ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Someone posted a video from the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on the Canuck thread; I didn't know much about ALS so I googled it.
So what is ALS?
From ALS Canada website:
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease. People living with the disease become progressively paralyzed due to degeneration of the upper and lower motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Eighty per cent of people with ALS die within two to five years of diagnosis– unable to breathe or swallow. Ten per cent of those affected may live for 10 years or longer.
Other neurodegenerative diseases include Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease and Parkinson's disease. According to the World Health Organization, neurodegenerative diseases are predicted to surpass cancer as the second leading cause of death in Canada by 2040.
ALS has no known cure or effective treatment yet. For every person diagnosed with ALS, a person living with ALS dies. Approximately 2,500 - 3,000 Canadians currently live with this fatal disease.
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is being used to raise awareness and funds for ALS.
Here are my favorite, top 10, challenges that I thought were quite creative and fun to watch.

are any other these pros/celebrities doing any donations or are they just making videos??
because unless they're doing something more than making a 2 min video and challenging others to do the same it's not really doing much more than getting the name out there....while i understand that is a good thing on it's own, the money can actually be used for research

The donations this year are already millions ahead of last year for the same time period, so it appears this challenge is doing what it should: bringing awareness to ALS and raising money. How is any of this bad?
Everyone knows about HIV, cancer, diabetes and even Parkinson's (Michael J Fox). How many people really know anything about ALS?

I hate when people talk like that...Charity isn't measured by whether or not giving makes a difference to one's personal finances but rather the simple gesture of selflessly giving to those who are in need.
$10,000 may not matter to him but it's still a huge gesture.

I studied ALS about 10 years ago when assisted suicide became a hot topic. Not only did it help me understand that debate but also just how serious this disease is. I donate a few times since then. I guess any donation is better than no donation but I sincerely hope people are donating through awareness and not because their favorite celebrity dumped ice on their heads.

A old co-workers husband found out he had ALS about a year and a half ago and he has been such a big strong man for as long as I have known him and he's a prison guard as well. He came into my work for the first time in months and I was shocked on the way he was looking. It's such a frustrating and sad disease, you might say this has turned into a shit show and not enough people are donating but at least it's making people more aware and most importantly this shit show is still brining in money and giving more exposure to ALS. As long as people keep donating that's all that matters since every bit helps.
I have been donating money to the cause for years and it does feel good to see other people donating as well.

Hit yourself with ice water OR donate 100 dollars? wtf. how does that make any sense and how does it drive awareness to the cause, if anything its taking people away from the true severity of the disease.

Is that what the challenge is? I never read it because I didn't care.
How morbid have we become when we ponder giving money to a charity vs. dumping ice water over our heads?
I'd dump ice water over my head because it's fucking SUMMER. And I'd still donate to ALS because your body slowly dies and your healthy mind along with it. It's fucking awful.

^ i think you guys are missing the point.. like i posted in another thread.
a guy with ALS challenged his friends to dump a bucket of ice water on their heads to raise awareness... like everything that goes viral it had to be something simple everyone could do but normally wouldnt.
most celebrities doing it (obviously for attention) did end up donating as well and for those who dont donate they are clearly helping the trend and thats to spread awareness... if it didnt work would it be viral right now and have 50x + the donations as previous years?
so yeah i agree its dumb.. but its simple marketing and its doing exactly what it was meant to do

It was started in 2012 by a baseball player with ALS, the deal was supposed to be get ice dumped on you and donate $10, or don't get iced but donate $100. Followed by then nominating 3 others to "take the challenge". Obviously a bunch of idiots have bastardized it but at least some people have gotten the point.

Exactly! It is absurd, but it's absurd by design; and the countless examples like Deadmau5 is proof that the absurdity clearly has merit.
Many people just see this as a way to increase their own fame
In a way yes, but a big driving force behind this phenomenon are by people who don't need, nor want the extra fame anyways (at least for the videos I watched), and I think that's the gesture or sentiment that's really reaching out to a lot of people. At least for me, that's how I see it anyways.

