Recently started to get into Board Games, anyone else???

Ok, this all started over Christmas as we had many family dinners. My cousin who is a huge board game freak brought over a bunch of board games for all the cousins to play. Simply put, I had an amazing time.
I'm pretty competitive and played a lot of sports growing up, so I think this really sparked something in me. I got super pumped and excited and just wanted to keep playing.
Anyway, I went to my group of friends and proposed a games night just to test the waters and BAMN! What a hit. We all had a great time and it was definitely something different than going to get bubble tea, timmies, or getting drinks.
I honestly never thought I would get into board games. To be honest, I thought they were boring or "dorky". Boy, was I presumptuous. These new era board games really engage everyone and you have to be strategic. It was great.
The first game we played was:
Ticket to Ride - Great game where no one is eliminated and takes about 60mins
Coup - Ohhhh man! I love this game. It is very simple and quick to play. It is very similar to "Mafia" if you have ever played that. It is also a bluffing game as well, so if you're good at bluffing you'll excel in this game.
I am also picking up Resistance - Avalon today as well. I'm super excited about this game too. Here is a youtube video of the gameplay for Resistance
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_QRczGzXqw
Anyone have any recommendations on anymore board games? I'm hooked! I'm hooked, I tell ya!!!!

This probably isn't your traditional board game, but I recently found this when we were moving a few months ago:
http://www.museumofplay.org/online-collections/images/Z002/Z00253/Z0025364.jpg
I'm pretty sure my mom bought that for my brother and I back when we were little kids. Not exactly sure when we got it, but judging by the box I'd say around the late 90s/early 2000s. Needless to say, that Jenga set got quite a bit of play time at Christmas/New Year get togethers this year after 10+ years of being untouched.

Not really a board game, but when I was young I played some D&D with some family friends and really enjoyed them. Growing up, it was hard to find any friends who played them (especially the stigma that comes with it). But lately, there seems to be a resurgence in these old school games and I've been following this one in particular for about 2 years:
https://www.youtube.com/user/itmeJP/playlists?view=50&shelf_id=11&sort=dd
Most of them are personalities that came from Starcraft which I also follow. But it's just a bunch of people playing D&D pretty much. Give it a try if that's your thing. :)

I have a buddy where whenever we go to his place, inevitably the Jenga gets broken out.
I've been playing a lot of Trouble with my kids. Easy for them and good family fun. We also have Disney's version of snakes and ladders amongst other games.
Never heard of Cards against Humanity. Wanna check it out now though!

Like another poster mentioned, I found Cards Against Humanity really boring. It's more of an entertaining drinking game if you ask me.
These games I'm playing have strategy and you need to think. CAH is in a different class than these games.
If you guys want to try, I would highly suggest getting coup. It is an amazing game.

Yes.
Settlers man. Just got the Cities and Knights expansion. Planning on playing with some friends this weekend.
Risk. Awesome game, a classic. Most definitely will end in people being upset if you play with really competitive people.
CAH. Great pickup and play game if your just chilling out.
Jenga. Greatest drinking game, we built a life size block set out of some hardwood. Nothing like a 4x4 fence post landing on your head to make a game interesting.
There is a restaurant in gastown where you can eat and play games with buddies. Super entertaining, some people here need to try it out.

Settlers of Catan is really fun. Played quite a few times.
There's also Dominion if you haven't tried it (more of a card game though). I hear Ticket to Ride is really fun too.
Chess games are the best. Western chess is cool, but Xiang Qi (Chinese Chess) and Shogi (Japanese Chess) are superior, IMHO.

