Looks like it was a nice, high-paying public job too:
Hydro One is firing a Sunshine List employee involved in a vulgar incident with a CityNews reporter at Sunday’s Toronto FC game.
“Regarding the incident at the Toronto FC game between a (CityNews) reporter and fans, Hydro One is taking steps to terminate the employee involved for violating our Code of Conduct,” said Daffyd Roderick, director, corporate affairs for Hydro One.
“Respect for all people is engrained in the Code of Conduct and in our Core Values and we are committed to a work environment where discrimination or harassment of any type is met with zero tolerance.”
Roderick identified the employee as Shawn Simoes, an assistant network management engineer who made $106,510.50 a year.
Earlier today, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment said the Toronto FC fans involved in the incident will be banned for “at least” a year.
CityNews reporter Shauna Hunt confronted several men on Sunday while she was outside of a Toronto FC game. While recording a standup for her report, a number of men shouted the phrase “F--- her right in the p----!"
Shawn Simoes, seen at right, was going to be terminated from employment at Hydro One, the corporation said Tuesday.
The camera kept rolling as video shows she confronted some of the men who had shouted at her, as well as a group of men standing behind her waiting for their chance to do the same.
Simoes, the employee being fired by Hydro One, did not shout the previously mentioned phrase, but did speak to Hunt on camera after the incident occured. “It is f---ing hilarious,” he told the reporter.
“We’re appalled that this trend of disrespectful behaviour would make its way to our city, let alone anywhere near our stadium,” MLSE said in a statement. “We are working to identify the individuals, and when we do they will be banned from all of our facilities.”
The disturbing trend of shouting a vulgar phrase into a journalist’s microphone – typically a female journalist, often while she is live on air – has happened to reporters in various cities across North America.
“Moving forward, we will also work with our local television outlets to provide extra security support to female reporters doing live hits at any of our games,” continued MLSE’s statement.
“Our organization is committed to an environment where everyone can feel safe and included and discrimination or intolerance of any kind will be met with a swift and serious response. We’re thankful to our vast majority of fans for standing up against such sexist behaviour and working with us to help prevent it in the future.”
Growing visibly frustrated, Hunt eventually confronted some of the men after they shouted at her.
“Can I ask why you would want to say something like that?” she asked one.
“I feel like it’s quite substantial,” he said.
She asked another man how his mother would feel if she knew he spoke like that, to which the man responded, “Oh, my mom would die laughing, eventually.”
While the “FHRITP” trend is vulgar, it could also be illegal.
“So far none of the reporters want charges laid,” said Const. Victor Kwong of the Toronto police. “Bottom line is, if the reporters did want to file a report with us, they absolutely can.”
In Calgary, police have issued a statement to broadcasters that the activity constitutes grounds for a charge and arrest.
“We haven’t taken it as far as what Calgary has done because in Calgary apparently it was quite rampant and quite common,” Kwong said.
Kingston police said in a tweet on Tuesday morning, “Our media partners should not have to deal with #FHRITP. Cause Disturbance seems to apply.”
Causing disturbance is a Criminal Code offence which includes “fighting, screaming, shouting, swearing, singing or using insulting or obscene language,” in a public place.
Toronto police spokeswoman Meaghan Gray said that they are familiar with the phenomenon.
“Certainly if we did have a complainant come forward we would work with the employer to investigate the incident and depending on the outcome of that investigation, would determine what if any charges would be appropriate,” said Gray.
She says that it would be difficult to speculate on any one particular charge, as it would depend on the exact nature of the incident and subsequent investigation.
“You could be looking at mischief, you could be looking at breach of the peace, you could be looking at sexual harassment, you could be looking at assault,” Gray said.
“I wouldn’t want to put a number on it, but it’s happening more and more often,” she said.

And FFS, who the fuck wears an Arsenal jersey to a Toronto FC game...you would think making that much money he'd be able to afford a TFC jersey. I'd fire him just for that.

