Would it be professional to send a 'thank you' gift basket to key people that have helped you in your career path to get where you are today?

This came up when a friend asked me to check out a local bank to see if the manager was still the same as when they first started as a CSR. They've now gone onto ibanking in the states and is doing what they like. Apparently this manager and 2 past employers were key in their career path. They want to hand deliver the baskets when they visit here during the summer.

I personally thought this was ok as its a thoughtful gesture!

Thoughts?

Gift baskets strike me as more of a female token of appreciation, so if the past employers of "they" are female, sure. I know my past male bosses would appreciate a handshake and beers after work far more than a gift basket. This is generalizing, of course; "they" should probably know what they like and dislike if "they" spent significant time working for them.

They = plural
