What a race!!!

It's funny - I am a huge F1 fan as well but MotoGP helps illustrate EVERYTHING that is wrong with Formula 1... there is actual competition amongst the top 5-6 teams.. there is MUCH greater parity, which means better competition, which means more exciting racing... so much overtaking... so much action...

At first I thought the Qatar race just seemed great because the first two F1 races were horrendous but watching it again I realized it was actually a tremendous race.

Kudus to MM for storming back up the field after that tough first corner.

Congrats to 36 year old Rossi!!!

unbelievable power on the ducatis, soft tyres killed them on the long run tho also great effort from marquez getting back..great race nonetheless

they actually used the medium compound rear tire like everyone else during the race. their only real advantage is getting to run the extra soft tire during qualifying. they've been running 22L of fuel on most of the tracks as well so the 24L allocation for the open class is also useless for ducati.

ducati's speed this year is mainly attributed to their ability to make the bike steer better and hold higher cornering speeds. previous iterations of the desmosedici would understeer and were physically demanding on both the rider and the tires because you'd have to basically thrash the bike into the corners to make it turn. aside from when casey stoner is at the helm, the ducati would get demolished in qualifying at tracks like phillip island, sometimes by up to 2 seconds, because it can't hold its line while going through long corners.

i cant wait to see how the rest of this season will turn out. im hoping crutchlow will find his groove and start fighting at the top again, his lap times have been very promising to say the least.

I don't go out of my way to watch motoGP but I happened to be flicking channels after finishing F1 and caught the last 5 laps of Qatar. That was a master class from VR....the quality of racing in general with those two trading spots had me on edge. Rossi planning ahead of time in order to create enough space for the straight against the more powerful Ducati...the man is such a tactician.

Yamaha wants Rossi and Lorenzo to race Suzuka 8 Hours | Sport Rider (http://www.sportrider.com/yamaha-wants-rossi-and-or-lorenzo-to-race-suzuka-8-hours)

"The physical toll it inflicts on each rider lasts for days. Rossi reportedly told Edwards that he wanted to come back and win the 2001 event (after crashing while leading the 2000 race and costing the team a chance at victory) so that he wouldn’t be obliged to race in the event ever again—and he (as well as most other Grand Prix riders) now avoid the race like the plague."

Podium

1 - Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team)
2 - Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team)
3 - Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP)

The battle today was really for second ... once Marquez seized the lead nobody else stood a chance.

Notes :

*Ducati Team is looking better by the day ... another podium, another great team performance.
*Rossi still on top of the points standings - I was hoping desperately that he would pull a second place finish but I think he'll be happy with another podium finish regardless
*those 2500 frame-per-second cameras are astonishing

Both races have been pretty good so far the Ducati/Yamaha back and forth makes the races a lot more fun to watch, it will be interesting to see if they can reel in MM next week and make it a 3 way race.
Also was surprised both Ducati’s ran out of gas at the end of the race.

Ducati fuel allowance reduced after Qatar podiums (http://www.motogp.com/en/news/2015/03/31/ducati-fuel-allowance-reduced-after-qatar-podiums/173050)

After the podium(s) in Qatar, Ducati had it's fuel allowance reduced from 24 to 22 litres ... that's a HUGE difference and something difficult to overcome when you are battling for a top five position... It certainly evens the playing field though!

This Marquez domination is pretty boring. I don't mind if he 3peats, but being that much ahead of the pack makes for some pretty boring TV.

Good for Honda on paper, but the ones to watch and be really interested on are the Yamahas and Ducs this year. Another Marquez win just seems par for the course.

BEST RACE I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!!

-Rossi is a SURGEON!!!!! He started in such a bad position and just stormed up the field! He is the best rider on the planet... 36 years old or not.... this was a special performance and something MotoGP fans shouldn't forget for a very long time!!!

-when Marquez stormed out to that 4 second lead I was upset... I don't like to see domination like that I prefer to see a good battle. That said - if Repsol is just the dominate team than you shouldn't blame them for that or punish them because ultimately it's the responsibility of the other teams to be more competitive....

-ROSSI!!!

-tire decision ultimately played a HUGE role in the outcome of this race

-another great Ducati performance!!!

What are your thoughts on Marquez going down?

The only logical reason I can think of for changing to the hard compound right before race time is that they expected the tarmac temperature to stay cooler than it did before the sun came out. They took a huge gamble and it backfired on them. . .like every other time. Huge respect for Rossi though.

What a race!!!