I mean, its overall pretty stupid, but my whole Facebook is blowing up with people talking about how its "rape culture" and how our society promotes hatred and sexual assault towards women. I mean, the joke could have just as easily been "fuck him in the ass."
This has nothing to do with consent, sexual assault, or whatever else. It just comes down to saying something stupid. I don't understand how people seem to think something pertains to whatever their flavour of the month cause happens to be at the time. The same fucking dipshits would be talking about how this guy was supporting Kony's child slavery 3 years ago by his actions. This is not important national news. People get fired for being fucking idiots every day.

Westopher,
I generally agree with what you are saying. What I think you haven't pointed out is, vulgarity that blatantly involves sexual associations on women is heavily frown upon in our society -- to the point that it is much more serious than the same vulgarity directed towards men. Had the reporter been a dude, and the idiot really said FHRITA (ie. f--k him right in the a$$) instead of this rape bullshxt, I doubt the reaction would be anywhere nearly as serious. The guy would still be taken as an idiot, but his 5 min of fame would almost certainly fade out much faster than it does now.

Agreed lol. IMO there are two types of feminists: those who believe in gender equality and the bitter crones that blame men for all their life failures. Unfortunately, the latter have come to define the feminist movement. I personally don't understand why our society is so obsessed with being "politically correct". Soon enough we will end up living in a 1984 society where even our thoughts are policed for "thought crime" if this BS keeps up. Judge the guy based on his at-work performance, not what he does on his personal time. At the end of the day, literally NONE of us would have jobs if every little "out of context" or "questionable" thing we say on personal time is broken down and analyzed by a bunch of crusaders for political correctness who have nothing better to do with their sad pathetic lives.
Do I think that "FHRITP" is stupid? Yeah, it's really sad and juvenile. If you're going to make an ass of yourself on TV you might as well be original and actually funny.
But I don't think a person should lose their means of making a livelihood for it... worst case scenario, nobody hires this guy due to all the negative backlash, he blows through his savings and needs to take social assistance... one more drain on the social system because of one drunken utterance. Is that fair?

No comment on whether it is fair for Hydro One to fire the guy's a$$ for making a dumba$$ comment on tv (while on his personal time). I just wanted to point out that this is precisely what the N.American professional sports leagues have been doing with much higher profile as well -- teams and leagues issuing outright bans for athletes that commit crimes outside of the playing field. I have always wondered whether it is appropriate for an employer to fire something for something the employee has done outside of work, and this one just adds to the case.

Hydro One could have been well within their right to fire the guy, depending on the terms of employment he signed. It's a big corporation with internal lawyers or lawyers on retainer - they're not stupid. Not only that, but they're a public corporation so they're held to a different standard.

It's not being hypocritical, it's taking your level of stupidity to another realm. For that, one deserves to be punished!
Do you talk shit about other people? Act racist or sexist behind closed doors with your friends? So be it! That's human. But if you're dumb enough to do it on public television or on camera for the world to see, you're dumber than the rest of us and we can criticize your actions.
If he's not in breech of his contract, Hydro One should pay him a fat settlement (incl. NDA) and chalk it up to good press - win-win.
"Breech" of contract...they need just-cause to fire him. Is this just-cause? A third party arbitrator can decide if it needs to go there. But it doesn't have violate something explicitly in a contract to be fired for just cause.
The company could argue that his outside of work actions and activities interfere with his ability to do his job at work. It can be simple as having other employees not wanting to work and interact with him or his outside of work actions could be reflective in his day to day demeanour with other coworkers and clients.
Breaking the company's code of ethics, breaking the law or making the business look bad are 3 very justifiable "for cause" reasons.
Putting a provision in the contract only helps the company's case as it put the employee on notice that his actions were grounds for dismissal.
To say that there is no way that his actions on live TV won't have negative business implications for the company is quite a stretch.

