Kind of a rant but I felt this is a good place to post as there are alot of us on RS who enjoy the outdoors or have plans to head out this summer to enjoy the beautiful places that BC has to offer.

This may long weekend, people decided to camp out at the beach on silver river.

This area is normally extremely gorgeous and a pristine steel head habitat.

During the may long weekend, there were alot of grad parties that were happening up there. Everyone has a right to enjoy the outdoors but when they leave it like this it infuriates me:

I'm planning to load up my runner with garbage bags and heading up there when i'm free on a weekend to try and clean up a bit.

Honestly one of the best investments if you're going camping or up to a cabin etc is the $20 box of contractor garbage bags they sell at Home Depot. These bags will literally hold like 100lbs worth of shit and rarely every break or get punctured. Just set up a couple and toss all your garbage into them. Easy to tie up, easy and clean to dispose of.

Obviously most of the people who go on these grad parties probably haven't been in the outdoors or camped etc more than u can count on one hand so it's a sad reality that these morons have no respect for the wilderness/outdoors/others.

Sadly every May long this same thing happens over and over, grad parties in the bush with kids acting like idiots, fighting and leaving everything they bring behind.. It makes me sick that the RCMP doesn't do anything about it when they know it happens every year.

I very rarely go camping May long because I don't want to deal with all of the idiots thinking they are tough shit after a couple drinks.

Just another by-product of a society that has allowed (many) kids to be completely self-centered pricks who have zero sense of respect for anything that isn't Nicki Minaj, Justin Beiber, or the latest iPhone.

Notifying the school's admin staff is a great idea, it's definitely early enough that they hopefully may be able to cut off some grad events as punishment, or even force students to go back to the area and clean up (with attendance being taken) if they want prom to happen or whatnot.

People who grew up in the 80's (and I mean actually grew up, not born in 88 or some shit) were born in the 70's. Someone born in 1975 was 5 at the start of the 80's and 15 by the end (and actually grew up in the 80's); that same person is now 40. If this person had kids in their early 20's their kids would now be graduating highschool.

Dear Parents/Guardians:

You may or may not be aware of concerns that have arisen from a camping trip in Harrison over the Victoria
Day long weekend that appears to have involved at least some teenagers—likely grads— from our school . As
I’m sure you know, over many decades at many secondary schools, groups of graduating teens often decide to
celebrate their impending graduation by going camping together. Often younger students and previous
graduates attend as well. These camping trips are not school-sanctioned events, are not supervised, and have
nothing to do with the school except to the extent the teens attend one.

From evidence in photos and other online posts, it appears a large group of teens who attend Earl Marriott
camped at “Big Silver” near Harrison Lake. On Thursday morning, I received a call from a member of a local 4-
wheel drive association regarding concerns about the litter left behind as you see in the photos below. Put
simply, the camping teens were irresponsible and rude in leaving a huge mess.

Clearly, the evidence shows these teens are likely grads from our school. Just as the many public users of the
campsite are affected by the mess left behind, our school is also affected and embarrassed by association with
the actions of these teens. Throughout the day I received several phone calls from angry members of the
public, members of the Earl Marriott parent community, and numerous email messages. Images of the mess
left behind are widely circulating on social media. There are many concerns regarding the negative impact on
the environment as well as the impact on surrounding wildlife. There were concerns about the safety of our
students and the impact on other users of the area. These concerns are justified and real.

While the school had no knowledge of this camping trip and has no control over what teens do when they are
not attending school, the incident clearly reflects on our school and all our students.

Social responsibility is a school goal; we need to address the situation and demonstrate that the vast majority of
our students appreciate and understand their civic responsibilities. We are requesting that students ‘do the
right thing’ and volunteer to return to “Big Silver” to clean it up. We will put together a clean-up team of
students and staff to travel to the campsite to help restore the area. We are asking students who went
camping and students who would like to display their social responsibility to the environment and to our school,
to join us.

I know you have received and read letters sent to you earlier in the school year; “Graduation Expectations” and
“Community Youth Activities/Grad Pranks”. I encourage parents to take this opportunity to talk to your sons or
daughters about grad celebrations, as well as making good choices and avoiding dangerous situations. It is
important that students and parents understand the potential dangers involved.

Finally, I will add that we always want our students, whether on school sanctioned events or not, to act
respectfully and appropriately. Their actions impact their own reputations and safety as well as the reputation