^ I like chess game and variation of that but its really only a 2 people game, not very social when you have 4+ ppl over.
I been playing a lot of board games or card grams with friend for the past few months. we started out with uno than we move on the monopoly the card game (very different from the board game, a lot more strategy a must play for all monopoly fanes) and than we recently brought ourselve the actual monopoly board game to play with.
looking to check out bang! next and its chinese variation.
where do you guys shop for board games and card games? they are so expensive brand new

I love BANG! but some of the characters are really overpowered/broken
I really REALLY enjoy Powergrid, especially the expansions. My bro says there is a new expansion to have an India map, with power outages
I also enjoy Blockus, this get nasty mid to late game
I've played Settlers once, so I can't give a full judgement of it, but it's fun.
I'm wanting to get Pandemic, I hear good things about it.

Millionaire Edition is really really random. It's too much luck involved and there is much less strategy. When it comes down to a player having about $800k, the money just jumps from one player to the other almost non-stop.

then during the holidays in my teens my cousins and I would create our own turn based war games and we'd spend an hour or so drawing up our own pieces and spending the night playing....hmm we should probably try and sell our games... we had so many awesome ones, i kept all my pieces too!

i also like playing strategic games so was instantly hooked on settlers of catan but at big gatherings we usually play cards against humanity cause everyone can participate. other favourites are risk, citadels, chinese checkers and monopoly deal
i finally got around to learn how to play go (aka weiqi, igo, baduk). 2 player game and the goal is to surround your opponent's pieces/stones using your own. i love the fact that it's such a simple yet complicated and dynamic game but sigh my learning curve has gone downhill... kinda wished i had learned this before learning chinese chess *sadface*

I recently got into a bunch of board/card games this year with my friends after only knowing the classics (Monopoly, Scrabble, LIFE, etc.). To name a few, Coup, Resistance, Dominion, and Battlestar Galactica all come to mind as my faves.
Some of these take a few games to learn, but once you've gotten the hang of them it's a blast... until you get heated up lose a few friends from playing Resistance.
A cool one to check out is Boss Monster. 1-4 players, and each game is about 30 mins.

Nope, the standard board game is 3-4 ppl, expansions pushing it to 5-6. But there is a card version of the game meant for 2 ppl.
Some games arent as fun with two people(even if it says it can support 2), like Ticket to Ride was fun, but would be much better with more than 2 ppl.

Me too. I don't like games lasting longer than an hour.
Bang is pretty fun, my friend got it over the holidays and Munchkin's is super fun too. I played a lot of DOTA when I was younger and Munckin's reminds me of that for some reason. I guess Munchkins would most resemble Pokemon I guess.

+1 for monopoly, nothing like getting into a fist fight with other family members over simulated financial hardship!
Cards Against Humanity can be fun, but you have to play with a group of clever people. If you've ever played with a bunch of dullards the card that wins every time is simply the most lewd. IE: I would expect to laugh hard at a well played "poorly time holocaust jokes" card, some people don't understand what this is but they laugh really hard with the "smegma" card regardless of what it's paired with.

Because this kickstarter has been so popular, their most recent update and goal is 100k backers which they are currently at 89k in 3 days. It says that will then make the NSFW deck(40 cards at start of kickstarter) 56 cards hopefully. And that the normal deck(56 cards) + nsfw deck(56 cards) = support 8 players!
Bought 1 instead of 2 games, looking forward to this.

Makerspace Nanaimo has board game night every Friday if anyone is interested. Come around 7 PM. We have played settlers, Ticked to ride, Empire builder, Pandemic a great game where you act as a team, cash a catch a real fun game, and Agricola. Agricola was the hardest game we have played. It takes way to long to learn and it very slow to play.

Read the comments for the game and people are suggesting the next stretch goal should be plastic cards instead of paper which would be very good.

on the topic of board games, does anyone know of any good board game cafes or bars out in the city? somewhere me and my buddies can head to while chilling outside?
We've been to Joy-G on Alexandra Road, and their board game selection is horrible to be honest. They only had Settlers of Catan, and the rest are Chinese language games. Seems more like a Mahjong parlor to be honest.
I've heard of Stormcrow Tavern, but I'm not sure how they look at people who stay for a long duration.