About half of the examples in the following video is with male reporters abd the second example is a female saying the phrase. Clearly those saying the phrase are not doing it as an attack on female reporters. Its a silly prank at the expense of an media industry which has lost all respect in the eyes of the public. Reporters are supposed to report what they see to the rest of the world so we might learn the truth. There are times when they can put their life on the line, dodging bullets and mortars in order to get a story but you are saying female reporters might have to stop doing their job because words might hurt them? I thought women wanted to be seen as strong, to be treated as equals, but they can't handle words? We need to shield women from words? What a great message for young girls.

I agree he's a drunk idiot, but the problem was that once the witch hunt started to try to identify him, his employer got identified and dragged into it. Google Hydro One. Other than the first couple official website links to HO, everything is linked to the FHITP story.
Company fired him to protect their image. In the past it would have been a small local story, they maybe would have sat him down and lectured him and not fire him, but once it went viral, knee jerk reaction was to cut him loose.

I could maybe, maybe understand the guy who actually went and said it getting in shit, but the two random guys this goof reporter picked off after who said they think it's funny? What a fucking joke.

What makes this reporter a goof? She went after some guys who tried to interfere with her job and turned the tables on them. That makes her a goof?
He didn't just laugh at the incident; he encouraged and promoted it. He promoted disrespectful, discriminatory and harassing behaviour towards this goof, female reporter. Furthermore he told her "she is lucky they didn't have a vibrator."

Where is this sense of entitlement coming from? that the only way to get fired from work is to be absolutely terrible at your job?
This guy is now famous for making himself look like an idiot in public and that itself is a reputational risk/liability for a corporation. Cut him a severance paycheque and be done with it.
When your firm cares about their reputation, don't act like a retard in public, especially not in front of a tv camera.

You're missing a lot of things lol. How did they consider it funny? It's one thing to explain it with some civility in front of a camera, it's another to come up with half-assed reasoning.
At the end of the day it's all about image. But i am curious how you happened to arrive at calling this reporter a "goof".
Please do enlighten us how she ends up being the "goof" in all this.

the guy in shades looked like he was gonna do it when the guy that actually did cut in and took off...when she saw him lingering she asked and he confirmed he was waiting to do it, therefore was not some random as it was his intent.
not sure how the dude that got fired got involved, it seemed like he overheard and decided to get himself involved by spouting off at her.

HE was NOT a random. They weren't random bystanders. They were apart of the same group and stood around in anticipation waiting for their friend to do it.
Do you honestly think a reporter would go after some random people laughing on the side of the street on live TV?
She approached them because they planned this together and waited to watch their friend do it. She didn't just talk to these "randoms," rather she approached the group he was with spoke to his friend who wanted to be on TV WHILE it happened and his other now, unemployed friend.

sure, it's fine to act like a dick and say stupid shit. We've all done it, we'll keep doing it.
Those idiots were dumb enough to be televised.
It's out there, they're gonna get judged no matter what the level of involvement is. I mean the level of arrogance behind the answer is pretty self-explanatory. I'd start a fight if someone talked to me with that kind of arrogance.
Anyone with half a brain would've just walked away from the thing or at least thought of something new or funny to blurt out.
Instead you get a bunch of alpha wannabes blurting out retarded answers and look absolutely stupid doing it.
From an image perspective, it's indefensible. Every one knows half wits like these exists but when you're a half-wit nobody on live tv blurting out stupid shit...prepare for a shit storm. Yeah, i've done and said stupid shit. Yeah, i'll keep doing it. That's another thing. The bottom line is that these idiots did it on tv.
At the end of the day, the moral of the story is unless you're a famous half-wit, don't say stupid shit on tv.
There, was that really that complicated?

Where are you getting this from? The clip starts a few seconds before the guy pops up and then takes off, how do you know they were with that guy? I'm not seeing anything that definitively says they were together beforehand so I'm curious as to what you're basing these claims on.

