Sports car envy.

Have you been a victim of sports car envy? Harassed by people who find themselves experiencing the overwhelming emotions of anger and jealousy due to your having something faster than what they drive. I suffer from these types of people almost daily, I'm not going to say what I drive, doesn't matter. Seems as though wherever I drive there's someone either tailgating, cutting me off, or trying to race me. The worst offenders? Mini van drivers with the stupid stick family on the rear window, soccer moms in their SUVs, most BMW driver's, and the econo-box drivers.

In these type of scenarios I would apply defensive driving and disregard their emotions. Cause if those people cause an accident it's on them.

Don't flatter yourself. Most of that is just happening because van is full of road raging shitty drivers. Sweet humblebrag though. Would read again.
i'm guessing you're not talking about the car in your about me page:

1992 Nissan Sentra

I usually just sit back, relax, wave and point to the dash cam. That usually has them back off. I'm not one to speed off, rather have my baby in my garage than an impound lot, but I am one for defensive driving.

I use to drive modified sports cars and experienced everything you described.
Now I drive a piece of shit work truck and I feel anonymous. No more cut offs, racers, or dumb ass drivers.
I do miss the cool people who would roll down their windows and throw thumbs up and ask me about my wheels or what colour code my paint was.

Almost daily?
Maybe you just suck at driving or have an annoyingly loud car and it's causing all the drivers around you to get pissed off. Maybe you were going so slow, chilling and relaxing, that even a MiniVan had to cut you off.
This is what I learnt as I got older and stopped becoming so self-conscious. The only people that are actually impressed enough to be jealous of your specific car are people who are actually into cars to identify what it is. To the average joes, all you have is an "annoying loud space ship... is it supposed to fly?". They really don't care.
You kind of remind me of those guys that get pulled over and blame the police for pulling you over because they got jealous of your ride.
The point of this thread didn't fool me.

I'm actually a very good driver, have myself an EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operators Certificate) from the Alameda CA Sheriffs Dept. with over 30 years of driving under my belt, and last time I was ever pulled over was March 1997 and my car sure isn't loud, double mufflers as to not be noticed by the local constabulory

I suffer from these types of people almost daily, I'm not going to say what I drive other than it's a mid engine, carbon fiber and steel, and barely street legal. I find that drivers like you either
- Driving too slow with your seemingly fast sports car (so soccer moms will tailgate you because they are rushing to drop off their kids)
- Left lane hoggers while doing 50 ( i know you'll claim that's the speed limit blah blah, so SUV tends to cut you off)
- Too focus with your own exhaust tone ( when you hear someone driving in the higher rev range, you will think they wanna race you)

I would only put my stock STi wing on for meets or track days. Most of the time it was the limited trunk which had a subtle lip. Far smaller than the stock STi aero bits. I found that the minute I put that wing back on that I would be challenged to race. I remember one kid revving at the light and giving me a stare. In his Oldsmobile Alero. A fucking Alero challenging me to a race. Granted, I was in Surrey.....
Anyway, I get what you're saying. I had one of the mom's at my kid's school call my STi, juvenile. But what are you going to do. It's the price you pay for driving a car that catches people's attention. Racecars attract a certain type of person. Plus thanks to F&TF, they're a rolling challenge to many.

Unbelievable!! ask a question on the subject of some of the local drivers and their behavior and get nothing but negativity from certain RS users. These are the narrow minded self centered halfwits that are destroying society. Atleast there are a few reasonable people on RS... very few, the rest.... typical internet trolls.

So basically you're saying doesn't matter what "sports car" you're driving, it could be a shit box, you'll still have people trying to race you...
Do you see the constant variable? It's YOU. Not the car. It has nothing to do with envy. We live in Vancouver, we see sports cars on the daily, they're not a rare sight or experience.
The only people I see trying to race people in the road are lil punk kids so I mean, if that's the kind of crowd you attract, so be it.

Oh, not dense at all, just not full of myself like some others in here :twirleye:
So you are saying, you realise that most people see it as an old, lacking american sports car but somehow are envious of you so go flying past you in some sort of envious rage?
You are aware that the people that are flying past you are driving cars with better brakes than 20 year old cast 2 piece Brembo calipers. That the Caravan that cut you off has bigger rotors than the wheels mounted to your car? Or how about the fact that it is making dam near the same power that a 20 year old car with a "double muffler" exhaust likely has. A 96 WRX does the 1/4 mile in the same time your car does.
No one is jealous of your car dude, your getting cut off by minivans because they DON'T care about you.
However, if your car is in fact an original, which I highly doubt it is seeing as so few were ever produced, it is a VERY rare car seeing as only 18 were built by Callaway.

