Warning: EpicScale "riskware" silently installed with latest uTorrent - General - µTorrent Community Forums (http://forum.utorrent.com/topic/95041-warning-epicscale-riskware-silently-installed-with-latest-utorrent/)
When I updated uTorrent to version 3.4.2 build 28913 (32-bit) this morning it silently installed a piece of software called EpicScale. There was no information about this during installation and I did opt out of your other bundled software.
EpicScale is a bitcoin miner that also purports to use your "unused processing power to change the world". It's easily noticeable by the increased CPU load when the computer is idle.
The file date/time on the EpicScale files matches the time of the uTorrent update, which confirms uTorrent as the source.
Several other users are reporting the same thing here:
http://www.freefixer...ale.exe-153377/
(It is possible to uninstall EpicScale through the control panel, but that does not properly remove the files from ProgramData\EpicScale.)
If you haven't switched yet (I did a long time ago when the installer started to get really sketchy) you better do it now. I switched to qbtorrent (http://www.qbittorrent.org/index.php), but there are others apparently worth considering: Transmission (http://www.transmissionbt.com/) and Deluge (http://deluge-torrent.org/).
currently running version 3.4.2 (build 37754) [32-bit].
i have NO such thing as EpicScale on my computer.

It's in the installer most likely
There's no reason to use it anyway

Most likely one of those shitty applications that the installer "asks" to include during installation

how stupid do they think their users are? A good majority of torrent users aren't tech illterate so this was bound to be uncovered.

okay, I uninstalled utorrent, how to check whether it is still in the system or regedit?
EDIT: I had old utorrent installed then updated to 3.4.2, somehow I am not seeing any epic scale in PROGRAMDATA or program files folders, where else can I check it is installed in my PC?

Yes but for everyone using it who is literate, there are 10X as many who aren't. utorrent has millions of users, plenty of people just torrent shit the easiest way they can, and that's utorrent and pirate bay.

If it's installed, you'll see it under Program and Features in Control Panel as well as in the Program Files folder. You don't have it.

Vuze (Open Source software, so there's no BS) is pretty good too. Just throwing this out there. Also has a built-in VPN kill switch.

A shame uTorrent has evolved into this. Been using uTorrent for as long as I can remember. Recently switched to qBitorrent recently and haven't looked back since. RIP uTorrent.

QBT is good. It has a familiar interface, and easy to get working.

I just don't update my uTorrent - not sure which outdated version I have, but it works when I need it.

Almost the same as me, i'm on 1.8.7 Good to know not to update my uTorrent though.
When they started bloating things and add useless shit to a program, that's when i stop using it. Utorrent was great when it was a few hundred kilobytes, now it has so much junk in it i never use; I just want it to download my damn torrents. If it has an ad banner, fine, but I don't want it to include a lame and mediocre media hub like itunes.

I don't know if there's anything wrong with it. Well it is commercial proprietary software, unlike open source which can be vetted (by people smarter than me). The fact that you say you're running a bare .exe file has me concerned.

I was running uTorrent 3.4.2 as well and it didn't appear to have EpicScale, but with all the recent discussion, I realize I should switch to qBittorrent instead.
Started using it yesterday, and maybe it's too early to say it wasn't a fluke, but I got way better speeds downloading a just-released TV show with it than when I was using uTorrent...

for qbtorrent is there a way to not have the files/folder you DONT want from a torrent not saved onto your comp?
what I mean is I deselect all the files/folder I dont want downloaded with the torrent and yet it still appears inside the folder

Oldschool uTorrent here as well (2.0.4), I stopped updating it when it started getting bloated like Azereus/Vuze did. I haven't thought of/heard of a feature in anything more complex that I would want or need when downloading a torrent so I'll stick with my old copy as long as I can.
It seems to happen to everything eventually though, a la AVG.

Maybe it was just a fluke. Downloading a couple new shows from last night and they're both slow as shit.

qBittorrent gave me a stalled error (looked online, and there's no solution) message every torrent I tried to start. Now I'm using Deluge.

any specific settings you guys change for qbittorent?

Okay, I'm going to backtrack again. The speeds with qBittorrent are fine, and seemingly way better than uTorrent... but their speed limiting functionality is broken. Even with the Alternative Global Rate Limits disabled, it was still applying them.
a question for those that had used uTorrent and qBittorrent.
it seems that all the files that were downloaded but qBit extracts much slower than the ones downloaded by uTorrent. anyone else had that?
for deluge users, when i currently remove a torrent, it just removes the torrent from Deluge. is there anyway when i remove the torrent, it also deletes the torrent file?
