Hesitant to decorate for christmas

Wasnt sure where to post...
We (the girl and I) rent a basement suit. We have our own seperate entrance and driveway. Anyways, During October we where setting up for halloween as we enjoy the kids knocking on our door and they (the tenents upstairs which are the landlords kids) politely but firmly told us they do not want us inviting the devil onto their property, or want us celebrating something that they strongly dissagree with due to beliefs. We kindly removed our decorations, and went out for dinner on Halloween instead. Disappointing because we did not even wear the costumes we bought.
But...
Now is christmas! We have setup our tree but we have since closed all of our curtains because we do not want them to know how much we love christmas. Usually we would have things in the windows, door coverings, wreaths, decorations on our vehicles and walkway and so-on but now we feel ashamed of celebrating christmas. They said its silly that anyone would celebrate Christs Birth in December when in fact no-one knows when he was born. I dont mind other religions, but even the chinese and hindu religions celebrate christmas. Now, I'm feeling ashamed of setting up my decorations, playing christmas music etc. Heck, we snuck the tree in the house, and its artificial!!

It's Christmas and your house so you can setup what you want. Enjoy the holidays and setup as much as you want because they can't do a thing and that includes halloween.
They are your landlords and not your parents don't be ashamed and set it up as much as you like. Seeing this makes me made and also upset you let them walk over you during halloween... Guess what this is Canada and you can celebrate what you want , when you want and they can't do or say shit plain and simple!!!
Just because you rent someone you don't have to live by their rules... It's your home, you pay the bills and what they did is not right at all..Have fun enjoy the season like you should because its your right!!!
Who gives a fuck what they say.. Its everyones country and if they don't respect it they should get the fuck out or mind their on business... I fucken hate people like that so fucken much and I'm pissed the fuck off right now and feel bad and sorry for you that you feel that way. If you lived by me I would come over decorate your house and sing xmas music and snap if they said anything about it..
I keep on adding to this cause I'm straight up mad about it right now I fucken hate people like that fucken selfish fucken idiots!!!

the only things landlords can do is stop you from doing anything illegal and even then its a lengthy process
unless you guys made some sort of a written agreement previous to you renting then there is nothing they should even be able to confront you about.

How old are they fucken idiots? are they from Canada? do they do weird religious shit? like holy fuck you should know better then this and stick up for yourself and not back down and hide. They can't evict you for this and legally they can't even say that... Fuck fuck fuck.. What is this world coming to with fucken idiots thinking they can do/say that can bust up your xmas spirit that you guys should be excited about

don't let those fucken idiots get to you bro... Have fun and enjoy it the way you should. I take it you and your girl are super young and you should be excited to decorate and celebrate what the season is about... I'm happy you posted this and said something cause I would never want to hear someone feel the way you guys currently do cause you don't deserve that at all. no one does!!

Since you're renting a suite in their house, you can only go so far. If they ask you to not put up things on the outside of their house then you probably should abide by that. As far as the inside goes, go wild with decorations. They can't stop you from doing that..

Sure you can decorate the outside (if its not against your rental agreement) but expect an eviction notice

For something marginally religious? Sounds like a fun court case!

I wouldn't even call it marginally religious any more and even if it was its within your rights to express it the way you like.. Christmas is about spending time with family, friends and people you love and the giving.. Renting a play includes the other side as well especially with a separate entrance. Put a wreath on the door and enjoy the way you should. You have nothing to hide and be ashamed about at all.

Who's to say why they evict? They can just file the form to evict for personal use, tenants get 60days to clear out... or if they bide their time as long as the Tennant is 1 day late on paying their rent... bam 30day notice
Or they can argue that they're being disruptive to other tenants or the landlord
Its much too sloppy to mess with a landlord if you're not willing to be a complete ass either
what religion are they, out of interest
you can not be forced to remove decorations from the inside of your house, you have freedom of religion and expression within your 4 walls (unless they have some bat shit crazy clause in the tenancy agreement).
outside, well, personally i'd just respect their wishes bc i'm a nice person and want to keep the peace, but i'm not that big on xmas. but def. go to town indoors and don't worry about closing your curtains

My guess is Roman Catholic. My step mother converted to Catholicism when I was about 7 or 8 and I remember we weren't allowed to take part in Halloween that year. She created some sort of "Jesus Day" I think is what she called it so we still got candy but couldn't dress up or go outside.