Fame = easy money and tons of sex with admirers
I'm a complete fucking nobody but when girls are introduced to me after having read my book or hearing about me from someone else they generally drop their panties at the first chance
10k is a drop in the bucket for those people, but I guarantee that they just got a ton more followers and buzz around their names due to the charity

Also all these famous people have been challenged by another. What makes you think they're all doing it for more points in the fame bucket?
The problem we have here is ego filled questions with ego filled answers. We see the good benifits of this yet here we are ignoring them and talking about the people rather than the subject of their actions

I don't think you made a point here and at the same time you definitely MISSED the point...
If there are people who are trying to post these videos to further their own personal careers and wealth, so be it...there is nothing you nor I can do about that. It's a consequence of the viral media campaign which HAPPENS to be generating a LOT of money for the cause. Anyone abusing the challenge for personal gain isn't HURTING the cause...they are in a sense still helping it.
I could waste my entire life looking all over the world for people to criticize but it would be a never ending task (which is why I just do it on RevScene.) But if someone is abusing this charity campaign, who cares? They're not hurting it and they're certainly not hurting you. LET THEM EAT CAKE.

But if someone is abusing this charity campaign, who cares? They're not hurting it and they're certainly not hurting you. LET THEM EAT CAKE.
Hey I never said it was a bad thing! It went so viral because of the star power, and fame-seekers love, love, love to do anything that makes people pay attention to them and their projects. Bill Gates' did a great job on his and it is obvious from his other work with malaria that his intentions were pure. He is someone people should look up to and not Charlie Sheen or Dan Ballsberg.
To admit to hipsterism is asking to be put in stocks and pillory, it is natural for me to dislike and poo-poo anything from the establishment. My close proximity to Main and Hastings definitely gives me a punk-anarchist vibe in my brain. I am often a dick but I have made peace with Jah and can accept that.
Also, if you want a book I'd rather sell you a paperback in person!

Hundreds of millions of dollars were raised for a disease that affects 0.009% of the population... Again charity is always good, but I wonder if this is taking attention from diseases that affect a lot more people, that could also use some research funds?

I don't like most internet trends (I still don't know WTF the Harlem Shake is, nor do I ever care to find out), and I was prepared to completely ignore this one as well after seeing it pop up on my own feeds. But I'm kinda happy to see that for once an internet trend is being used to further a good cause.

It's a valid point, but at the same time you have to think about how many of these relatively unknown diseases are lacking proper funding because they don't receive any sort of mainstream attention. Yes, proportionally this one is receiving an "unfair" amount of attention, but maybe (doubtfully, unfortunately) this one giant push of funding will be enough to help finally find a cure.

At the end of the day someone is always going to be worse off, people help where they feel compelled, and helping anywhere I consider a good thing. Much better than everyone just being selfish, and not helping anyone.

yeah ALS doesn't affect that many people, but if they could fix ALS, that would mean they could fix a lot of other things too (and the brain is one thing i would like them to put more effort into maintaining/fixing)... i know eventually all my other body parts can fail and be replaced with machines or cloned or printed versions... but the brain... we can achieve immortality of the body, but not the mind...
and maybe stephen hawking can live longer and think of more shit, lol, his knowledge and insight alone is worth more than 1,000,000 normal people's lives. hahaha.
so yeah in my perspective, if we can even put 10 more years in HIS life, and only his life alone, it's worth it. but the reality is, it will affect more than just him.

Newsreader beautifully shuts down ALS challenge:
While it's undoubtedly in a good cause, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has reached the point of near-ubiquity on the internet. When someone challenged Queensland newsreader and seemingly pretty bloody ripper bloke Lincoln Humphries to tip water over his head in the name of charity, he gently but firmly shut the idea down.
After starting out his video by nominating "everyone everywhere", Humphries acknowledged the good that the ice bucket challenge has done, then suggested some other things we could be doing to make a difference, including spreading the love around to other deserving causes like cancer and fresh water charities, and not wasting so much damn ice.
Never before has the regional broadcaster WIN been more worthy of its name.

Some organizations run much more efficiently then others. 7% is a shockingly low number.
I don't know if the numbers he found are tabulated differently then how some sites like charity watch, or charity rating sites add up values.
For what its worth I havnt researched this at all, but ChildFund, or Christian Childrens fund as it was previously known, was once publicly humiliated for their high fees and high administrative costs. Today Childfund manages to only take about 20% of each dollar. That means that 80% of each dollar donated actually goes towards helping those who need it.
That's a pretty bleak comparison to the 7% of ALS.
certainly makes me curious why the gap is so large...
EDIT: That guy is a nutjob, ALSA spent almost 72% of their budget on services directly related to their cause. While that number is still low compared to most well run organizations, ALSA is also pretty small in comparison to salvation army, and childfund. So it is difficult for them to stack up the same.
Should have known, this is what you get when you try and defend the point of some dumbass who posted a video on worldstar for christ sake.
The guy mentions 7% because that is all that went directly to research. What this clown ass guy neglected to mention how another 63% went towards actually helping communities affected by ALS, and those who have the disease.