A couple of thoughts;

-once again, Rossi starts from far back and has to battle all the way through the field to land on the podium. Even my GF made note of this fact while watching today! Regardless - it makes for compelling viewing.

-91,000+ spectators!!! This reinforces why MotoGP events should be held in the heartland of the sport. The atmosphere seemed amazing especially when the fans swarmed the track after the race. Rossi is clearly a national hero.

-Lorenzo - dominated.

-Marquez - he ran wide on a couple of corners and hasn't been a serious threat for much of the year when all is said and done at the end of race weekend.... But I was thinking "you can't call this a nightmare season for him... he's still challenging each race and has only crashed out once..." and then seconds later he crashed!
https://twitter.com/crash_motogp/status/604989410380234754/photo/1

-Crutchlow - the announcers indicated that both he and Marquez went for the harder compound front tires and both seems to lose their front end with just laps to go. Coincidence?

-Yamaha dominance this year

Entertaining race this week!

Once again ... Rossi has to battle his way through the field to secure a podium finish. You just can't help but wonder how he would look this year if he didn't have to exhaust so much energy just to fight his way into contention.

That says ... he has been clinical in his approach to methodically battling his way into contention every single race.

Also - Marquez CRASHES OUT AGAIN.... is it time for Honda to panic? Is their season done? Are there enough races left for Marquez to make up some points to three-peat???

It was cool to see Suzuki take the pole position. Probably a highlight of their first season back in MotoGP, even if the moment didn't last but mere seconds it seemed.

Finally - what an unbelievable crowd. Italy and Spain are very much the heartland of this sport.

If the comfortable 2014 chassis helps great ... I think some of Marquez's crashes were rider error this year ... but if a more comfortable chassis that he is more confident on helps than awesome ... will be great to see another contender this year....

Wow - what a track! First time I have watched an event from Germany.

Thoughts :

-incredibly short, small, tight track... very technical (but lots of runoff) at Sachsenring.
-7 left hand turns ... almost entirely left hand turns!!!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sachsenring
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/73/Sachsenring_%28Schaltung%29.svg/800px-Sachsenring_%28Schaltung%29.svg.png
-lots of discussion on BT Sport before the race about the special tires constructed for this event that had softer right shoulders to compensate for the fact that due to the lack of right turns the right side of the tires get very cold and tend to wash out when they do get used...
-Marquez's Honda looks great - on the surface, reverting to the 2014 chassis might have been the best thing that they could have done! Commentator's caution though that this track has always suited the Honda and not to read too much into Marquez's dominant performance....
-92k in attendance ... another huge crowd
-Honda 1-2 finish
-Rossi finishes third and increases his lead on Lorenzo, who finished fourth

Sunfighter

Well ... Rossi wasn't able to convert that great qualifying position into a win. He had a tough start and had to battle to put himself into a position that would enable him to chase Marquez and Lorenzo but by the time he got himself into third position he was already 5 seconds behind Marquez. The event lacked a ton of drama and not surprisingly it finished Lorenzo, Marquez and Rossi....

Rossi : "If I'm going to win the championship ... I'v got to win races..."

With Marquez looking like Marquez since switching back to the 2014 chassis and with Lorenzo looking dominant, it looks more and more like the championship is slipping away from Rossi.

Experience completely reigned supreme today at the British GP. With rains lashing the track, Rossi quickly moved to the front while the competitors behind him crashed and slid all over the slippery track.

Perhaps most shocking of all was Marc Marquez's crash - an unforced error while in second place that resulted in a high-side. This crash was not unlike what we had seen from the two-time champion through much of the season's first half.

WHAT A RACE ...

I'm a HUGE Formula 1 fan and have watched every race for more than 20 years ... I started following MotoGP in 2013 and wow.... the drama, excitement, etc., relative to F1 is simply crazy!!! Faster and Fastest helped immerse me in the sport early on.

As for yesterday's race... good gracious.

Dry - RAIN - Dry ... drama!!!!

-I got the sense that Rossi was racing to beat Lorenzo more than he was to win the race itself. When the two were the last on rain tyres you could literally see them shredding apart. I kept thinking ... Rossi is playing chicken with Lorenzo and somebody's tire is going to completely come apart.

-I'm so used to F1 I kept screaming out loud : "BOX, BOX, BOX, BOX, BOX, BOX, BOX!!!!!!" Lewis Hamilton style. =)

-I yelled and screamed a lot during this race ... especially when the riders first started pitting for their rain tyres. So much excitement and chaos.

-Rossi's biggest mistake was staying out one lap two long. He got VERY lucky that Lorenzo failed to finish the race.