Guilt & Company in Gastown is awesome for some of the classics, as well as giant Jenga.
If you want some more of the uncommon board games, try Pizzeria Lucida by Rogers Arena. They serve pizza (obviously) and have an assortment of board/card games available. If the owner isn't too busy, he'll even teach you how to play some of them.

A Store on Main st. called Strategies has a great variety of board games. Some board and card games I would suggest to check out is Wearwolf; usually used at parties as a drinking game (similar to Mafia), Betrayal at House on the Hill and Pandemic.

Relationships are broken when we play UNO...
We keep score and do punishment/shots at every 100point interval. of course, we got our own set of rules
We got two sets of uno, one has a +8 card or we just use two decks if there are more than 7 people playing. so you can imaging the insanity

If you're getting resistance, get Avalon, it has the original plus more characters. It's a lot better imo. It's more dynamic.
Resistance is by far one of the top game in my group, but you obviously need the right type of people to play it.
If you're into the deceptive type of games, I'm pretty sure you've played some or was recommended before, but my list would include Bang, Saboteur, Blood Bound, Coup, and Avalon. There's even expansions coming out for Resistance but I've never played them.

Nice! Settlers is a really really fun game, also usually the gateway game to get your friends into other board games ;).
Just moved to Toronto and there are A LOT of boardgame stores and cafes over here, it's actually pretty awesome. There were barely any in SFO and usually just played boardgames with coworkers over there. Most of the stores also have spaces where there are boardgame nights to try new games or play the ones you have with others.
Picked up Coup and Hanabi from one of the stores. Probably going to check out one of the board game nights and see how it is.

401 Games Online Store (http://401games.ca) and Meeplemart Incorporated (http://meeplemart.com) both have very competitive prices which are almost the same as the USD prices (without conversion 1:1). I'm not too sure how much shipping costs though. Might be even cheaper than buying from a store in Vancouver if you get a good number of games :P to make it worth the shipping.
Great Deals on Great Board Games and More | Board Game Warehouse (http://boardgamewarehouse.com) is also very good in terms of pricing although in USD. Me and my coworkers would order over $100 to get their free shipping and they don't tax (this was when I was still in SFO though).

are there any good 2 player roll playing type like settlers etc.? or most of them are 3+?
i would recommend the following for 2 players
Lords of Waterdeep - looks complicating and the theme is dungeons and dragons (that might turn some people off), but it's a really easy game to play for people not that deep into the hobby like settlers level
Splendor - A real quiet game of drafting jewels, really simple works well with 2 players and is easy to learn
The above two are really great with two players or more racing to win with victory points
there are other games you can play with two players like CO-OP, but it depends on your gaming preferences
Pandemic is one of the top co-op games to play
most of the games I suggested are what I can think of at the moment.
You can probably Youtube them and see if it does interest you or just go to a friendly local gamestore and I am sure the owners will show you one of their open games and that way you can try it before you buy it.

Bought the NSFW version for a secret santa gift. Changed the rules a bit to make it a drinking game for Unlimited players! Honestly. I think we improved the game lol
Exploding Kittens Melonboy House rules
General rules are the same aside from the ones tweaked below
Everyone starts with 0 cards, 1 card is drawn per turn
Exploding kitten cards = 1/2 shots if drawn, Last Kitten drawn = 1 full shot
Defuse card
- Used as is, defuse the kitten card (kitten is shuffled back in deck)
- Used as a attack card, Make someone drink 1/2 shot
- At the end of the game. If you have a defuse card in your hand. You must drink with the loser (forces ppl to play the card instead of hording)
- Can't use the defuse card for someone else on the last turn (only can be used if you drew the last kitten)
Try the game with these extra rules! It is definitely a party pleaser. It'll show you who your true friends are too. (That moment you pick up a kitten but your buddy defuses it for you!:tears: "Fam" )
Pro tip: Use old pokemon card sleeves for your deck. Drunk ppl will spill and mangle your cards
