PNE is here again. Ticket prices are $13, if you buy them online (https://secure.ticket-ops.com/The_Fair_at_the_PNE/eDirect). Feel free to post discount codes, here.

My wife showed me this handy page that'll give you a schedule of what's happening on the day you go:
The Fair at the PNE - Pacific National Exhibition, Vancouver, British Columbia (http://www.pne.ca/thefair/plan-your-day.html)

There's some cool stuff to see, like the familiar Superdogs, and the marketplace. We're looking forward to checking out the Game of Thrones exhibit, and the Circus in Wonderland.

GF grew up in east van and before I met her never really had much interest in it. But for the last 3 years we've been going at least 2-3 times a year. Great place to just hang out have some drinks and play some games

One more thing for those who are going to take advantage of free admission day....... you can only get the hand stamp after 1 pm when the two hour free admission window is over. In previous years, free admission was all morning. From 9:00 am till noon, IIRC. You could get hand stamped at any time. Before any of that, free admission day was just that, free all day long.

I heard free admission is from 11am - 1pm. They'll only start giving out stamps after 1pm for re-entry. You can come and go as you please from 11am-1pm.

My sister was at PNE on Sunday and said there was some guy selling this "puzzle game" in the "market place" area.
The deal was that if you can solve it in under 5 mins, you get the game for free.

His catch phrase was "Want to embarrass yourself?? It's free!"

She said her group of friends were given the opportunity to try it out, but the guy was taunting them and saying sexist things like
"don't bother, girls won't ever solve it. Go back to painting your nails". and overall, being a douche.
Maybe the specific salesperson? Maybe their style of marketing?

I obviously wasn't there, but just curious did any one else stumble upon this.
I'm curious what kind of puzzle game this was. lol

What.. there are tickets for GoT? Is the booth obvious? Are they free?

Splmash
08-20-2014, 12:30 AM
GoT was free. We walked in at 1PM and the line to get a free ticket was like 3 blocks long. When we left around 3PM, there wasn't a line and we got a ticket that had an assigned time (eg. valid after 8PM). I guess they do this to stagger the line and it's not too packed.

We got back at 9PM and lined up for another hour to go into the exhibit.

The exhibit was worth it IMO if you're actually a fan of the show. You get to go on this simulator where it looks like you're looking down at the wall and you get to sit on a replica of the throne. They also have lots of costumes, video displays and replicas of weapons from the show. Oh, and a lil gift shop at the end.

Free day was good. The animation display thingy was good. As for food, the rib places are a must. I asked for free samples before I chose the one I liked. One place gave me like a whole shitload to try out, LOL. Better than Costco. Anyway, ended up getting a cup of pulled pork at one the places. 9 bucks for beans, pulled pork and slaw in a plastic cup. Then got potato salad for two bucks at one of the other places. Best two bucks spent at the PNE.

Nothing new at the Market Place, but getting shoe shined for free and seeing a lot of familiar faces was good. South Asian guy selling pliers and cutters at the Market Place..... such a nice guy. I just buy stuff there for no reason, LOL.

The fly dome or whatever they call it was pretty bad. If anyone gets into the Game of Thrones thing, let us know if it is worth lining up over.

im thinking of going like half an hour early before PNE opens on a weekday so I can grab tickets to the GOT exhibit lol. not much I wanted to see this year except for that.

and yea that fly dome was horrible. so hot and humid in there and hard to breath. When I went in people were only standing in a circle. I felt like going right in the middle and just lay on the grass but it wasent worth it lol left after 5 mins

Gator bbq is so awesome mannnnn wish I had some of that right now!

only thing I thought that was awesome from the market place this year was this

Dunno about the ticket thing, but GoT was pretty good. Besides sitting on the throne, there's the Oculus Rift démo where you go up an elevator and then get shot with arrows and fall down a cliff.

We arrived st PNE at 1030 and scored one of the free spots on renfrew and pender! Checkin out the pig races now.

08-20-2014, 05:09 PM
the GoT exhibit is definitely worth it if you are a fan. i managed to get tickets yesterday. waited about 45 minutes to get into the exhibit. they limit the number of people inside so it's not crowded at all. you can spend as much time as you'd like looking at the artifacts. there are separate lines inside to sit on the throne or do the 4d experience. each about 20 mins long.

Ch28
08-20-2014, 05:19 PM
The GoT thing was only good for sitting on the throne. The Oculus Rift thing is a complete joke. You line up close to 30-40 minutes just to 'experience' a 60 second clip of you standing in an elevator as it ascends the wall. The show props were kinda cool, but they don't even have everything there. They didn't even have Longclaw or the Needle there!

Presto
08-20-2014, 05:21 PM
Although the Oculus thing was short, it was 60 seconds that sold me on getting one when the consumer version hits. It is awesome!

I went to PNE on Sunday around 4pm and couldn't get into the GoT exhibit, horrible planning and communication on PNE's part.
Apparently they were handing out "time slot tickets" in the morning first-come-first-serve, and hit max capacity by 3pm. The people holding the tickets were to walk around for 3-4 hours until their slot was open.