-Cannot believe that somebody that crashed made the podium. If EVER there is an example of why you DON'T GIVE up no matter what's that!!! Kudos to Scott Redding for not quitting on the race or his team and sponsors. It was hilarious when he was in the fourth and the announcers were basically, "didn't ... didn't he crash earlier in the race??!?!?"

I'm sorely disappointed in Rossi's results but at the same time, I really don't know what to make of it. He only grabbed a measly 11 points from Lorenzo's DNF, but you can tell after Marquez's DNF last race that Rossi only cares about beating Lorenzo now.

However, the thing that's dangerous about Lorenzo despite Rossi's 26 point lead is when Lorenzo wins, he wins in streaks and those races don't even come close for this season. So when Lorenzo goes hot, that 26 point lead is almost no buffer at all.

Whether or not focusing only on Lorenzo from this point out, and losing important points to the satellites like in Misano will help more than it hurts, I guess we all have to wait to the last race to find out. But I suppose you don't win 7 GP titles without knowing what you're doing. :lol

Goodness, you're absolutely right about the drama and excitement part the way this season is unfolding. These last handful of races can't come any sooner.

I completely agree with you. I feel the same way about Rossi. I want desperately for him to win but for the past 4 -5 races I have felt little confidence that he would be able to hang out as Lorenzo just surges and surges and surges behind him in the points standings.

The Misano race may haunt Rossi ... Lorenzo crashes out and due to bad strategy he finished fifth. Unless Rossi qualifies ahead of Lorenzo in any of the remaining races I don't see him taking any additional podiums.

I also completely agree with you about Marquez. I love his humility and I hope his legacy remains strong. He is young and should contend for many more years.

The only knock i've ever had against Lorenzo though is when he gets over taken from the lead he tends to have the wind taken out of his sail completely. Almost like he doesn't care to put in any more effort to fight back for position again. Other than that love watching the Yamaha tandem.

About the circuit

Phillip Island, the self-styled home of Australian motorsport, is steeped in motor racing tradition, with the first car races having been held there on public roads in the 1920s. The first motorcycle races took place in 1931 and a permanent track was built in 1956. The circuit fell into disrepair during the late 70s and early 80s until it was bought in 1985 and given a AUS $5m facelift. MotoGP returned in 1989 and 1990 before becoming a regular fixture once more from 1997 onwards.

The Phillip Island circuit is blessed with breathtaking scenery and beautiful ocean views and, as one of the fastest, most fluid, tracks on the calendar, it continues to provide some of the most spectacular racing in the MotoGP season.

Heart-pounding action for the ENTIRE RACE.... I'm simply floored by how entertaining that race was!!

A track like this completely reinforces the difference in top-end power between the Ducatis, Hondas and Yamaha bikes.

Marquez winning in the last lap was HUGELY beneficial to Rossi's title hopes. Marquez stripped valuable points away from Lorenzo.

“It's a great shame. I'm not happy. Especially not to be on the podium because this was a great race: From beginning to end a very, very hard rhythm, a lot of overtaking, a lot of different riders. It was a real 'Phillip Island old style' race,” said Rossi, speaking in the paddock on Sunday evening.

“It was a shame also to unfortunately lose seven points on Jorge, especially because my speed was very, very good today in the race and I can also arrive in front.

I have a big issue with how marquez slowed down to let Lorenzo pass... other than that another big problem I have is how Marquez dives Rossi and trying to pass him like 4-5 times in that span it looked ruthless, looked like Marquez deadly wants to make Rossi crash as he had nothing to lose.

Finally the kick, after watching a few videos it looked like that marquez's helmet touched Rossi's leg at the end and he just flinched.

I'm extremely conflicted about this... it was such a strange day of racing.

-Horrible, messy Formula 1 race in Austin. I'm a HUGE Hamilton fan but seeing the championship decided with THREE more races remaining is atrocious for the sport.
-seeing Hamilton drive Rosberg right off the track in turn one was terrible.
-my GF was filled with glee all day with the Hamilton win though, which is good!

As for the MotoGP race....

-epic dual to start the race and then BAM ... it was done... like the announcers said, Pedrosa's win was completely overshadowed by Marquez's crash.
-I'm not sure if what Rossi did was flagrant... when Marquez dipped his bike and made contact with Rossi I'm not sure if it was because he wanted to draw some contact, push Rossi to speed up and make the turn or if he did it because he was anticipating that Rossi was going to turn and Rossi intentionally went wide...
-I don't blame Rossi's reaction ... it's the circumstances that led to that that have me baffled....

