: Free upgrade from windows 7 to windows 10

Is it worth it to upgrade from windows 7 to windows 10? Is it better or more complicated?

pros and cons?

SkinnyPupp

No cons, just do it. If you were too lazy to upgrade to windows 8 when it was $15 now you have no excuse :P

Too lazy? I just avoided 8 like the plague. There was no good reason to use 8 over 7.

I might try out 10, I've got a second licence for Windows 7 I can always go back to if it's not worth the upgrade.

There is no good reason to avoid windows 8. There are TONS of fixes and improvements made that makes Windows 7 obsolete.

Only real issue I had with 8, and even 8.1, was that compatibility mode didn't always work. My Adobe CS6 Collection and other editing software wouldn't always work with 8, so I had to downgrade my desktop back down to 7 Pro. I'm hoping 10 will fix that problem as I'm intrigued by 10.

SkinnyPupp
06-06-2015, 11:51 AM
I've been using CS6 since day 1, never had a problem, ever. If there's a problem, it's probably not related to 8.

The onyl software that has compatibility issues are older programs made for Windows XP era.. Shitty drivers, stuff like that.

The only real problem with Windows 8 was the stupid tablet interface they stuck on top. But that was easy to remove, making the interface 100% like Windows 7, while still being able to benefit from the fixes, speed upgrades, latest technology, etc.

That dumb interface really ruined their reputation, but really it's not that hard to bypass, and never was. So it's not 100% microsoft's fault.

Windows 8 and 8.1 are a joke. The Metro interface and apps are made for the visually impaired. They would look sized correctly on a smart phone screen, not a 24" desktop screen. I guess that could be good if I sat on my glasses.

It took Microsoft 5 years to realize that removing the Start menu was a mistake, and to correct it. Is that progress?

i thought MS removed the ability to remove the metro interface a long time ago? Which is why I hate 8/8.1 on a non-touch device and can't wait until 10

I honestly don't understand the hate with windows 8. All I ever do is hit the windows button and type what i'm looking for and hit enter. Opens right up. That's pretty much all I did from windows 98 and up too in all reality. Mind you, then it was 'start - run - 'xxxxxx'.

with the windows 10 upgrade icon that's supposed to show up on the taskbar, does it do that for windows 8.1 too? i've seen it on my dads win7 desktop but haven't seen it on any of my 8.1 devices :suspicious:

Does the windows 10 upgrade delete anything? As in does it have to be a fresh install or can it just upgrade to keep all files?

This upgrade most likely will do an in-place install. That means, it will not do a fresh install and delete everything.

As always, it will give you an option to do a fresh install.

I'm basing all of this on Microsoft record history of releasing new operating systems: XP, Vista, 7, and 8.

I've been using Windows 8 and now 8.1 since day one. The first thing I disabled or bypassed was the Metro screen. After that, the OS functions basically the same as Windows 7. I'm on the desktop mode all the time for my PC and laptop. For the tablet, I like to use the Metro interface as everything is laid out for easy access.

Side question - Is Windows 7 nearing end-of-life hence the encouragement to upgrade to Windows 10?

My Windows 7 (Home Premium - legitimate) is suffering from a problematic memory leak which bricks my PC for a solid 30 mins and Microsoft isn't interested in resolving it. I'm hoping the free upgrade to Windows 10 will alleviate the problem.

If I upgrade to 10, and decide I want to go back to 7, is that an easy process? I assume I'd have to wipe everything and do a clean install of 7, right? Would my OEM license for 7 still activate ok?

Do a backup your system drive before upgrading, then restore if you don't like it.

No.

So far, the next one to reach end of life is Vista. Microsoft will drop support April 2017. Windows 7 still still be supported for a while.

Windows 7 may get an extension considering it's the new "XP"

But again, Windows 10 will be the "last" edition of Windows. I can see everybody jumping on this edition from Windows 7.

Since Windows Vista, Microsoft has included an Upgrade Assistant to check compatibility.

I believe Windows 10 is based on the same platform as Windows 8. Drivers and software compatibility issues will be minimal.

