Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has passed away at age 55.

"Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth", reads a statement from the publisher.

Iwata-san had spent the last couple of years battling the growth discovered on his bile duct, which resulted in his absence at last year's E3.

Nintendo’s former CEO, Hiroshi Yamauchi, passed away last month with many mourning the loss of the stubborn businessman who made Nintendo into what it is today. His final words to current CEO Satoru Iwata was to kill himself if the Wii U failed.

In honor of Yamauchi’s final words, Iwata has repeatedly stressed in later interviews that he will kill himself in a Nintendo Direct if the Wii U fails.
