One of my best friend's mom runs this place - she's seriously passionate about teaching Mandarin and from people that I've talked to and recommended taking classes there all have said they loved it. IIRC, they have multiple locations as well. Suzanne is the one you should talk to if you want to get more information - I'd definitely recommend it to anyone that wants to learn Mandarin at any level.

My buddy is taking beginner classes at Thunderbird Community Center. Its about 3 months/12classes every monday for $35!

I'm not sure if they have it on any other day but for that price. Its a steal.

Plus he mentioned he's enjoying it. If that matters lol..

I would love to learn Mandarin. After seeing the Facebook guy speaking it I knew I had to step my game up. LOL! j/k. Seriously though, the lower mainland is a changing environment and speaking Mandarin would only be an asset at this point.

there's learning mandarin, then there's learning actual IRL mandarin.

it aint easy conversing wit the chiner fobs, they tend to speak really fast and use a lot of slang and slur their words

classes are great for building up your foundation. and also to give you a running start

in parallel you need to: actively meet mandarin native speakers (hopefully who know some english as well). try a language exchange or something (your english for their mandarin)

watch some mandarin television
go get yourself a mandarin speaking boyfriend/girlfriend
mandarin videos on youtube (most have subtitles as its Karaoke driven)

having said that, the language is easier to get into if you learn not just ping yin, but how to read/write characters.

you really have to immerse yourself. the advantages you have today with all these resources of the internet make it so much easier (literature, tutorials, worksheets, videos). you could even have skype sessions with others willing to teach you