Of course, there are several of these things circulating the 'net now, claiming all sorts of different small percentages of donations "actually going to research" and stating "we've been duped" and "I've done my own research"... and you nail the problem right here: most people DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT THE NUMBERS ACTUALLY MEAN.
Snopsing these claims, we find this:
Charity Navigator's breakdown of the ALS Association's finances for the fiscal year ending January 2013 shows that 72.4% of the ALS Association's budget during that period was used for program expenses — that is, the programs and services the ALS Association delivers to the ALS community according to its mission, such as professional and public education, research into ALS treatments and cures, and patient and commmunity services. Of the remaining budget, 11% went to administrative expenses and 16.5% to fundraising expenses. It appears that someone confused the term "program expenses" with "overhead" and mistakenly assumed the former represented money spent on bureaucracy rather than the vital ALS-related services provided by the ALS Association.

The ALS Association spent 79% of our annual budget on programs and services last year, which includes 28% on research, ONE of three main pillars of our charitable work (see below for breakdown).
Not sure where Assclown there gets 7%... But here's something even more interesting people would find, if they bothered to do a little easy research beyond just finding random internet articles that support their own prejudices:
If a donor would like 100% of their donation to go to research, he/she can simply check a box on our online donation form here. If a donor already donated and would like to redirect their donation, please email us at donations@alsa-national.org.