Noir - I completely agree... the strategy of Silverstone dictated the outcome of the championship...

Was wondering about it, since carbon ceramic brakes love heat and need to be hot to really perform. Was wondering if a bike would be able to push it enough. But clearly so!

Haven't been following MotoGP all that closely this year.
What happened in Silverstone for you to say this?

Rossi was doing great all season so far. He doesn't win as much as Lorenzo, not even anywhere near close to Marquez's level last year, but he always put in good and consistent efforts race-in-race-out and always finishes in the podium. He lead MotoGP by consistency of good effort and results not neccesarily by domination like when Lorenzo or Marquez would.

Silverstone is when the turning point when Rossi changed his game. Instead of playing the races straight up, he starts playing these extra games (Extra games against Lorenzo [Silverstone] & Marquez [Malaysia]) which ultimately both have cost him the Championship.

By extra games (in Silverstone), it's when he played Chicken with Lorenzo with the wet tires. When the circuit dried up, the key part of the race was choosing the how soon or how late the racers would switch from their wet bikes to their dry bikes. Lorenzo & Rossi stayed the latest with Rossi ultimately being last. Lucky for him, Lorenzo crashed out of the race because Rossi was losing 10 seconds per lap with the game he was playing with Lorenzo; and it was the first race of the season he finished out of the podium. Sure he beat Lorenzo when he crashed out, but by finishing 5th he only got 10 points out of it when he may have possibly gotten a full 25 or at least 20.

Honestly, if Rossi just kept it steady and raced Silverstone and even Malaysia just straight up, he would still be fighting for a Championship rather than having it gifted to Lorenzo by Marquez which is pretty lame for how this season has already concluded.

He may lead by 7 points but you're hoping for a Lorenzo crash out; an event that unless Rossi purposely torpedoes Lorenzo himself next race, he has absolutely no control over it. And even if he were to torpedo Lorenzo, he'd have to catch him from the back of the grid.

There are no rules that governs against Rossi running Marquez wide, although there are no rules against Marquez diving Rossi non stop, there is an issue behind it is that, this is not Marquez's fight, he has no chance of winning the championship and he is sabotaging someone elses because he is a little kid and a crying one.

I stated that I am having a heart attack watching right now because of what had happened, Marquez ate shit after trying to cause someone else a championship he deserved it. Him eating shit was not my problem and I did not expect it all that Rossi would get a penalty because at the end of the day Marquez made initial contact making him the protagonist in this fight.

It all come down to this, would Marquez have crashed if he didn't make initial contact? From the many videos and gifs I have came across at every possible angle, the answer is no.

I think David Emmett sums up everything about what happened best in this article, https://motomatters.com/analysis/2015/10/27/2015_sepang_motogp_round_up_heroes_who_h.html
60 years later, I think people are still going to disagree on what they saw.
But for now, we know that

-Lin Jarvis can't defend Rossi. #SepangClash: Jarvis reacts (http://www.motogp.com/en/news/2015/10/26/sepangclash-jarvis-reacts/188527)

-Jeremy Burgess can't defend Rossi. Soup :: Burgess: Not The Valentino Rossi I know :: 10-27-2015 (http://www.superbikeplanet.com/2015/Oct/151027burgessonrossi.htm)

-Most other riders seem to believe that they both share part of the fault. Rossi/Marquez clash: Reaction from riders on social media (http://www.motorsport.com/motogp/news/rossi-marquez-clash-reaction-from-riders-on-social-media/)

So at the end of the day, why do people believe to have some kind of expert insight over the people who have been in the MotoGP paddock for years and have dedicated their life to the highest pinnacle of motorcycle racing and see this kind of ruthlessness regularly every race weekend? Would they not have the better perspective to judge an incident such as this, without having to resort to a streamable video online? Although I have my own opinions about the penalty, I respect the conclusion that Race Direction has come to.

I agree - I did initially feel like the crash was caused by Marquez being forced to guess when Rossi was going to turn. He guessed wrong and plowed into the side of Rossi.

I, like millions of others, wanted desperately to see an aging Rossi win one last championship. http://cdn.images.autosport.com/editorial/1445948050.jpg

The entire 2015 MotoGP field has been summoned to an extraordinary meeting with series chiefs at Valencia amid the controversy over Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez's Sepang clash.

With tensions between Honda and Yamaha still high, and fans and the paddock polarised, all riders and team managers will meet with Carmelo Ezpeleta, chief executive of MotoGP commercial body Dorna Sports, and FIM president Vito Ippolito on Thursday afternoon.

