It's all part of giving you all those neat personalized features that you love and expect from your advanced technology.

This is actually handy, sometimes I don't update my work calendar for a few days and then I forget where I was and for how long when I need to submit my hours. Seeing as the GPS reception sucks on my phone, and I usually have the WiFi off so it isn't constantly latching onto Shaw Go and Starbucks hotspots, it only gives a rough approximation of the area I was in, anyway (cel tower triangulation).

It's turned off by default unless the user turns it on themselves.
Essentially, Google is the tool you used to track yourself.

Personally I don't mind. I get updates on my phone about where I parked (in case I forget), travel time to work/school/home as well as showing me alternative routes to take to save time. I got nothing to hide and don't think I'm interesting enough to stalk so I could care less

Not possible with Bluetooth, but location data is why Google Street View cars were recording WiFi locations as they travelled around. You also don't need a data connection for tracking to work on cell towers - the phone merely logs what towers it's picking up as you go along (action@location type apps like Llama will even show you those logs).
Between that and the WiFi, you can get an approximation (usually within 100-200m) of your position, but typically not much more refined than that. High-accuracy location requires GPS.

Ughh the google now cards are really creepy in how handy and accurate they are.
I still remember the first time I parked my car, I went into a seminar, and half way through I saw the card notifying me of where and when I parked my car.
Slowly I have gotten used to it, the features are handy as all hell, as you can monitor when you parked, and if you have to go back to the car to add more for parking or w/e.
Overall i'm fine with it, "the man" can watch me all he wants, he's the one thats going to get bored, since I am pretty boring.

Speaking of google cards, does anybody else have this issue where cards come up asking you if you are interested in some random place you never googled?

It isn't exactly accurate, it shows me being places that I haven't been to in the 30 day period, primarily SFU. I have a feeling it's including cell towers, I don't know why, it's also leaving out certain locations I HAVE been to lately.

Creepy describes it best for me, too. It can discern whether I'm driving or on the bus, based on frequency of stops I'm guessing.
One morning in the middle of the school term I decided to not go to class... 10 minutes after I usually get on the bus, Google Now gave me the departure times of my bus from the exact stop I use.

As much as I know privacy is lost and all that jazz, it still creeps me out a bit knowing how much one private company is starting to be able to control.
I meant that it was never lost.
it was NEVER there.
just cuz no one was watching you before, didn't mean you HAD privacy. it just meant no one was watching.
now that there's someone watching, you get the feeling of "losing" privacy. but it was NEVER there to begin with. it was just an illusion.
privacy means hiding, constantly working toward hiding and not sharing information. most people don't constantly hide or try to hide info. the info was ALWAYS there... just someone is cataloging it now.
if you constantly delete your history, and edit your digital footprint, that's the privacy you have created for yourself. if you're constantly battling the environment you live in, trying to hide your footprint, that is creating privacy.
if you're not... you never had privacy.
much like if you always ran around naked in a field and no one else was there.... then suddenly people started to show up, you didn't lose any privacy. you never had that privacy. you just THOUGHT you did. it's all in your head.
privacy invasion or privacy lost goes something like this...
you built a hidden area where you could do anything you want... the hidden area was INTENTIONALLY built so no one could see. then someone comes by and punches a hole in the wall and sticks a camera there intentionally. that's privacy lost.
privacy isnt innate. privacy isn't some right you're born with. privacy is something you have to constantly build around yourself everyday. repairing it and rebuilding the walls everyday. that's privacy.
building a fence around your backyard so u can have MORE privacy... so that passing people cant peer in... or your neighbours can't peer in. but then you're still got no privacy against the sky. anyone flying over can see you. if you get angry cuz someone fly's over you and records you... that's your problem. you should build something to cover the sky.
privacy is something you must act on and build on, ACTIVELY, everyday... to hide from everyone else. like someone that doesn't wanna be found. every step, you have to cover up yourself. that's privacy.
imagine if you were a famous celebrity, or a criminal on the run... or just a very "private" person. the lengths they go to hide their tracks, is the lengths all of you pro privacy people should go to cover your tracks. and if you use a program that doesn't allow you to hide the way you want... you stop using it. simple. you're using THEIR program, running around in THEIR area, they will watch you. if u don't want them to watch you, stop running around in their space.

