Nails stuck in your tire.

Hello everyone, so I am just curious how often people here get nails stuck in their tire??

Some of you might think it is a dumb question but I ask because over the past 3 years I say it has happened almost 5 times and I think that seems kind of odd. I just want to know if it is something I should expect a lot in the Lower Mainland or if something fishy might be going on.

I am also what I believe to be a careful driver as I try to avoid most objects on the road even if they are "harmless" and try to avoid potholes etc. So as another question is it natural to have a nail go straight inwards into the wheel? We are talking like 2.5 to 4inch nails.

Hopefully it is a normal occurance, but it may be some dick neighbour trying to get at me or they are sweeping their mess onto the road.

I've found nails in my car/tires a total of 3 times since I've begun driving (some 10 years). It always seemed random to me and the nails were always different sizes too.

5 times in 3 years is certainly more than my experience. However, it really also depends on the routes you travel and whether or not you travel through a lot of construction sites.

Through years working in the industry, I've observed that tires with 50% or less tread have more nails go through, than newer tires. Also, 50% RF, 30% RR and 20% on the left tires, mostly due to debris going towards the curb, either by water or traffic.

0 in 16 years. I guess I'm doing something right.

Having said that, I'll probably get like 3 tomorrow on my way to work.

That data actually helps. Now that I think of it, my Chrysler had a lot of nails almost weekly on the right side when I had reused my somewhat worn summer tires from the previous summer. I had almost thought someone was trying to kill me that summer haha. Although this is the first time it happened on my 2015 Rav4 with barely worn tires but it is also on the right side. Based on what you guys said, I am probably driving through too many construction sites and neighbourhoods with debris towards the curb.

check your tires every park and before every drive.

it'll help you find out if you're being targetted or not.

worth the 2 minutes.

I got like 3 punctures within 1 year of ownership of my new car LOL. That's like the number I got the last 10 years of my previous car.

It's a Berenstein Bears conspiracy. The tire shops salt the roads with nails to drive in business!

Well I pulled two out. One was plastic covered(construction nail gun?) and the other was a construction type screw(can't remember the name). I have a feeling it is around lougheed and sperling as I drive that route quite a bit when I go to Van/Burnaby to Surrey and there has been construction there for so long, but it is road construction not building so I don't know why there would be nails?

The year leading up to the Olympics i had had nails go into my rear tires three times(yay construction everywhere). Was told it's usually the rear tires that get it because the front tires help to knock it up so it's easier to get stuck.

Happens to me at least twice a year, I have to replace at least one tire on my bike before it's worn because of it every year as well. I work for a construction company and even though I work in the office when the foreman come in they seem to drop screws from time to time.

I also have to drive past the transfer station twice a day 5 days a week, not a good combo. I've haven't kept track but a lot of screws over the year. If it's my SUV or car tire I just pull and plug, 15 minute fix. If it's the bike I'll plug until I can get into the shop and have it changed.

In my 14 years of driving, I had two puncture instances due to nails. One was I absentmindedly ran over a 2 by 4 in my lane (FR tire); this happened 8 years ago. Two was a very small nail made two holes in the same tire (RR); this happened last year. It took the service people forever to find the 2nd puncture.

I have seen some crazy stuff in tires.
I have had huge staples, bolts, a nut and many nails. I have not had any in years now tho.

I think it comes down to where you drive. You will find anywhere that there i construction you will get more. Or routes construction vehicles travel. Right lane/shoulder have a lot of debris in them and can cause a puncture.

Worst one to date was a drill bit in a friends GSXR-600. It was a 1/2 bit too :P

This thread reminded me I might have a nail in my tire, since I had to fill it up to spec a few days ago, and it's low again. Sure enough, I found it. I thought it'd be a simple trip to the Costco tire centre, but I ended up replacing all 4 tires because the tread was really low :P. It wasn't a cheap day, today.

EDIT: I remember the time I had 3 punctures within 3 weeks. Damn that bridge crosswalk in Langley on 200.

A few weeks ago when it just started getting hot I caught a nail. In the same week my step pops got one while driving on the hwy. I think the heat softens your tires making it much easier for shit to puncture them.

This is a good time for everyone to check their tire pressure make sure they're properly inflated.

2 nails in 16 years of driving both of which happened in the last 3 years on the same tire. Total damage about $20. Both times the tire only required a patch job so all good.
