I can't find another thread on this. If there is please delete this one. Today they announced the movie the Interview has been officially canned amongst threats to blow up theaters which showed the movie.
Another huge leak is suppose to happen as well on December 25th.
Thoughts?

Well it would be the same if lets say North Korea made a movie about going to the White House on a tour and than killing the President. The movie is pretty much shitting on North Korea and their leader. We can think of North Korea however we want but people living their think hes the next coming of Jesus

That's because they've been brainwashed to think so and if they think any different, they'll disappear.
This is a real damn shame, god knows how much anti-american shit they force on the people of North Korea that we don't know about.
Kim-Jong Il never had a problem with Team America, to this extent, at least.
Unfortunately this makes him look really good to his people now. "Wow, our leader has the power to control the Americans."
This was bound to happen, as soon as they started with the bomb threats. Just like at a sporting event scheduled in an arena set to be full of people, if someone calls in a threat, they have no choice but to postpone or cancel.
This is a pretty big embarrassment for Sony, and a big financial loss. It's a shame he got away with this.
EDIT: That being said, I'm pretty sure the movie is awful. Seth Rogen films are pretty painful to watch.

I thought the same thing! they're playing right into their hand and showing that violent threats will get you exactly want you want. but at the same time... maybe just to meet their simple "demands" it will save some lives. I just think the whole thing is obsurd. to be that upset over a dumb movie that won't impact anything or anyone. the target audience is a bunch of stoners... who even cares.

they (the hackers) probably have a lot of sensitive information that would make all the high level execs look REALLY bad.
they're not saving people...
they're saving their own asses from looking like whatever outrageous things they've said in private emails and pictures... the public would probably crucify them for being "racist/misogynist/hater/etc..."... stock tank.
its purely self interest. the shame they'll receive from their own people, will be worse than making any amount of money from that movie.

Sony Has ?No Further Release Plans? for ?The Interview? | Variety (http://variety.com/2014/film/news/sony-has-no-further-release-plans-for-the-interview-1201382167/)
Sony Pictures Entertainment has chosen to stand down for “The Interview,” deciding against releasing the Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy in any form — including VOD or DVD, as U.S. officials reportedly link Sony’s massive cyber attack to North Korea.
Source tells @NBCNews that a New Regency/Fox film about N. Korea, titled “Pyongyang" & starring Steve Carell, has been shut down.

It's not all Sony, though... most of the major theater chains decided not to play it anyway, so Sony would be releasing it to a handful of screens.

Some chains wouldn't show it due to the threats, but Sony later pulled it completely. Theatres can't show it even if they want to. And regarding North Korea being behind it:
U.S. is set to blame North Korea for the Sony hack - Dec. 17, 2014 (http://money.cnn.com/2014/12/17/media/the-interview-sony-theater-owners/index.html)

As a result of our investigation, and in close collaboration with other U.S. government departments and agencies, the FBI now has enough information to conclude that the North Korean government is responsible for these actions.

Their evidence to prove that North Korea was behind the recent hacking was due to a few line of codes used in past hacking attempts from NK.
Seriously?
These vulnerability and exploits are widely available and shared among the hacking community online. Just because you use a certain exploit, it does not mean it's from NK. Lol!

Questioning the official statement is literally a conspiracy theory. I think the problem is that too many people automatically think that is a negative term. If you have a theory that there is a conspiracy, feel free to talk about it openly if you want. Better than hinting that you know something other people don't...
Also as long as it's on topic, there's nothing wrong with discussing it. CiC's problem was that he derailed every single thread with bullshit. In this case, the topic is actually the NK/Sony/FBI issue. You're absolutely allowed to talk about it.

^ Probably a massive publicity stunt. Gotta give them props... TBH I wasn't planning on watching The Interview through legal means but now I kinda want to go see it in the theatres this weekend. And I'm sure a lot of people who didn't even know about the film is now aware and may watch it.
IMO it was too good to be true, Sony had already finished the film and spent a ton of money on it. Didn't make sense to just scrap it a week before release with the full knowledge that it would get leaked on torrent sites and they wouldn't make a single cent on it.

