I have enough experience fixing toyotas because of my work that I was considering applying at a toyota dealership while I wait for school. I was talking to one of my buddies and he was telling me that dealerships pay hourly wage now and not flat rates. He said something about them being union and being forced to pay proper wages. Is this true or is he just a fucking idiot?

Sounds like your friend is rather un-informed.

Most dealerships are flat rate for the techs and hourly for apprentices. That is how mine is and its Toyota.

some dealerships pay hourly but your expected to make a certain amount of units during the day, so if you work 8 hours, your expected to make 8 units or more, if you make 7 units in a day, then the next day, you will be expected to make 9 the next day,

i think this is common among the luxury dealers though, cant have you rushing work on a high end car

What do you mean by units?

Some dealerships will pay you hourly (luxury dealerships), but you still have to reach a certain amount of hours, since they don't want you slacking. This is also because they don't want you rushing on their cars.

Some will pay you flat-rate as a technician, and hourly for everything else.

Thanks for clearing that up

The dealerships I've worked at paid red seal techs flat rate (based on the job) and hourly for apprentices (guaranteed $$)
