First up :
Yamaha sales on the rise - Common Tread - RevZilla (http://www.revzilla.com/common-tread/yamaha-sales-on-the-rise)
This probably isn't a huge surprise;
-R3 has been a hit, it's accessible (price) and the reviews have been strong
-R1 (flagship) has generated massive exposure for the brand, which has created a trickle-down effect for the R3, the (soon-to-be-refreshed) R6 and their wicked nakeds.
The FZ-07 remains one of the hottest bikes on the market

Triumph fined over recall violation (http://www.visordown.com/motorcycle-news--general-news/triumph-fined-for-breaking-us-recall-rules/28134.html)
Big hit for a small producer like Triumph. Assuming they pull $1500 in average GM on each bike sold they will need to sell 2,000 units just to make up for this penalty. Completely unsubstantiated but interesting none-the-less.

to be fair, they only got fined $1.4M, have to spend at least $500k on improving safety procedures to meet requirements, and the last $1M only comes due if they fail to do this to NHTSA's satisfaction.
still not pocket change, but better than being hit with $2.9M out of the gate.

I always loved the Monster.... But my girlfriend couldn't fit the 1200 or 1200S so we ended up purchasing a 696 Monster and lowered it.... But lately I had a sudden urge again to buy a monster for myself... Right now I can get a Monster 1200S for 17500 out the door and I'm wondering how much would the Monster R be.... The panigale S and R price difference is 9500$ so I'm hoping the monster difference would be around $5000-6000 max as it has no fairings....
Around 23-24 I will probably go ahead with it.... :3

BMW bet big on going small
BMW bet big on going small | MCN (http://www.motorcyclenews.com/news/2015/october/bmw-bet-big-on-going-small/)
-BMW investing big in sub-500cc bikes
-provides massive opportunity to enter new markets with lower ASP bikes
http://images.mcn.bauercdn.com/PageFiles/550708/540x360/BMW-300-Roadster_blue.jpg
From a business perspective this is perfectly logical;
-lower-displacement, lower-cost compact bikes enable BMW to generate unit sales in developing countries (India, for instance) where their current high-ASP lineup doesn't work
-the same bikes can be sold alongside their more premium products in developed countries as a mechanism to bring additional riders into their showrooms. This would broaden the brand's appeal to more riders and create a natural upgrade path to (eventually) get younger/newer riders into the brand's more premium products
I love this and will be watching it very closely....

Any news on a newer generation Suzuki GSXR 600/750?
It's interesting when you look at the market.
Prior to 2008-2009, the sports bike market in the United States was on fire. As a result, and in an effort to promote their offerings, Japanese manufacturers were routinely refreshing their 600cc-class machines on a two or three year cycle. The 2008 recession caused havoc with the entire motorcycle industry. For most of the North American population, motorcycles represent discretionary spending and it's one of the first things that people shift away for when they need to be more conservative with their finances.
Naturally - many new bikes were already in development during this period and many landed in showrooms in 2010 and 2011. However, many have remained (largely) unchanged since that time. New bikes require immense R&D capital and R&D capital isn't made available unless the manufacturer can substantiate an ROIC that will exceed the input.
The Yamaha R6, Suzuki GSX-R600/750 and several other models have been caught in this period of stasis for the past number of years as the manufacturers have been unable to justify the capital necessary to overhaul the bike or are instead putting that money into other lines (the R3, R1, etc.) to satisfy other market demands.
The other major consideration is that traditional bike markets (North America and Western Europe) are being usurped in priority by developing markets like India, China and South Asia. 600cc bikes present an ASP that isn't ideal for these markets and thus the MFRs have been focused on lower displacement, lower ASP bikes that are more compatible with the market conditions in those countries (licensing restrictions, pricing, fuel economy, etc.).
The good news is that the economy is stabilizing in the United States and parts of Western Europe and bikes sales (globally) are rebounding strongly. Curiously though, the 600cc-class has remained stagnant and the industry growth in sales is coming from refreshed and new entry-level 300cc sportsbike/naked offerings and ultra high-end superbikes.
We have seen a surge in superbike development that has mirrored the explosive growth in this category (the new R1/R1M/R1S, Panigales, S1000RR, S1000R, etc.).
I guess the argument of course is always that sales are flat/soft in the 600cc-class because the offerings aren't exciting but the manufacturers won't invest in this class because they can't justifying the associated costs. In the meantime, the sub-600cc and superbike ranges continue to expand and grow.