With regards to being drunk and getting egged on, fair enough, but like I said, bottom line is that it's on tv. Everyone's seen your face and how you acted. Everyone's gonna make judgements.
You got drunk, you done goofed. Either way, using the drunk/egged on excuse doesn't really hold up well in an argument. Yes, everyone can relate to it but it doesn't exactly make it valid.
It's like saying i fucked up and got caught 10km/h over the speed limit while in a pack of cars in the Police Forum. Yeah, people will sympathize and people will understand but in the grand scheme of things, you done goofed son. And while an excuse may generate argument, at the end of the day, you were still in the wrong.
I've done some pretty dumb things on the sauce but i don't think i've been that stupid to blow myself up in front of a wide audience especially in this day and age.

It was the right PR move by his employer to fire him. They needed to do something before the public started tearing them down, demanding that guy's head. What you do with your private life is your business, until you decide to make a fool of yourself on public television, and then it goes completely viral. People WILL find out who you are, and find out who you work for, and try to destroy you. This was a hard lesson for that idiot. Hopefully, it will prevent others from being douchebags. Probably, not.

Less severe consequences, but possibly even more outrageous:
Calgary man fined after yelling obscenity at CBC-TV reporter - The Globe and Mail (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/calgary-man-charged-after-yelling-obscenity-at-a-cbc-reporter/article24442762/)
Calgary police have fined a man $402 for making an obscene remark to a CBC-TV reporter while she was doing a report on obscene remarks made at female reporters.
Police said the fine was for “stunting,” an offence under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act, which forbids people from doing anything that would distract, startle or interfere with drivers. Stunting is not a criminal offence. Police say the man’s name cannot be released under the act.
The man made the remark out of a truck window at CBC reporter Meghan Grant on April 24. Ms. Grant tweeted that the investigating officer said the man apologized and felt embarrassed, but she said, “he hasn’t apologized to me.” She said the man can go to trial to fight the ticket. A police spokesperson said she did not know if the man had done so.
It may be the first time a Canadian has been charged in connection with obscene remarks made to reporters. The issue of on-air harassment of mostly female reporters has been in the news since a Toronto reporter, Shauna Hunt, asked a man on live television after a Toronto FC soccer game why he joined a degrading activity. The man, Shawn Simoes, who called the activity “amazing,” has since been fired from his $107,000 a year job by Hydro One Inc.
Alberta’s fine for stunting increased to $543 on May 1.
Seriously? A vehicular "stunting" fine for yelling out his window? That can't possibly stick if appealed.
underscore
05-14-2015, 03:41 PM
Unless the reporter was driving I don't see how that's stunting, at least the severity of the consequences better match the offense though.

Why is that so hard to understand?
Here is another way to think about it. Let's say he is not currently employed and he goes to an interview with this exact same company after this incident. Would the company hire him? No, for the same reason that he is being let go now.

TORONTO (NEWS 1130) (http://www.news1130.com/2015/11/02/hydro-one-rehires-man-fired-after-vulgar-heckling-of-tv-reporter-2/) – Ontario’s largest electricity provider says it has rehired a Toronto engineer fired after soccer fans yelled sexually explicit taunts at a TV reporter this spring.
Shawn Simoes lost his job as an assistant network management engineer with Hydro One this May in connection with an incident at a Toronto FC game that was captured on camera and widely denounced on social media.
The company said at the time that he was terminated for violating its employee code of conduct.
Hydro One said Monday that the matter “was resolved through the arbitration process” during which the company “made its views very clear.”
Social media tips had identified Simoes as one of several hecklers caught on video hurling obscenities at CityNews reporter Shauna Hunt. Hunt fought back by questioning the men about their conduct, but the video shows the men dismissing her questions.
She later said the confrontation came about after almost a year of nearly constant harassment.

^ Street interviews, they just come up to you, no wavier to sign. If you watch the video in the op again, the guy was just standing there. When he didn't walk off and instead "man up" to the reporter confronting her, he agreed to be interviewed right there. Don't see ground for suing when he took no action to avoid confrontation in the first place.