So basically if you planned to go to the fair to check out their MAIN feature, first they don't tell you anything at the gate. Then when you pay your admission ticket to go inside PNE, THEN they tell you Game of Thrones is sold out. :seriously:

Guess I gotta go back next week and pay admission again :okay:

melloman
08-21-2014, 08:34 AM
^^ PNE might not have announced it.. Yet I know CTV/CBC & CityTV have all talked about the whole "time slot ticket" thing.
And yeah, it's frustrating if you didn't know about it, yet it's really smart. You have a less crowded experience and could do everything in a shorter time. Instead of lining up for 3 hours to get inside, then lining up another 2 hours to sit on the throne..

I'll be going by noon latest on Saturday to get some tickets. (Hopefully)

You figure they could tell you BEFORE you buy the admission ticket. The least they could have done was communicate to the main gate ticket vendors that the GoT exhibit is sold out for the day so we don't feel ripped off?
It's a disgusting money grab.

It's like purchasing Beyonce concert tickets. Then you are settled in to your seats only to have the announcer tell you last second that Beyonce is sick so Rebecca Black will be performing for the night, no refunds!

It's $13 online and $16 if you buy at the gate.

You might not think that it's a big deal, but you have families that literally drive all the way out here from Abbotsford that spend the time, money, and gas to show up. Pay their admission and find out afterwards that the main attraction they came all the way out for is sold out and the only thing they can do is spend more money to come back another day.

You need to factor in gate admission ($13/$16), parking ($16), and gas into the equation. If you have a family then the costs increases significantly.

I got in for free during the free admission day, but I can see why people would be pissed off.

Hondaracer
08-22-2014, 01:51 PM
Though if you had a family id highly doubt you'd be lining up for 3 hours as the alternative if it was just first come first serve

Also there's a tonne of 2 for 1 admission passes all over the place

But yea, obviously with the amount of questions here there's definately a lack of communication

For starters, as I mentioned, it would be very easy to print out a sheet of paper saying "All time slots for Game of Thrones are full for the day" and tape it to the window of the admission ticket booth

... Instead, they tape the notice on the booth inside the fair that was giving away the time stamps :failed:

So just went to GoT thing:

You can get multiple timed passes any time they are available, she said there basically isn't a limit if you are a family

We walked into the PNE at 11 and were able to line up right away without getting a pass for later in the day. Waited for about 30 minutes outside, another 15 inside, and about 5 to sit on the throne?

Also the oculus thing was only about a 5 minute wait at this time as well. It was pretty cool and I'm glad I did it to see the technology but for the 60 seconds if you've gotta wait 30+ minutes I probably wouldn't bother.

I finally got in lol!
Went around 1pm Sunday, once again I asked the front admission booth "Are the GoT time slot tickets still available?" ... she drew a blank, the girl beside her was like "There should be but I'm not sure" (so basically pointless). I had to ask them to check, they called in a supervisor and she said yes the booth is still open.
I find the lack of communication for their main event quite disconcerting.

Anyway so I get to the booth, and ask for a time slot, they had some tickets left for the LAST SLOT of the day, 9:00pm. Almost got screwed again.

Picked up my ticket, left to eat lunch and run some errands, went back at 7pm, walked around the fair and stuff (again), lined up for GoT at 8:30, waited 45min. 20min for the Throne, 30min for Oculus.

Worth it? I think only if you are a fan.

That's what we did. Bee-lined to GoT as soon as we crossed the gate. The only waiting was the initial line up waiting for the exhibit to open. Once you get in, head for the throne, get a pic, and jump to the Occulus demo at the back of the room. Then, casually look at the other stuff.

Dueling pianos, all the farm stuff, free shows constantly on all the stages, free big shows at the concert stage, give aways, etc

Been twice for two full days so far had a great time both times. The happy hour at the main beer garden doesn't hurt either, $5 Canadians and $5 wine. Canadian is piss but for $5 I'll drink a couple, or 10

I gotta say, I had the WORST experience at the PNE last night. No wonder this shitty operation is dying.

1. Get into the PNE, the first ATM jacks my cash, without spitting it out due to connection issues.
2. Can't get into the Boys to Men concert because it filled up in literally 15 minutes, even though we were over an hour early.
3. Beer garden ATM is broken inside so you have to leave the garden in order to take money out. If you guys are starving for cash, why do you make it so difficult for people to actually get money and buy things? On top of that, only one bar was open when literally the beer garden was packed.
4. ATMs outside the beer garden break down constantly with lines galore to use them, each withdrawal took up to 5 minutes a pop. Are these damn things on dial up?
5. Concert starts, and for whatever reason, the live performance isn't played in the beer garden, even though previous years it was. So all us patrons had to listen to Lady Gaga, meanwhile Boys to Men are performing literally a few meters away Live.

Something about the complete lack or organization and clusterfuck really irked me last night. I almost want this thing to die off so some more competent folks can come in and organize this thing better. Very disappointed.