I think part of the problem is that people are given too many choices.
Back then, people just getting into motorcycles either bought used, or were forced to buy brand new 600cc's. As well, a lot of the >1000cc bikes were sorta widow makers. Lots of power, no electric safety nets and were heavy so they didn't handle that well. People were pulling close to similar lap times in an R6 vs an R1 at the track.
Now we have the <400cc bikes for the newbs/daily commuters and can hold their own in the corners for track guys as well as the >1000cc guys that have enough electronics that everyone is pulling Rossi/Marques type lap times.
600's are kinda like that in between, sort like what happened to the 750's when 99/2000 rolled around and the 600's became much lighter and much more powerful.
Sunfighter
10-19-2015, 06:20 PM
I think that is a great analysis.
The lineups that these manufacturers are presenting are deeper (more fractured?) than they were in the past. The reality is that while bikes are selling it's not necessarily 600cc bikes that are generating those sales... it's the sporty naked bikes, the fantastic new 300cc - 400cc sportbikes, etc.
The industry might ultimately change in such a way that the 600cc-class might become relatively niche. If that happens ... we will see less and less development and innovation within this class.
No matter what - the industry is fascinating right now. It's much smaller than the automobile industry and thus much more agile and can change more quickly. Hopefully this thread will provide some insight as the market evolves.

This is good news. The Suzuki GW250 is not a bad bike, it's cheap ($3199) and looks reasonable but people may be turned off by the fact it's built in China? And it's 403 lb, very heavy for a 250. The full fairing version GW250F is pretty ugly though and even heavier at 416 lb.
Excited to see what the specs of the GSX-R 250 are. 25+ HP and under 325 lb would be good.

It's probably been a decade now since the 2006-2015 (similar engines and frames for those generations) model range has been developed. It's time to move on and come out with something brand new like how Yamaha did with the R1 and Kawasaki with the H2.

Vexor!!! Talk to me about the new GSX-R1000... is this a true R1 competitor or a glossed-up revision of the previous model like the Kawasaki Ninja 1000?
New Suzuki GSX-R1000 (http://www.visordown.com/motorcycle-news-new-bikes/finally---suzukis-new-gsxr-1000/28463.html)

OK, where do I start with this??
I LOVE the new look, sleek, current, and they stayed with the traditional single headlamp. And by the looks of it, it looks like it may be back to a projector style?
From the limited info, it looks like the engine is brand new and has VVT now.
As for those new forks, I don't know much about them but they look hella cool :alonehappy:
Electronics is one area where Gixxers have been falling behind the competition. So I'm curious to see how their version of TC, anti-wheelie, ABS, and up & down quick shifting stacks up to Ducati & Yamaha.
Gixxers have always been known to be easy to ride especially through corners so it would be a sight to see if this new one is faster than the new R1 and 1299.... and even the S1000RR.
I just hope they incorporate some of this electronic tech and looks into the 600 & 750 soon....

I'm quite curious about it too. I don't know why they ever stopped with the projector headlight. They had it in 03-05 and then stopped. But whyyyyy. I hope they can keep the price a be down though. It's like 5k cheaper than an r1 currently

Most likely it still will be cheapest (ie, least expensive) of the litre bikes.
I think they dropped the projector headlamp because it doesn't spread the light as well as a traditional headlamp. My generation 600 still has projector and at night while cornering I am blind. The light does not do anything through corners, I have to use my high beams, LOL

That's pretty much true with any bike. I think someone needs to rethink the motorcycle headlight.
But anyway, looks like a combination projector/LED setup. And wow that's heavenly.

^^ will they fix the heat issue that comes with a fully faired vtwin?
Is it a heat issue from being a fully faired twin? Or is it a heat issue because of the strange exhaust routing? Or both? I've ridden the 959 and it was awful.
My naked twin can overheat a bit in traffic on hot days but nothing like the sportbikes.
jshen
07-17-2016, 10:45 PM
I think it's the combination of both. The heat from the rear cylinder/exhaust routing is right between your legs. The fairings seem to duct the heat in the same place when going slow or when the rad fans turn on. Panigales are unbearably hot unless your going 120+.

This is why I'm seriously considering moving away from Suzuki and the other japanese brands for my next bike. There are no new 600-ish models with the latest tech from the big 4 and also no plans/rumors.... Well apart from the new R6 but I've never been a fan of that bike. Fuck, what am I going to do now if this is the trend going forward? I still want a 600/750 class bike but with manufacturers not investing in them for the foreseeable future, I'm stuck in the past with older models. I really don't need a 1000cc bike because... well I just don't. The other day I was going on hwy 1 and I found myself going 180 before I realized it. So on a 1L bike it would have been faster and I just know it'll get me into a lot of trouble. It sucks that I'm in the minority now. I want a bike with the latest technology (light weight frame design, fresh fairing design, TC, ABS, and so on) but without the 1L engine.

Given Honda's history with "new" models I do not hold much hope for this new 1k. They have hardly made changes to it from 04. Super small changes made to the function but they made it look nice. So unless Honda pulls off some sort of magic with this one compared to ever other previous update they will flop HARD.

It's a Monster with fairings. Looks pretty decent for what it is actually. As long as it's priced similarly to the monster it should sell pretty well.