An FIM statement said the gathering had been called "following the events that occurred at the Malaysian Grand Prix and further developments over the following week and given the exceptional circumstances."

The traditional pre-race press conference that takes place at every grand prix has been cancelled for Valencia.

Last week Ippolito issued an opening letter in which he called on the factions involved in the row to stop 'poisoning' MotoGP and causing 'anarchy'.

Rossi and Marquez's Sepang collision was the culmination of growing bitterness following previous incidents between the pair this season, and amid the Italian's accusations that Marquez was actively trying to hamper his championship bid in the preceding race at Phillip Island.

Race direction gave Rossi three penalty points on his licence for taking Marquez out in Malaysia, triggering a back of the grid start for the Valencia title decider, which Rossi goes into with a seven-point lead over Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo.

It seems to me that a lever guard would provide the most protection to forces that lie in the same plane as the lever. Hypothetically, if a bike was leaned over, it would still be exposed to forces coming from above.

Argh, I was really really frustrated the whole race to be honest.

I don't have an issue with Lorenzo winning if it was a fair race and Rossi was able to give it all he got.

But the race was dictated right from the start as Lorenzo rides his pole and just calmly rode the laps till the end.

The biggest problem was that Marquez did not even bother passing Lorenzo and just rode with him along the way.

By doing that Rossi had NO chance right from the start of the race as Marquez was basically Lorenzo's insurance. Really shitty way to end such an amazing season.......

How can I enjoy a sport where the contenders of the championship could not even contend for the win?

Hi everybody - I apologize for not rushing in here to make the final update on the season.

For context - I am a HUGE sports fan. I have been watching F1 for over 25 years, I am a huge baseball fan, a basketball fan and a big soccer fan. I started watching MotoGP in 2013 and was hooked immediately. The Faster/Fastest documentaries provided a ton of terrific context for the contemporary era and I watched every race in 2014 and 2015 on the edge of my seat.

The 2015 season was unbelievable for so many reasons ... until the "incident." Never have I witnessed such a fantastic season of sport so quickly and unnecessarily derailed as was this one.

I'm disappointed because I was one of the many that was hoping and cheering for the 36 year old Rossi to win ... that's the narrative that had me hooked! The aging Rossi running past a field of younger more agile racers that grew up emulating him.

However - as the season progressed, Lorenzo creeped closer and closer in the points race and I felt that Rossi, using his elevated platform as the MotoGP media darling, began pressing his own (possibly paranoid) agenda that the elite (Spanish) riders had constructed a plan to block Rossi from the championship. People can breakdown footage and review race analytics until the end of time and will be able to find "evidence" that supports their own theory that this did or did not happen. Regardless - Lorenzo won the title. If MotoGP was "rigged" would it not have been "rigged" in such a way as to deliver a championship to the most popular riding in the history of the sport rather than taking it away from him?

Again - I wanted Rossi to win the title desperately. I liked the narrative of the 36 year old winning ... it was like a movie that we got to watch throughout the entire year. But unfortunately we lost our "reward" which was to see him win the title. That's fine - it's sport. But it's the circumstances around this that bother me ... the media jabs, the in-fighting (within Yamaha, amongst the riders), and the fact that Rossi continued to use the media to drive an agenda that was ultimately damaging to the credibility of the sport itself.

It's a shame because Rossi had a terrific season and his performance in the final race was nothing less than epic. It's a shame that all of this will be overshadowed because of the "incident" and the media confrontations that proceeded and followed it.

I'm just very disappointed in the outcome. Partly because Rossi didn't win but also because of the circumstances.

I'll add as well that I still don't believe Rossi kicked Marquez. I also don't think Marquez "head-butted" Rossi. I believe that Marquez was anticipating that Rossi was going to dive in and begin making the corner. When Rossi didn't do this Marquez simply made contact and went down. End of story.

i dont want to take away from lorenzo as he is clearly a great rider. but i did not like how the ONLY pass attempt that i saw was by pedrosa on the second last lap i believe. are you kidding me? from my armchair watching it, definitely felt like no effort was made to come first by MM and also pedrosa (possibly giving MM the chance to pass lorenzo first)

edit: arent lorenzo and rossi "team mates"??? why does it seem like theres beef between the two

There is significant beef between the two. Has been documented for many years. It's also widely believed that's why Rossi departed Yamaha for Ducati a number of years ago.

Beef between teammates in motor sports isn't unusual - look at Nico in Lewis with Mercedes.

Nico and Lewis is the most epic thing to watch, EVER.

Nico throwing that hat @ Lewis was icing on the cake this year.
