Advice for a Co-Worker's car purchase. All wheel drive vehicle. $35,000 budget
pastarocket

A co-worker asked me for advice on what cars to test drive. He wants to buy an all wheel drive sedan or coupe. No SUV. Budget: $35,000. -needs the all wheel drive because he will use the vehicle in winter drives for snowboarding in the local mountains.
Recommended cars: A new Subaru WRX/WRX with Sport package
MSRP: $32495 (WRX with Sport pkg)
A used Infiniti G37x
Guys, what cars do you recommend?
He showed me this Autotrader ad for a 2015 BMW 2 Series coupe.
He said that he would bring his buddy, a mechanic, to inspect this used car.
FYI, this 2 Series is a rebuilt car. The seller confirmed the car's rebuilt condition to my co-worker.
I told him to stay the hell away from that Beemer. :heckno:
-also told him that it's not always a good idea to bring a buddy who is mechanic to inspect a vehicle. Why? A buddy doesn't want to let you down.
His mechanic buddy may also be the first guy to get paid if there's any problems with a used car. :lawl:

WRX STI is never a bad option. I've been looking at Golf R's too despite my promise to myself after the GTI that I wouldn't buy another VW. But 270HP AWD small hatchback? Yes please.

Golf R for comfort.. WRX if you can live with Subaru's ergonomics but better AWD system avoid the CVT. For day to day driving it doesn't make much of a difference.
Tell him to also get Winter tires.

Definitely look into the 15 WRXs. A great 4dr car to drive with decent power and handling, plenty enough around the city and mountains imo. I have the Sport-Tech which adds smart-key, Harmon Kardon sound system (sound quality is not as crisp and clear compare to Mitsubishi's Rockford Fosgate), Leather, Navi for an extra $3000. The Sport package is not bad since it's pretty well equipped with the LED headlights, foglights and sunroof also.
With the 2016's coming soon and more stock than usual atm at some dealers, further discount maybe negotiable. 2016 Sport models add the new infotainment system found in the 2015 Imprezas/Outback/Legacy, blind spot detection and rear-cross traffic alert, and LED turn signal side mirrors for $300 more compare to 2015 Sport. 2016 Sport-Tech adds 18" wheels plus the above features, $600 more compare to 2015 Sport-Tech.

2015 WRX is the one to choose.
Power, Comfort, Reliability at the cost of some Luxury. Sound deadening is not enough in these cars for my tastes, road noise is quite loud, cheap plastics and some parts shared with imprezas (HVAC Controls, MFI etc)
They do come with summer tires though so will need a set of winters for going up mountains

What he needs are good winter tires, AWD has very little (if any) benefit going to a ski hill.

Wasn't sure if the choices are limited to the 3 cars you mentioned.
If not:
A used 2013 A4 with somewhat low mileage:
2013 Audi A4 2.0T for $34,900 in Surrey | autoTRADER.ca (http://wwwb.autotrader.ca/a/Audi/A4/Surrey/British+Columbia/5_23960069_BS20042414150/?showcpo=ShowCPO&orup=1_15_48)
Or, a little above budget here:
2014 Audi A4 2.0 8sp Tiptronic Komfort for $36,915 in Langley | autoTRADER.ca (http://wwwb.autotrader.ca/a/Audi/A4/Langley/British+Columbia/5_23669940_20130828104053815/?showcpo=ShowCPO&orup=4_15_48)
and
2014 Audi A4 2.0 8sp Tiptronic Progressiv for $37,915 in Langley | autoTRADER.ca (http://wwwb.autotrader.ca/a/Audi/A4/Langley/British+Columbia/5_23282421_20130828104053815/?showcpo=ShowCPO&orup=5_15_48)
The prices are actually pretty good with low mileage.
Doesn't hurt to test drive them.

is he lenient on the price?
is he willing to finance/lease? with the low rates he could just go new
A4 is a good choice
How about an Acura TLX SH-AWD ? it's right at his price new (not including taxes of course)

I'd say the new WRX is the best option out there for a awd car in and around that price range. I've got an STI hatch and love it but certain things would make me lean towards a new WRX if I had to do it again. The new FA motor is incredible and makes a shit ton of power and low down usable torque for a 2 litre while still returning reasonable gas mileage...unlike my sti which sucks more gas than a native reservation. Even Cobb was a big fan of the power results from the 2 litre.

Maybe the price in my head is off, but I think Evo 10s are in that range. I would personally take an Evo over Sti if it were just for daily driving.

Thanks for the advice guys! I'll let my co-worker know to go for the 2015 WRX.
Timpo, read my original post carefully! I did say my co-worker is looking for an all wheel drive sedan, coupe with a budget of $35,000.
GT-Rs, even a used one for a 2012 model or newer, is more than 35 grand.

Yeah, my co-worker is not lenient on the price. He's sticking with a $35,000 (after taxes) budget for an all wheel drive sedan/coupe.
-can't blame him as he is making mortgage payments on an apartment that he bought last year.
I'm assuming that he would be financing a purchase of the car.

If he's not lenient with the price, a WRX with Sport pkg is more like 39-40k after tax

For 35k tax in you would only be able to fit a base pkg in. Sport will be 37-38k and Sport Tech will be near 41-42 i believe.

Yeah, I didn't understand the logic behind buying the Beemer 2 series with the X drive if he's driving it to a ski hill. :suspicious:
He's a Fob though. Maybe he's stuck on that mentality of "ooh, I bought a German ride, a Beemer, at a bargain price".
He can't get enough of that Beemer "prestige factor"? :lawl:

Keep us updated on how his car runs lol.
The only thing I hate about the new 28i lineup is the engine. BMW sports coupes should never come with a 4 cyl turbo. Its just weird. Doesn't sound and feel like a BMW should. The 235i is nice but then again I don't want an inline 6 turbo. I was very happy with the inline 6 na on my e82

I vote for 3000gt... cant go wrong with 90s japanese muscle... low depreciation and may actually swing up in coming years if kept in good condition. Like that red one posted up on page 1.
Assuming the person has cash..
probably get a nice example for 10-12k... add 5k for tasteful mods (wheels etc)... and have 5-6k for maintenance for the rest of its life. Save that extra 15k cash for life... If you need to sell the car you wont be losing much.
