Mum has been super into CNY these past few years for some reason. It's quite a spectacle watching her throw orange peels all over the house while chanting things like great fortune, etc. etc.

My wife has made about 12 'leen go' for people.. I am amazed at how much stores charge for what is basically starch and water (actually it's literally that, with a bit of oil).
I think she nailed down a good recipe, using coconut milk, coconut oil, and coconut sugar. It's about 90% starch so I can't really touch it, but it's pretty damn good :megusta:

In case you're wondering what's your horoscope for the year of the Sheep:
Check your horoscope for the Year of the Sheep | Toronto Star (http://www.thestar.com/life/2015/02/18/check-your-horoscope-for-the-year-of-the-sheep.html)
It’s Chinese New Year — the Year of the Sheep — so look east for inspiration with our zodiac guide. Locate your birth year, look up your animal sign and see what the coming 12 months have waiting for you.
SHEEP
1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015
Some say you’re a Sheep, some say you’re a Goat, but you’ll be more of a go-getting Ram this year. Don’t stay in the shadows where you cannot be seen, seek out the spotlight, because it’s your turn to shine. That creative project you’ve been working on? It will bring fame and fortune at last.
MONKEY
1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004
You will be unusually reserved and restrained over the coming 12 months — your clever Monkey brain has some pretty big questions to think about and you can’t be doing with too much noise and confusion. Create a space you can call your own and retreat there whenever you need peace and quiet.
ROOSTER
1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005
Work — why is there so much of it? Because you are always so eager to take on more tasks, that’s why. Yes, you like to impress, but this year you need to cooperate more with other people so you can share the load. Don’t worry, you will still get to crow about your many Rooster successes.
DOG
1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006
No one is more charming than the lovable Dog but you have collected so many friends that your social life has taken over. You still have a burning desire to fulfil your potential, so focus more on your career over the coming 12 months. A few less nights on the town will do you no harm.
PIG
1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007
You will get out into the world and explore this year and the more exotic the destination and the more unusual the people you meet the more you will enjoy yourself. Has the dependable Pig taken leave of his senses? Maybe, but when fantasy is this much fun why should you care about reality?
RAT
1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008
The Rat may not care much about money — the best things in life tend to be free — but the serious side of your nature (yes, there is one!) is urging you to plan for your financial future. You don’t have to give up your life of adventure but you do have to find ways to make it pay.
OX
1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009
It may seem to some as if nothing ever bothers you but that just shows what great self-control you possess. But when romance comes knocking this year — and it will — your emotions are likely to go haywire. Once your affections have been engaged there can be no turning back — the Ox mates for life.
TIGER
1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010
The noble Tiger wants to be everyone’s friend but the fact is some people are on contrary wavelengths and there can be no meeting of minds, still less of hearts. Don’t let differences of outlook undermine your emotional or mental well-being this year. It takes all sorts to make such an interesting world.
RABBIT
1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011
Life will be a frenzy of activity for the Rabbit this year — that dear little bunny we all know and love will transmogrify into a Mad March Hare. Anyone who thinks you lack ambition will be forced to think again and if it’s their job you desire, it won’t be long before they are out on their ear.
DRAGON
1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012
The Dragon won’t stray far from his lair this year — home is where the heart is and home is where you will find peace and fulfilment. No matter how ambitious you may be your greatest joy will come from teaching all those little dragons how to be big, fire-breathing monsters just like you.
SNAKE
1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013
You may be wise as a serpent but there is always more to learn and what you discover over the coming 12 months will change your opinions and maybe your ambitions too. Don’t keep what you find out to yourself — use your way with words to let others in on the secret. Knowledge is power.
HORSE
1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014
The Horse likes to take risks and usually they pay off but a little more caution is needed this year. Make sure you know who your real friends are and don’t fall for get-rich-quick schemes. If someone tries to sweet-talk you into parting with cash, hold on to your wallet as tight as you can.
Tips for a successful year
Do this:
Acknowledge people with a popular greeting, such as a simple Kung Hei Fat Choi, Happiness or Good health!
Go for red: It’s an auspicious colour, associated with happiness, success and good fortune.
Go for Number 8: It’s a lucky number, think about serving eight courses for a New Year’s Eve feast.
Dress up in a new outfit — and red underwear is good too.
Pull together a “Tray of Togetherness” with sweets and fruits, so you can welcome guests.
If you’re invited to someone’s home, bring a small gift, such as tangerines or mandarin oranges, for instance.
Remember where you came from: New Year’s Day is a good time to pay respect to your elders and worship your ancestors.
Don’t do this:
Don’t sweep or clean your house, as you could be clearing away good fortune.
Don’t wash your hair for the same reason, you could be washing out good luck. Don’t wash your clothes, either.
Try not to break any dishes — it will bring you bad luck.
Watch what your wear: White is considered an unlucky colour. It’s associated with mourning.
Don’t get a loan on New Year’s Day.

I dunno man this sounds totally different from what the fortune tellers are saying from what I've seen... None of these are negative, but apparently several zodiacs "clash" each year (including if you're from that specific zodiac)
Not that I pay much attention to this stuff, it's just kind of fun :concentrate:

Not really, but the fortune tellers had a sign up last time we went to man mo temple.. It pointed out all the zodiacs, which would have bad years and good years, and which 'tokens' we should carry to make help reverse the bad luck. Apparently I'm supposed to have a really bad year, and I should be carrying a horse token around at all times.
If I paid more attention to it, I would have bought myself a horse token to carry around at all times ;)

the actual new years day is like the official kick-off of celebrations

This year they saw a volume of 4 billion currency transacted as e-red pockets mainly through WeChat. It was frantic as people were totally into this "new" hype

My relatives/ landlord.
It can be that they didn't wanna give out too little like two 10$ =20$ and can't give out two 20$ = 40$ (shouldn't give out anything that has the number 4) so two 100$ HKD = around 30$ CAD.
Or maybe simply they want me to go spend it in hk
Chinese people giving out things always has meanings