FYI, although the car may be rare, but not worth a whole lot, maybe $12k to $15k so I had no problems doing some bolt on mods to it. It still has brembo brakes, but those 6 piston calipers from a 2011 CTS-V, rotors.... 14 inches Z06, wheels.... 18" 'Vette. and that's just the front. Engine mods include ridding the ignition of the POS Optispark distributor and replacing that with a LS1 coil on plug ignition, LT4 Heads and intake. As for suspension, BMR tubular control arms and bilstein shocks on all 4 corners, and as for a WRX doing the same in the 1/4... ummm nope.

You modified one of 8 cars in existence? Your not a bright cookie are you?
If indeed it was one of the 8 cars to reach production/road use then I hate to tell you its worth a HELL of a lot more than 15k. Not to mention if it has the sero kit then its worth even more as only 3 of those were true production cars.
But judging by what you have done to it, you own a old Camero with a knock off bodykit and some bolt ons taken from better vehicles.
And a stock 96 WRX ran a near 13 flat back in 96. Now if we modify that car the same as you have done then, yes, its still faster....and worth more.....and would ignite the fury or envy rage amongst the most mundane of minivan drivers.

Your right, they don't.....and thankfully I dont get people envying me in my "sports car" :)......but one things for sure. 99.9% of the folks around here would rather see/hear/talk about my glorified Toyota than some dude who thinks all the soccer moms are out to run his sports car off the road ;)

speak and read Japanese?
Why waste my time learning other languages when I could be spending that time teaching foreigners how to speak English!!

Personally I would have gone with.

More of an "insult" towards me. Seeing as I'm not bragging about my car here or anywhere else for that matter.

I get what you're saying. I had one of the mom's at my kid's school call my STi, juvenile. But what are you going to do. It's the price you pay for driving a car that catches people's attention. Racecars attract a certain type of person. Plus thanks to F&TF, they're a rolling challenge to many.
ONE PERSON! Only one person understood where I was coming from, doesn't say much for the revscene users.

Well I just read through the last three pages of this thread. I want my five minutes back.

My current ride is a 67' Beaumont. V8, line lock, Loud pipes, etc. The same gal who called my Sti juvenile gets wet over my muscle car! Makes no sense to me whatsoever.
I feel you though. We're old guys in a young man's game. Take the internet for example. Go on a hot rod site and it's all caps all day long. Not like the import sites where I can read 20 page threads on tuning one's IAT sensor.
Crazy.

'67 Beaumont is one sweet ride, love seeing those at US car shows, confuses the hell out of the unknowing American..."What is it, a Pontiac or a Chevy?"
You're exactly right, it is definitely a young man's game here, rarely get flamed on the muscle car and rod forums. I buy an Import to build into a track car and I find that these young import guys are a different bunch.

The majority of people here are very welcoming, however, you still have to make a good first impression.....

Have you been a victim of sports car envy?
In my old T88 widebody Supra? Yes, often
In my old Vortech S2000? No
In my former 135i when it was new? A little
In my current 5.0 E36? Only gets thumbs up for the rumble

Or, if you actually drove something that matched your OP.
You basically sound like a douche from first impression, and you set yourself up like you drive a Reventón or something. Only to reveal you drive a car no one cares about, nor would be jealous about.
:derp:
For someone that's ~45+ years old, you're stupid if you can't figure out why everyone in here is laughing in your face.
It's ok to be proud of your own project car and all, but you really need to know the difference between a car where majority of the population will find your car "nice", and where only YOU (and maybe your own mother) will find your car "nice".

Lol jesus fuck. I skipped page 2 and now see what you drive. I see why you tried to allude to a completely different car. It would be like me trying to imply I drive a mclaren F1 LM. Let me try this.
My car was built in the mid 90s, is full of carbon fibre, has an M power engine and is one of five.
(Its a bmw m3 in a rare colour combo with a rarer interior swapped in, with a carbon fibre dash trim piece)
This is fun....
