So i make relatively frequent trips to WA and OR. I was always curious why US fuels give me better fuel mileage. When i put CDN 87 in my tundra, it reads 486km till empty(everytime like a default). When i fuel up with US 87 it reads 580km till empty, and have occasionally popped to 600km+ with higher octane.

I fill up just to the fuel nozzle "click" shutoff. I dont fill up the fuel tank neck, it is the same amount every time.

Just better fuel and the ECU reads that there is a different type of fuel?

i know canadian fuel is shit...but that much shittier than our neighbours?

What if it just seems that you're getting better mileage because your driving on a hwy to get to the states and the car thinks your travelling long distances and the range increases so that's why you're getting a higher range

doesnt change whether i city drive or hwy drive in canada...it still defaults to 486km to empty @ full. I roadtrip all over BC have never got higher than 486km on CDN fuels

so when i city drive and hwy drive in the US it is over 580km to empty @ full.

after a fill up my 328xi usually has max 450kms on the range metre but if i finish a long hwy drive its goes above 500kms this is on canadian 91

Roadtripping BC is all about getting through/into the Rockies. Fuel is going to get guzzled climbing those hills.

Okay, guess i should specify Alberta too, it is absolutely flat.

if i bust throught tanks in the prairies or a punch through a tank in the mountains or offroading.....486km EVERY TIME in CANADA

4x4ing, beach running, camping, hwy, city, whatever in the USA over 580km

there is something up for the difference of 100km of fuel difference...


different ethanol content?

City driving is city driving......if i go through 2 tanks in the GVRD or 2 tanks in Portland, it must be proof that US fuels are purely better than canadian fuels

Lol, I feel I get better fuel economy using Shell Premium from the states compared to Chevron Supreme or Supreme Plus locally.

Some of the gas stations in US has no ethanol in them, so you should be able to get a slightly better mileage overall if you are indeed filling up with pure gasoline.

stop determining your fuel economy by the lie-o-meter. that is your first problem

i am not running on that...its just one of many things i use to calculate


but for some reason ONLY while filled with US gas I get 100km+ more


thats not just a random 20-50km difference that could be driving habits. that is a solid difference in quality of fuels

do cars burn the same amount of fuel per liters when filling half a tank and full tank or normally better mileage on a full tank? seems as my car drains fuel much faster when I only fill 20 liters at a time only when my car is almost empty. I only fill full tank once in a while.

The raw MPG should be the same assuming there is no change in driving habit.

If anything, having less in your tank should do a tiny bit better given the reduced weight. (say, 20L vs full 100L) But the difference should be marginal at most.

Use your actual trip odometer to compare and report back. I fill up in the states as well and have never noticed this.. admittedly I don't monitor the "until empty" gauge after filling up.

I used to go to Abbotsford to get gas and I noticed that when I filled up there, it would get 570-600kms but when I filled up here in Surrey, I would only get 480km max.