However, I usually wait a few weeks after release of an operating system before installing. I never liked to be on the bleeding edge of software adoption. As always, do a complete image backup of your OS drive just in-case you need to do a restore.

Microsoft did not specify an expiry date. I assume what is going to happen is that when Windows 10 is available for release, Microsoft will send you an e-mail to claim your free Windows 10. It is up to you to claim and install it yourself. After claiming and with OS key in-hand, I'm pretty sure you can take your time to install Windows 10.

There was a loop-hole to get a free Media Center upgrade when Windows 8 was released. I still have the upgrade key but have yet installed it.

The upgrade will be on july 29th I believe. You will be able to upgrade to W10 for up to 1 year after initial release.

Would you guys recommend updating with an "in-place" install or do a fresh install?

Im not super computer savy, so would a fresh install be the same as a reformat(starting from scratch)?

or does it just reinstall everything and keep all movies, pictures, and videos and such?

that depends where you have your personal files. Generally people keep them in a separate partition/drive and complete format the OS drive before a fresh install, sobviously if you kept your files on that drive to be formated and get a fresh install then you'll lose those files.

Probably about the same as 8 was compared to 7 - quite a significant performance boost (and battery if on laptop) but not as significant.

I've read that it is more optimized than 8 for lower performance specs, so maybe it'll be even better, not sure... I'll be installing it on my laptop later, and that's from 2008 or so.

That's what it sounds like. Upgrade 8.1. Then you can do a clean install. There is a way to find you 'new' license key in windows 10 before you do. Just google it. But from the sounds of things you don't need it as windows 10 will be linked to your microsoft account.

I did an upgrade, but you can try doing a clean installation. Got nothing to lose! But I've had no issues with my upgrade, so I would recommend it if you're lazy.

everyone who upgrades or does a clean install gets those generic keys. the only way ppl r getting unique keys is if they actually bought and paid for the product, then those ppl get unique cd keys. read up on reddit, people who r doing upgrades to clean installs with the media creation tool or iso DVDs all gets those keys in the end. even ppl who skipped the upgrade to activate first and went straight for clean install end up with those keys

In case people need them doing a clean install.

Windows 10 Home - YTMG3-N6DKC-DKB77-7M9GH-8HVX7
Windows 10 Home SL- BT79Q-G7N6G-PGBYW-4YWX6-6F4BT
Windows 10 Pro - VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T
Windows 10 Pro VL-MAK - QJNXR-7D97Q-K7WH4-RYWQ8-6MT6Y

So those keys won't activate a copy of win 10. You still have to activate your hardware first.

My wifi is pretty wonky after the upgrade. No clean install, straight upgrade.
WiFi networks would either not show or takes forever to connect.
A reboot solves the issue.

MSFT's new Edge browser is laggy as well as I'm typing this post out. What I type out there's a slight 0.5 - 1 sec lag between keyed letters and onscreen display.

This ultrabook is close to 3 years old, UX31A, hopefully ASUS does provide us with drivers so I can do a clean install.

its not that I needed or didn't want pro

I assumed my tablet was also using Win 8 pro like my desktop
so I installed it on both of them, but my tablet isn't 'Activating' and I'm assuming that's because it actually had Win 8 Home installed, so the 'free upgrade' to win 10 isn't working, so I wanted to rollback and upgrade again (but this time to win 10 home) hoping that it will become Activated, but now I cant do that without losing settings/bookmarks/et al. The updater won't run unless you have "Windows is activated" in the Systems Information screen. You can still try to use the offline ISO installer of Windows 10, but during the install, it will ask you for a key. Any generic key won't work because your machine ID doesn't match Microsoft's approved list. To get on the approved list, you must have an activated Windows edition.

Decided to upgrade my laptop the other night. Pretty easy install, which was nice. Only downsides I've noticed is that a couple drivers aren't working. My onboard speakers aren't working (sound only coming from the tiny speaker built into the MB), HDMI port stopped working, and the gesture controls on the trackpad stopped working after my last reboot... though they were working initially.

Edit: Actually managed to fix the trackpad - turns out Win10 defaulted everything to tablet style controls. Had to change 'em back.

Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool - Windows Help (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install?ocid=ms_wol_win10)

If you upgraded to Windows 10 on this PC by taking advantage of the free upgrade offer and successfully activated Windows 10 on this PC in the past, you won't have a Windows 10 product key, and you can skip the product key page by selecting the Skip button. Your PC will activate online automatically so long as the same edition of Windows 10 was successfully activated on this PC by using the free Windows 10 upgrade offer.

In short, if you don’t take advantage of the free upgrade during this offer, you won’t be available to install (or reinstall) Windows 10 on the same computer in the future.

Also, if you opt for the free upgrade, you have 1 year from July 29, 2015 to install Windows 10 at your leisure.

I am still struggling to adapt to this new start menu (coming from Windows 7). I've removed the "life at a glance" and "play and explore" sections, but things just aren't where they have been! If I still can't get used to it in a few weeks time I guess it's time to switch to classic shell and give that a run.

That being said, it did make my laptop run quite a bit smoother, quieter and smoother. The fan runs less for sure!

Still have yet to risk upgrading my desktop though.

I've upgrade a 4 year old sandy bridge i5 desktop a few weeks ago that was running windows 7 and it runs really nice (thought it would be slow for an old cpu), but I had lots of problem getting it to install. Did all the update and the MS tool said it was not up to date but all upgrades were done. After 1/2 a day on and off playing with it I chatted with ms's online help and he just added something in the registery and I was ready to update. Everything went fine until after it finished and rebooted I lost all net access (wired and wireless). After another few hrs I fixed that and been using it since. I'm not a windows person, as my Primary computer is a 4 year old MacBook Pro. But seeing how smooth it runs on such old hardware, I'm actually impressed with the new OS. I would recommend everyone who runs windows 8 to upgrade as 8 is very confusing to me.

I was using Windows 8.1 happily and Windows forced me to upgrade windows 10.
Basically this pop up came up and I had to either update now or choose a date for the PC to auto update. (and I wouldn't be able to change the date once I set it)

So I just decided to upgrade and so far... I kind of miss the metro.
I'm hitting the windows key a lot and expecting all my shortcuts to be there.
Not sure why everyone hated it. I used it like a place where I could junk all my shortcuts so that my desktop could be clean.

The new start thing is way too small to be jamming icons and shortcuts in there.

Windows Groove is looking more like iTunes now.

^ the DVD maker and USB method requires a authentication key while the straight update from 7 to 10 does not.

Get Media creator and upgrade your Win7 install. This will store your details with Microsoft. Then format and clean install. It will self activate once online.

there was a recent update from about 2 days ago that happened over night. not exactly sure on what else got updated but for sure the update has forced every single file types to default to using the windows native programs. all my video/audio files types got defaulted to "movies & TV" app and all my picture files types got defaulted back to "photos" app and all pdf now uses edge to open. did this happen to anyone else too? WTF microsoft...

Same.
Windows 10 with a new build number, hence all the settings being reset to MS defaults.
Sneaky move by MSFT.

anyone having issues with chrome when going into full screen mode it'll always full screen on the 2nd monitor? im used to browsing on my right monitor which is the 2nd screen, but when i find youtube videos i move the chrome window to the left (main) screen and go full screen on that monitor. for some off reason chrome would always go full screen onto the 2nd monitor instead. need to try it a few times before it would full screen on the main monitor. never had this issue until i upgraded to windows 10.

i have the same issue on windows 8.1. i think it is a new update with chrome. if you downgrade the version it should stop happening.

That's exactly my sentiments as well.

Was chatting with a friend who also did the Win10 upgrade, and I am so glad my situation wasn't anything like his. For the most part, my PC has been generally stable and trouble-free after the upgrade, but my friend has unfortunately run into the BrokerRuntime problem. Looking a bit into the issue, I am very surprised to see that MS still hasn't comprehensively addressed the issue even though it seems to be common enough. Had I known about something as serious as this, I probably would not have upgraded just yet.

It's always worth backing up your files, but it's not strictly necessary for the Windows 10 update. Everything will still be there, barring some drastic hard drive failure during the installation process.

Running Win10 on all my machines. No looking back. No issues either with upgrade install or clean full install. Some of the Windows updates are annoying though.
