I thought they just warn you when you get close to the limit.. but this message from Telus makes it look like they're literally going to just add $5 to my bill if I go over.. does Shaw do this now too?

I hate having to watch how much bandwidth i use now..

I think it's in the fine print that when you go over your limit, you'll be move to the next tier and be billed accordingly. At least with Shaw, that's how they do it.
I exceed my 250GB by 50GB or so and they never bill me though. Been with Shaw for 20+ years, maybe that's why.

The last thing Shaw cares about is customer loyalty. Reason you're not being charged for overage is because it hasn't happened for consecutive months.

A little off topic, does Shaw Go Wifi bandwidth add to your monthly limit?

06-09-2015, 11:35 AM
freakshow,
Over the past few months, I went over by maybe 500MB (give or take 250MB here and there.) I have yet to see the $5.00 charge on my bills which I pay attention to monthly.
I recently upgraded to a higher-tiered package so it worked out for me but I will continue to keep my eyes peeled in the event our household goes over.

They said they will start charging for over use of bandwidth in June. So this would be the month they start charging?

Does shaw have as an explicit a policy? will switching even help me in this case?
From what I remember, all ISPs had a policy, but never enforced it.. If Telus is starting in June, does anyone know if shaw is following?

^ Shaw isn't following from my knowledge, but that can change in the future.
@mr_chin the wifi bandwidth for Shawopen "should" be part of your monthly allotment but currently is not being monitored.
I personally have gone over a couple of times consecutively and they never dinged me for it. I think they have been pretty forgiving so far. Not sure how Telus will be but I am sure it's going to be $$$.

Last that I've heard, Shaw is more forgiving than Telus. Telus will begin charging you immediately if you go over.
Seriously if you guys are that worried, just make the switch to Teksavvy and be at peace.

It's 5 dollars for every 50 gb you go over and 10 for the next 50gb for telus.
If you have telus TV, you can add 15$ for unlimited bandwidth.

I just got the email today that I was at 75% of my bandwidth. I knew they were going to start charging after June 1, but I didn't take my billing cycle into account. I'm still 2 weeks away from that. I'm glad I didn't binge download on the 31st.

I got the same email a couple days ago. Called into the loyalties department and got the unlimited data addon at no charge for 6months. Usually go over by like 200-300gb :toot:

I got a phone call from Shaw a few months back, to inform me that I'd gone over my bandwidth by more than double (500GB cap, I hit 1TB+), for three months in a row... they said not to worry, it was just a courtesy call, but if I went over the next month, they MIGHT cut me off for a couple days. Suffice to say, I dialed back the max bandwidth on my torrent clients...
Overall though, there were pretty chill about it.

Anyone here using teksavvy? How is it?

Shaw has never charged me for going over my cap. I have a friend double his allowance and they give him a call and told him to slow down or to upgrade his plan.

This was my usage for the last couple of months. In May I was in Vietnam so the usage was low.

So, a co-worker was upset that he received an e-mail from Telus stating that they will enforce the bandwidth cap and start charging for over-usages. His household has heavy internet use. He immediately called up Telus, and the customer service rep gave him free over-usages until the end of the year.
This leads me to believe that Telus will hand-out lots of warnings before actually charging their customers.

Honestly, I don't think either of them are that concerned about it... they just want to make sure it doesn't get out of hand.

Probably closer to 14 but it seems like 20? Shaw Cable didn't swap with Rogers and take over BC until 2001, I'm sure you were with Rogers before like me.

We got Rogers Wave cable internet in... oh, probably '95? Then they partnered with @Home... then swapped with Shaw in '01.
Shaw has generally been pretty good to us - got a bunch of great deals when we moved, including a couple extra Portal boxes, and bumped us up a tier in speed/bandwidth, essentially doubling both... all for no extra charge.

Been a customer with them for a year, they do honor what they promise which is unlimited bandwidth, though I use only about 400GB per month. Customer service is quite spotty though, but when their service is down, it's usually their end of the problem, and will be rectified in a few hours.

I would say 90% of my bandwidth consumption comes from streaming media using a media player.
Otherwise, YouTube videos, Internet browsing, e-mail, music etc. makes up 10% of bandwidth.

Telus dinged us for the last bill saying we were 400 gb over.
It's probably from all the netflix streaming we do.
$75 surcharge. Gf bitched and got it removed so we didn't have to pay this time.
We still don't have unlimited as she wants to switch to one of these new internet (not shaw or telus) companies. Anyone else try them out?

I got charged last month for going over, pretty sure I getting charged this month.
Might downgrade after the end of august to 25 from 50 since my student pricing is over and add 15 for unlimited bandwidth.
There's about 7 people who uses the bandwidth at home and I check the usage daily, I have stopped downloading and am still going over.
Stuck on 3 year contract as well..

I've been very lucky as of late. Hitting at most 220GB of my 250GB allowance and on average, a 10% variance over the past 4 months.
I am okay paying the over use charge that is beyond my package's limit. If it goes over significantly for well over 3 months, I'll have to add the unlimited option. Contract or no contract, I think I'll stick with Telus. What bothers me the most about them are their reps calling me repeatedly to tell me I'm nearing my limit. I get an e-mail about this and all they try to do is upsell me. I've asked them kindly to remove me from their calling list. If it happens again, I'll have to file a formal complaint.

Steam sales were a bitch though. Had to wait to install some games so to make sure I didn't go over my limit last month.
Added $15 for unlimited.
Between kid, wife and in-laws streaming/youtube 24/7 (they tend to leave the damn thing running as they watch shitty dramas to sleep) and I broke 450GB in the 16days that they have been back to Vancouver. :fuckthatshit:

wow 150gb seems like a short limit...Well it looks like everyone is running the Social engineering job if they go over the limit "I've being with you guys for 20 years blah blah" or "yeah Shaw is Offering Free unlimited data i maybe go for them unless you fix this problem"
Speaking of which......i thought if you had telus Tv they wouldn't monitor your useage because the telus TV box would be using internet its self to get channels unless they've fixed that now??....i remember during 2003'ish this happening and people would get a speed boost if they powered down the TV Box.

I have a 500GB monthly cap with Shaw.... last I heard anything was about three months ago when the called to let me know I was over by about double three months in a row and if I didn't get it back under the limit, they MIGHT cut service for a couple days, but they weren't going to start charging more.
Might have changed since then, but I put a bunch of limits on my torrent client and all has been quiet since then.

I was prepared to pay the extra $5 though. I even purposely started using up my data once I went over, and tried to get as close to the 50gb overage without going over to the next overage bucket.
Unless I go over by 150gb consistently, I don't intend on locking in for unlimited for +$15/mo.
My contract is up next month though. I wonder if that was a factor in not charging me and trying to get on my good side.
Or maybe it's my first offence since the overage charge system has been implemented.
I got spammed texts and emails (I think I set it up like that), but never got any warning calls from Telus.