Here's a good post about the subject, bringing up some things I hadn't even considered (I'll highlight them below): StormWrestling.com - Commentary (http://www.stormwrestling.com/083114.html)
I've finally been challenged to do the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge (IBC). Well actually I've been "Nominated" twice in fact, by people who apparently don't understand the difference between a Challenge vs. a Nomination. That may be a silly point but considering "Challenge" is right there in the name it drives me nuts that most people seem to get this concept wrong.
Enough picking of nits, there is some serious business afoot that needs to be addressed. Until I was challenged personally I've been content to sit on the side lines biting my tongue happy to stay out of this whole deal. I'm not a fan of beating my head against the wall, and I fear what I am about to say will amount to little more. Like many of you I have clicked on and watched many of the IBC videos. We have done so no doubt because they are very entertaining, and in there lays the rub.
These videos are, for the most part just entertainment. They entertain those who watch, offer a placebo effect of doing good to the person who does them, and generates a whole bunch of money for people who don't suffer from ALS. I know this won't be a popular view, which is why I've stayed out of it as long as I could, but now that I've been called out, I'm going to speak my mind. Anyone who knows me knows I'd rather be right than popular any day, which may explain my rather small circle of friends, so here I go.
There are three basic flaws in this IBC (Or the upcoming Pink-Tober & Mo-Vember campaigns) and it is not until you get to that final third fatal flaw that this whole thing falls apart. This is probably by design because as long as no one looks too deeply everyone can live in denial and just feel good about themselves. Yes I realize that most people involved in this mean well and have good intentions, but a lot of false hope was built on good intentions and when people are suffering from diseases and people are giving away their hard earned money, false hope and good intentions don't really amount to much.
The first flaw is that a lot of people taking up this challenge are just doing creative videos of themselves dumping water on their heads as a vanity project to get attention and pat themselves on the back for all the good they are doing, despite not donating a single penny. The excuse or denial here is "Well at least we are creating awareness, look at the national donations, they are way up". Way to pass the buck. I'm sure you're individual video was the one that made the difference. For those who did in fact donate or are pacified with the "I've created awareness" we then have the second flaw.
What is the ALSA doing with all of this money? The truth is the vast majority of the money you are donating is not going towards research and finding a cure for ALS. The numbers are disputed somewhat. I've heard people claim as low as 7% is going towards research and the ALSA claims that number is closer to 27%. Lets for the sake of convenience and benefit of the doubt, use 25%. Three quarters of the money you donate to help find a cure isn't going where you want it to. Most of it is going towards "Awareness and Education", which could be translated to be read "Advertising and Promotions" to ensure more money gets donated so they can again put only one quarter of it towards what they are claiming it's for in their promotion and advertising. It is a deceitful cycle that keeps a lot of people employed earning great livings while delivering very little of the money donated to the cause they are promoting. To this we offer ourselves the excuse, "Well 25% is better than nothing, that is still a lot of money, and someone has to run these charities" To this I offer you the popular concept of cutting out the middle man. Why are we donating to these Charity groups that only deliver a small percentage of our donations to the research groups? Why not donate directly to the people that are actually doing the work, the people trying to discover treatments and cures?
This is the third and final flaw. The reason we don't donate directly is because then we would discover that the portion of our donation that isn't going towards salaries and advertising, that 25% that we think is actually doing good, is going into the pockets of Big Pharma. Yes the pharmaceutical companies are getting your money. You are giving your money to some of the biggest, richest, most profitable companies in the world. You are helping cover the cost of their research and development programs to allow them to make higher profits. You are not financing new research, this is research they are already doing. This is how they make their money after all. They create new drugs to treat diseases, and when they find a new treatment they patent it and sell it back to you at a huge profit.
Think about that for a minute. Millions upon millions of dollars are being GIVEN to a company to help find a cure or treatment of a disease and if they find a cure/treatment, the people you GAVE that money to will then patent that cure and sell it back to you at a huge profit. Wait...What...profit? I thought we donated to Charity, a non-profit organization. Oh right that's another reason why we don't donate directly to the people doing the research if we did they wouldn't be able to claim it as a non-profit or a charity, and they are creating these drugs with the sole intention of making profits, hundreds or millions of dollars in profits. Yes your good intentioned donations, or at least the part that isn't going towards salaries and advertising, that huge 25% of it, is going towards increasing the profit margins of some of the richest most profitable companies in the world. Doesn't that make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
I think I will end my rant here because I don't want to get started on all of the harm Big Pharma is doing to our medical system. If you've been to the doctor in the last decade you've no doubt already discovered that doctors no longer treat patients, they prescribe drugs to them. If you go to a doctor because you are experiencing severe back pain, the first course of action is to prescribe painkillers. A good Dr. if you are lucky enough to find one of the good ones, will also advice you that weight loss and exercise to reduce the strain on your back and strengthen your core would probably solve your problems completely, but unfortunately most people are too lazy for that and would rather just fill their prescriptions.
And with that we've come full circle and found the root of the problem, laziness; one of the original seven deadly sins: Sloth. It's far easier to just dump a bucket of ice water on your head, wear a pink ribbon in October, or grow a silly moustache in November, than it is to look a little closer and find out that there is a huge problem with the system. While I have not looked as closely as I probably should have, thanks to my friend Paul Lazenby, my eyes are at least open. I will not be accepting the Ice Bucket Challenge, because I do not wish to give my money to Big Pharma and since I have no need to stroke my ego by doing a fun video to illustrate what a great guy I am, I don't see the point.
That said I will be looking into finding an ALS related charity that actually helps those suffering from the disease and donate my $100 to them. If that proves too hard a task I will just go out and find someone who is suffering from the disease and give them my $100.
In closing I would just like to clarify that my intent was not to damn those who have taken part in the IBC or other charity fund raisers. Most of you, as I stated earlier, mean well, I'm just suggesting that if you really want to make a difference, good intentions alone don't really accomplish much.
I look forward to your letters and email,
Lance

Looks like this ice bucket thing may have led to a death. No proof, just my suspicion, but Joan Rivers dies after a heart attack during a surgical procedure. She's 81 years old. Sheesh............. why court death?

RIP, Rivers. Lived a full life. Pissed off many people and eventually it took its toll. Lesson number one.......... don't piss off Johnny Carson.
Don't know why the fail, but she was having surgury done on her vocal chords when she suffered the heart attack.
I don't know about you guys, but ice bucket thing can't be good for anyone. Coaches have always hated gatorade showers. George Allen, football coach may have died from the result of a gatorade shower.
Allen's death may have been indirectly caused by a Gatorade shower. He died on December 31, 1990, from ventricular fibrillation in his home in Palos Verdes Estates, California, at the age of 72. Shortly before his death, Allen noted that he had not been feeling well since some of his Long Beach State players dumped a Gatorade bucket filled with ice water on him following a season-ending victory over the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on November 17, 1990 (he remarked that the university couldn't afford actual Gatorade).
