AKARTA, Indonesia – An AirAsia plane with 162 people aboard lost contact with ground control on Sunday after takeoff from Indonesia on the way to Singapore, and search and rescue operations were underway.
The plane lost communication with Jakarta’s air traffic control at 7:24 a.m., about an hour before it was scheduled to land in Singapore, the Singapore Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement. The contact was lost about 42 minutes after takeoff from Indonesia’s Surabaya airport, Hadi Mustofa, an official of the transportation ministry told Indonesia’s MetroTV.
AirAsia said in a statement that the plane was an Airbus A320-200 and that search and rescue operations were in progress.
Mustofa said the plane had seven crew and 155 passengers, and lost contact when it was believed to be over the Java Sea between Kalimantan and Java islands.
The Singapore aviation authority said it was informed about the missing plane by Jakarta ground control about half an hour after the contact was lost.
“Search and rescue operations have been activated by the Indonesian authorities,” it said, adding that the Singapore air force and the navy also were activated with two C-130 planes.

i hope 2014 was just an anomaly for aviation incidents and will not be the norm going forward.
i wonder if we'll ever find out what really happened to MH370

I still don't understand the movie, I thought matthew mcconaughey lives in the end?
Probably fishing for fails now. Didn't mean disrespect, hope the plane gets found with those aboard safe and sound...

Yes because a science fiction movie about travel between timespace is relatable to an actual airplane going missing, for the xth time time this year...
Fail removed since you said you didn't mean disrespect, but it was still in pretty poor taste imo

Just walked by an AirAsia crew in my layover hotel. Not looking happy would be an understatement. I've been in their situation and it's a pretty sick feeling. Wishing for the best, also wish I had spoken up and given them a few wishful words.

When it rains it pours.
It's just going to happen more and more. As air travel grows, aircraft technology requires less and less experienced crews on a day to day basis. That is, until something goes wrong... You can feel safe in Canada as every airline in the country has fairly experienced (in the grand scheme of things) crews who have flown more then just a simulator in the past.

not at all....every single air asia flight i've been on was a newish plane (6-8 years max)
they have something like 180 aircraft with 200 more on order

These pilots were experienced, something like left seat had 6000 and right seat had 2500hrs. Supposedly they asked for a clearance to get a higher alt but separation minimas kept them low. This is what my dad told me and I actually haven't read fuck all on the accident.

Yes, the pilot asked 2x to fly at a higher altitude, but his request was denied because of other aircraft in the area.

Sorry simple answer is if your flying into a dangerous situation, you change your routing, even if your not cleared. That isn't exactly a highly experienced crew but certainly not the worst. The captain was a military guy, so they are generally a little lower time then their civilian counterparts.

You really don't know what you're talking about. Singapore's Changi airport is probably the most advanced in the world. Air Asia hasn't had a single noticeable incident or fatality till now for it's entire history and it flies to more places than Westjet.
All of you armchair pilots need to shut your mouth and wait for the investigation to come to it's conclusion before you continue shooting it off.
