Currently transferring 30GB of data from my PC (Windows 8.1, Mechanical HD, Wireless N, full bar) to my external hard drive (mechanical) connected to my Linksys E4200 (Tomato) router, and it's pretty darn slow (2.5MB/sec), taking over 3 hours to transfer.
Is this normal?
You have an older router, that's USB2.0. Many small files can be slow to transfer.

USB 2.0 can transfer up to 60MB/s, in a real world situation, that would be 30MB/s. I'm getting 2.5MB/s.

Might have to do that. External HD is primarily used for network media sharing.

well if you are connected to your router wirelessly, you will definitely experience slower transfer rates.

Transfer speeds via the USB port on the router will always be shit. Better connect it to your PC instead.

are you trying to setup a ghetto NAS?
it works decent in my case...mind you i'm on 5GHz N and a dual-core router with USB 3

It's the router. Router USB = shitty in 99% percent of cases. Get a NAS or a network HDD.
