: Hey mate, how ya goin?

Hey Guys,

I just thought I'd intro myself and hopefully canvas the group for some info. I'm an Aussie from Western Australia and I'll hopefully be making the move to Vancouver in June-July of this year on a Working Holiday Visa (still going through the highly convoluted Visa process atm).

My main interests/knowledge are in drifting and s-chassis Nissans (silvia & skyline), and I'll be looking to get one of these asap once I arrive in Vancouver. I was just hoping if there were some guys on here who had similar experience with purchasing these types of cars while on a Temp Visa, if you could throw some advice my way?

I've been scouring Vancouver Craigslist to get an idea of what you generally pay for a 240/skyline, prices do seem pretty comparable but I'm just a bit concerned about purchasing a car that I won't be able to register... Over here if you purchase a car that is currently registered, you simply complete a transfer of ownership form and drive away. I get the impression things are different in Canada, as all your cars seem to be de-rego'd upon purchase, then the new owner has to go and sort out getting the car re-rego'd with new plates in their name..? Does the vehicle get inspected when you have it registered in the new owner's name (ie. a chance that it will be declined for rego pending work to make it "roadworthy"?).

I was also wondering if there were any local Vancouver drift forums or facebook groups I should join to get an idea of events and meets? Keen to make some like-minded Canadian mates (or should I say "buddies"?).

You can find answers to a lot of your questions on here ICBC Home (http://www.icbc.ca) for Vancouver/British Columbia laws regarding vehicle registration and such.

You do need to do a transfer of ownership and pay applicable taxes, and then get the insurance and new plates in your name through ICBC. It is a little bit of a longer process (the long part being the drive to your local insurance agent) but there is next to no chance your car being not eligible for re registration because the car does not get inspected, the government is more worried about getting their taxes off of you than the quality of the vehicle you are driving.

As for "drift forums," there are groups out there but they tend to be invite-only on FB. Otherwise you could always try Vancouver240.

in BC there is no rego so to say. Everything is connected to ICBC (insurance). The plates follow the insurance policy, so if you change owners the plates will change with them.
MOT/Inspections are gone, unless your car is found to be modified against the rules of the road, you can be driving a rust bucket and not worry about the inspection next month.
Right turns are allowed at all intersections unless otherwise posted. WATCH OUT FOR PEDESTRIANS

PEDESTRIANS HAVE EVERY SINGLE RIGHT OF WAY IN BC. Yield to them when you make a turn, yield to them when they are crossing.

In SA, when we bought/sold a car all we had to do was complete a form independent of each other and drop it at a Service SA office... here in British Columbia you have to go to any Autoplan broker with the seller and complete some formal knighting ceremony (sign a form).

Welcome! All you need to register a car here is an address. I don't even think you need to have a BC licence.. Just a BC address where the car is registered to.

There are 2 companies in the US that make LHD Utes out of totaled G8s. After the process, they are re-titled with a CLEAN title. Not sure of the process but expect to pay $50k US for one, lol

Haha thanks for the info dude, you seem to be pretty fluent in "Aussie". SA and WA are pretty similar, we just have slightly more shark attacks and better footy teams ;)

I didn't realise there was a fan base for Australian cars in Canada haha! Gotta say I am surprised that the whole ute concept has never caught on anywhere else, they are a perfect mix of form and function for those needing to haul things on the regular. That being said, I probably won't be looking to join any Holden appreciation clubs while I'm in BC, as it'll be kinda nice to get away from Commodores and the bogan element they attract for a while :P Happy to help hook ppl up with parts and advice though if needed :)

Guess I better get used to being confused with a kiwi (New Zealander) or Pom (Brit), but just be aware that they generate the same feelings in an Aussie that you would get being mistaken for a Yank haha, so tread carefully as we Aussies have a bit of a rep for...

Thank God we still have Marmite, I love that stuff!

Welcome welcome. Look forward to comfy sun most of the year, followed by chronic rains. It shouldn't be terribly difficult to find an S-chassis, but then again, most are beaten to hell and back, and come with a nice drifter tax. Although the odd senior-driven clean example arrives with a good price once in a blue moon.
