “Mabel”: Jimmy’s rolling the blue tape off the wall with his thumbs, the way Chuck showed him, until he realizes he’s doing it Chuck’s way and goes back to ripping it down.