North Korean cybervandalism or extreme viral marketing ploy, it doesn't really matter to me. I had no plans to see this movie (even though I'm a Seth Rogan and James Franco fan), and I still don't. I think it's tasteless to create a mainstream film about assassinating political figures who are still alive. If this was an indie production, then sure... it's then an art film more than anything (don't ask me why, it's what all the film buffs would see it as), but as a major production with the backing of a major studio... no.
Either way, still looks like a shitty movie that I wouldn't even bother torrenting or even watching on Netflix for free.

lets just think about it...
Sony invests say a couple mil into a movie that they know will have some bad press, but they decide to shoot the movie anyways. The movie wraps up and turns out to be a shit movie in the eyes of the movie critics and die hard movie people (I for one like dumb movies, so I would've paid $12 to see this, many would not have). Sony dumps in more money to hype up the movie and catches the attention of DPRK. DPRK hacks sony (depends who you talk to apparently, but lets go with it). Supposedly the theaters get a whiff of this news and refuse to play it. The American gov't get involved, the President and Sony President have some words and low and behold Sony releases it on Online for $6. The key is they released it at 1/2 off the theater price (lets assume it's $12 everywhere - I don't know what the US price is).
What they effectively did was hype up, increase the hype x2, potentially double the eyeballs (think, average family of 5-6 people watching together with family on Christmas day vs. a couple watching it in theaters) and flood the market for 50% off.
This is no different than Manchu Wok handing out samples 30mins before closing and selling 2 item combo for $2 when retail is $4.
In the entertainment business, any publicity is good publicity. The more eyeballs you can get, the better it is. Just ask Mr. Murdoch.

Either their servers were overloaded or my Internet just sucks and I wasn't offered the option because my bandwidth/speeds are shit. Was talking to a friend about this whole thing earlier today and an interesting point was brought up. With Sony using this as an excuse to release the film online on opening day, it's a good trial to see the viability of future movies being released both online and in theatres. Sure, people will still go to the theatre to experience the full, er, experience, but others will be just as happy to pay the price of a ticket to watch it in the comfort in their own home. Drop the price a couple dollars and film distributors suddenly have another source to tap into. True, this isn't something I'd expect to see start happening anytime soon, but it's certainly a good platform test.
As for the viral marketing angle, I honestly don't think it is one. It's possible that Sony decided to spin the hacking into something profitable, but it's extremely doubtful it was orchestrated by one of their marketing teams. Why? Because for most major theatre chains to pull a film is not just bad publicity on their behalf, it's also bad for profits. The amount of publicity that the film has received up to the point of that information being relayed to the public would have more than made up for any low seat viewings. Realistically, if a film house feels that one of their movies is going to be a bomb, they usually release it as a limited run in select theatres. After testing the waters, they'll then decide on whether to do a full release or simply pull it and send it off to VOD/print/etc. To coerce or plan with theatre chains to publicly state that they're pulling out of showing a film (and losing any potential profits) is something that I can't imagine even the most ravenous marketing team capable of pulling off..

It's available on BT now.
Movie was pretty awful. I'm usually a Seth Rogen and James Franco fan, but the plot and acting was weak, and felt their spotlight was overtaken by the supporting casts (Sook and Kim Jong Un).
As of now, the rating on Rotten Tomato is 58%, but 97% on IMDB. WTF? Lol
This movie is definitely not up to Seth Rogen standards.

4/10 - it wasn't really awful,Just mediocre...watched the red band trailer on YouTube and they showed some of the funny parts already so i was expecting it.
lot of hype into this movie for nothing it seems,i think Seth Rogen is turning into a shitty actor now that his comedy is getting wore out by crap movies.

There are people who think this was intentional? :seriously:
Anyway, if you want to see a documentary of people who were allowed into North Korea and told more than they were supposed to, there's the Vice film when Dennis Rodman first went there. You can tell that this movie was inspired by it (but the documentary is actually much funnier, despite not even being a comedy)

The best parts of the movie were probably in the first 10 minutes.
Everything else was pretty stupid, but it still had some funny parts throughout the movie.
The other good thing about this movie is you get to see a lot of BC, since it seems to be mostly filmed in BC. This adds to the entertainment value as you get to figure out where each part is filmed. (I'm pretty sure North Korea has completely different trees.)
I do also remember driving around last year and seeing a bunch of military style vehicles with Korean letters all over in trailers! I was wondering what they were for. Now I have my answer.

Overall, the movie itself was not very impressive at all. It was pretty bold, yet bland, but had a couple of good laughs though.
Considering I didn't pay a single cent to watch it in high definition even though I was originally highly likely to go see it in the cinemas, I can't say I can complain!

I didn't have high expectations at all, I think Seth Rogen movies blow. But I've actually seen this twice now (once on my own, and once stuck with friends) and I have to say it's not as bad as I thought it would be. Definitely ridiculous and awful at times, but not horrendous.
And also cool to see local actor friends. The "Sook" character who hooks up with Rogen is local, and has no accent whatsoever; she had to put it on for the film. :notbad:

Watched it last night, HD version. Had a few good laughs, lots of stupid awkward parts and you can obviously see why NK didn't want it released it makes Kim look like a complete clown. All in all though it was a pretty typical Seth rogen comedy.
Wonder where the parts with the tank and missiles were filmed, it looks like either out in Chiliwack somewhere or like pit lake/pit river

I'm glad I didn't pay for it, and glad that I only had to waste my time in the ferry line and during the sailing to watch it.