He didn't really make that clear. All he said was they didn't appreciate the halloween stuff. Made it sound like they're afraid to find out if it's acceptable or not, not that they had said they don't celebrate christmas.

Just decorate inside. You rented the place you can do what you want. If they come and give you shit. Just tell them fuck off and tell them if they hate Xmas so much they should stay home and not go anywhere this month. Because there are Xmas tress and decorations in every single mall, there are Xmas tress being setup in stores and ppl dress as Santa taking pics with kids. Oh and tell them not to have turkey either and not watch TV because there are most likely going to be some movie about Xmas.
You rented the basement you have 100% as to how you to decorate it.

Fuck these clowns, I'd put up twice as much Christmas stuff now to make up for the removed Halloween decorations (Rona has a ton of stuff on clearance right now too). PM me if you need a hand and we can make that place visible from outer space.
If they somehow try to evict you for it I'd just leave, you don't need that kind of negativity in your life when you clearly love these holidays so much.
They are your landlords and not your parents don't be ashamed and set it up as much as you like.
I read the OP again and they aren't even the landlords, they're other tenants who happen to be the landlords kids. Which makes this even worse. It also doesn't mean the landlords share their kids beliefs, so they might just tell their kids to pond sand if they complain.

I'm with murd0c, I can't fucking stand people like that. We're in Canada, we like Christmas, it is very socially accepted in this country. The message is togetherness, family, loved ones, and spending time with them. It's one thing to not participate due to religion or beliefs, but it's another thing entirely to frown upon others for celebrating the holiday. You don't like it? Stay in your fucking house until January 2nd. Fuckers.

Hmm, maybe it was just the church we were part of then. They were VERY against any of the congregation participating in Halloween. This was in a small town though, so that's probably why.

Worst Apartment Rental Ad Ever ? Consumerist (http://consumerist.com/2009/01/14/worst-apartment-rental-ad-ever/)
Date: 2008-12-19, 6:05PM PST
I am a born again Christian. Why is this a problem for people????! I have a house that’s MINE and I PAID FOR IT. I also have a basement apartment for rent. It’s a great space [and] I’m charging very little for it, $480 monthly, for the right tenant. I know it’s ILLEGAL to require a Christian in the apartment, against the human rights. That’s why I NEVER put this in my ad. Why then does it keep getting taken down?
HERE IS THE AD I POSTED, AND THE AD THAT KEEPS GETTING REMOVED:
Available Immediately – Broadway and Commercial – Showing Saturday and Sunday – Email for directions and additional information.
What kind of apartment is it?
◾One bedroom basement apartment with separate entrance
◾Tastefully decorated with modern décor
◾Approximately 650 square feet
◾There is even a window! Security bars installed for your safety and to prevent unauthorized activity
◾Closed circuit camera installed for security and safety. One in your suite, one at the entrance, and one in the exercise yard
Rent:
◾$480.00 per month
◾First month’s rent + ˝ month security deposit due at move in
◾Small pet allowed with approval and payment of additional ˝ month pet damage deposit
◾One year lease permitted, option to renew lease at end of the term with no increase in rent
◾LANDLORD’S SPECIAL! Move in before January 1st and don’t pay for the remainder of December! That’s significant savings.
Included in the rent:
◾Electricity
◾Heat – Maintained at 21 degrees with lock box to prevent unauthorized tampering. Additional heating available for $20.00 per extra degree of heating per month. You may not use your oven to heat the apartment. If you do, you will be fined $50.00 per occurrence.
◾Air conditioning – Maintained at 25 degrees during the summer with lock box to prevent extra cooling from being dispensed. Additional cooling for sale for $20.00 per degree of cooling requested per month.
◾25″ Zenith color television set with basic cable service – INCLUDED IN RENT!
◾Wireless internet (with content filter applied to block forbidden/immoral websites) – INCLUDED IN RENT!
◾Provision of coin laundry services – You will have your own personal coin laundry washer and dryer machines. Washers and dryers are paid using a token system. Tokens can be purchased through the landlord. Washer tokens cost $4.15 each and dryer tokens cost $3.60 each. You are not allowed to use foreign currency or slugs in the washer and dryer. Violators will be fined $100.00 per infraction.
About us: (Landlords)
We are conservative, bible believing, God-fearing, born again, evangelical Christians. We interpret the bible literally in every way possible. We live a strict moral code and observe God’s laws in our everyday life. My wife stays at home and teaches our home-schooled children. I work as a pastor at a local congregation and am active in the faith community.
About you: (Tenant)
◾You are employed
◾You do not participate in lascivious deviant sexual behavior
◾You do not choose alternative lifestyles as your lifestyle
◾You do not have any criminal history
◾You must have excellent character references
◾You do not smoke, drink or take drugs. Mandatory drug screening required.
Additional Rules/Conditions:
CLEANLINESS: You are responsible for the cleanliness and orderliness of your apartment. Beds are to be made before leaving your suite, countertops must be wiped down, and you must remove all trash. Upon inspection, if the tenant’s basement suite is not clean, the cost of cleaning services plus a fine of $100.00 will be levied.
LIGHTS: The lights in your basement suite and in the day room are not to be tampered with. If a light needs repair, report the condition to the Landlord.