They are. Are your ads primarily sexual based? :troll:
Ulic Qel-Droma
08-20-2014, 12:43 PM
lol, please, explain to me why you guys disagree.
is it not the same as you sitting on your balcony? and someone watching you from afar (or up close across the street). the balcony is open space. anyone can peer in.
if you WANT to have privacy, you go inside, and shut your blinds. if your blinds are open, that's still open space for all to peer in.
it's no different than anything else. if you're in a viewable area, with NO intent to hide (shutting your blinds), then anyone can and has the right to view you.
don't tell me if you're standing on your balcony and i look at you, you're gonna say that's an invasion of privacy...
the roads are public. the sky's are public.
if you can see it and it can see you, through a direct line of sight, it's fair game.
you use their app, in return they will use you.
the "feeling" of being watched does NOT justify crying privacy rights violated.
i can say i've been watching many people with a telescope in their own homes. or flying my drones by your balcony. what's the diff?
the only diff is now you're aware someone is watching. so what do you prefer? just being ignorant and not knowing someone is watching? really... how are you gonna argue or fight it?
"I DONT WANNA BE WATCHED! THEY JUST SHOULDNT WATCH ME! THEY SHOULD RESPECT MY DECISION!!!"
yeah ok buddy. they "should" but guess what, they won't and they never will. so keep on whining and see how much privacy that gets you. if anything that just draws more attention to yourself. the more u whine the more they pry.
just like being around stinky people on the bus or any public area is violating my rights to a comfortable life right?
you're exposed. you're always exposed. information is always there for others to take. information is free. it is ingrained in every atom that exists around you. if you wanna hide, it's YOUR responsibility to hide.
if u wanna live in a cave, you have to build a cave around you. the cave doesn't just simply exist.
if you wanna be a ninja, you have to wear black and be sneaky. the world isn't going to blend in with you and pretend they can't hear you.
you will be watched. you will be recorded. someone WANTS to do that, and they will do it no matter how you feel. the world will never bend to backwards to cater to those who feel uncomfortable cuz they don't wanna be watched.
just like they wanna record and watch you, and they'll go to great lengths to do it. if you wanna hide, you must do the same, and go to great lengths to hide.
that's the REALIST PRAGMATIC answer. thats how the world WILL work and continue to work for the far foreseeable future.
your ideals of "privacy rights" are disillusioned crazy thoughts.
what do you guys propose? a law? who the fuck would pass that law? who the fuck would follow that law? that law would be a joke, like j-walking and littering.
no one would follow it.
there IS no solution. the technology is out there to grab all sorts of info, and YOU are part of that info.
the solution is just become an open book. everyone is an open book. that or actually TRY to hide your ass.
it's give and take. those who choose to be open books will have greater freedom of mobility and access to information, those who choose to hide will have lesser freedom of mobility and access to information.
it's up to you to choose which path you wanna take. there is no alternative.
fighting for privacy rights, is the same as fighting for white only drinking water fountains based on the idea that blacks violate their "rights" to their way of life. that somehow any one person or groups privacy or way of life is more valuable and better kept segregated.
the idea is just absurd. and will be completely be eliminated within 2 generations.
when faced with the inevitable, the wise choice is to submit and join the winning side or live a second rate life of self imposed limitations.

Shit. For once I agree with Ulic. :lol
I don't have anything to hide, so I don't particularly care if I'm being "tracked" by Google (whether by location tracking or website searches). No, I'm not the sort of person to go out and tell everyone, "Hey, come into my home... I don't want privacy!" but at the same time, technology has advanced to such a point where it's almost impossible to live a normal, every day life (at least in a civilized, first world country) without having some sort of device -- phone, internet, camera-based toll billing -- tracking your movements. The only place where I still want privacy is when I'm taking a dump; otherwise, have at 'er.
Yes, I may have some voyeur tendencies, so feel free to watch me and my girlfriend bumping uglies in the bedroom. :ratedb:
