Didn't have my cell phone on me but the meter ate my money and now I got a ticket. Isn't it the responsibility of the city to make sure their meters work before they fine you? Anyone disputed this and won?

If the meter ate your money, you're supposed to let the city know asap on the number posted on the meter. They'll credit you the money back but you cannot park at the broken meter.

Wait, what? So you're saying you dropped a few coins in there, saw the meter not functioning, and proceeded to leave with your car parked there? What were you expecting?

Yah sorry man is standard practice that you can't park at broken meters

yeah, basically what everybody said.

Couple of my buddies did that and ended up getting a ticket as well and when they tried to dispute it, the city basically told them that if you see that the meter is broken then you do not park there.

You can if you pay by phone. Seriously, download Pay By Phone app, its makes parking at meters SIGNIFICANTLY easier without fussing for change. You WILL thank me later.

As Per the City of Vancouver:

Do not park at a broken parking meter to avoid a ticket.

To report a broken meter, phone 3-1-1 and:

- Provide the six digit meter number located on the side of the meter

- Request a refund for any money you put into the broken meter

what city was this in?

If you can't pay or the machine is broken then you can't park there. If there is no way to provide proof of payment then you have to find somewhere else to park.

Common sense would have dictated moving your vehicle immediately to avoid any hassle of trying to dispute.

it is quite evident that common sense is not a strong point for this one!

well technically, if you have a cell phone to call 311, then you can use their app to park and pay with credit card. So it may be broken to take coins, but not credit card.

I'm pretty sure I saw a sign on the meters or somewhere saying that its illegal to park in front of broken meters. Once you realized this you should move your car and then inform the city of the faulty meter. Best way to avoid all this is Pay-By-Phone.

One of the meter maids downtown hates me from like 5 years ago when I put change into a car he was about to give a ticket to! Every time I see the guy he gives me the dirtiest look! Haven't seen him in awhile.

Yeah, pretty sure most meters have something to this effect on them.