I got a question, and a quick browse through I didn't see anyone else ask.
Is this a legal basement suite?
Doesn't necessarily matter, but depending on the guys approach to the scenario, it could level the playing field a bit in your favor to go tell buddy to pound sand. Last thing he needs is the city up his ass about his illegal suite, he'll never rent it ever again after you leave the place.

Yes, they are Johovas Witnesses. Its quite ironic that you said that ^^ We got served a 2 month eviction notice this evening. I have asked 3 times (just to make sure) that our suit was legal. Turns out its not! City bylaw was here for a parking infraction because my driveway does not have a permit and towed my vehicle for being parked in a wrongful spot. (landlord built the driveway on a easement, and removed the citys boulevard) Long story short after arguing about wrongfull towing, he served my landlords with a notice to tear down the suit. Turns out a load bearing wall was removed without a permit, improper duct routing, furnace room is not up to fire code, windows too small to jump out of incase of fire, non of the wiring had a permit. etc, the list goes on. So... We've got 2 months to vacate.

It really is quite nice, honestly one of the nicest places i've rented in the past 6 years. Everything is new and updated (1970's house) Laminate dark hardwood floor, nicely updated kitchen, if anything breaks the landlords are there to fix it the next day. Its a piss off for sure, we've been here for 7 months and we're already packing.

building code is there for a reason, though. it may look nice superficially, but none of that matters if a slight tremor or earthquake makes the place collapse on you bc of the remove load bearing wall, or a fire kills you as you can't get out.
i imagine you've just saved yourself 2 months of rent, though, right? surely your lease agreement is void as its not a legal suite and your safety is questionable there. i know i wouldn't pay and would happily say so, calmly, and with reason, to the landlord.

I'm sorry to hear you have to vacate.
Onto the bright things:
-Decorate the fuck out of everything. If they want to stop you, tell them to fuck themselves because you're already out in 60 days.
-Atleast they get karma for being dicks, they're rental will be torn out, and if they want to rebuild, they are in for headaches as the city now knows that they tried to have an illegal suite. Inspectors will probably give them a hard time for trying to cheat out the system.
Good and bad to take from this. I'd stick to the good.

Its a 2month notice to vacate. We need to pay next months rent, but the month after is free, or we can leave 1 month early and they pay us 1 month rent out of their own pocket.
Thanks for the input guys. I suppose its good to get out of this place, but we are already having a tough time making ends meet, and we've got a small dog which will make finding a new place impossible. We're just pissed that we have to move on no reason of our own. Yay for good christmas news!
edit: I jokingly told the girlfriend that we can move out 1 month early, take the cash and move into our 27ft 5th wheel in the walmart parking lot :o BUHAHAHAHA Just about got my ass kicked for thinking that.
