Finally switching back to skiing after 8 years of boarding. Bought all new gear for skis. Going to Sun Peaks in December and February and maybe Kicking Horse in March or April.
Just bought an Edge Card for Whistler. Remember to buy before November 23 for the discount!

Nabbed an Edge card with unlimited pre season skiing. I think it's safe to say i'll be doing most of this seasons riding pre Dec 18. Ha. Heading up tomorrow for my first go of the season. In fact, the last 2 seasons. I skipped last year completely.

Whistler was good today. Nothing crazy. Not super busy, enough snow not to stress about hitting shit if you aren't an idiot, some pockets of pow to hit. Solid first day, new board is fucking amazing.

It's like paying a little more for your first day when you use the "free day" on it, and then getting discounts on any future tickets you buy.

couple of more questions for the gold card.
does it get mailed to us or do we pick it up at the window?
does it come with a free lift ticket? or do we just go to the window and tell them we want to use it?
can we buy other people tickets with our discount ?
gilly
11-20-2015, 12:57 PM
^ From what I remember, you can buy the gold card at the window. You get a plastic card. No webcam picture needed. If you want to use your free ticket, they will hole punch your plastic card and they will give you a free ticket. If you don't want to use your free ticket yet, they won't hole punch it.
I am pretty sure you can buy other people's ticket. I am not sure about that one.

It's been like 4 years since I had a gold card but I believe they ask for ID for proof when purchasing tickets. And you can only buy 1 ticket a day with gold card so you can't purchase for others

Yes. That is the way to do it right now because they are being sold at pre-season rates.

Spent the night in Creekside, and listened to rain fall all night. Wake up and the conditions looked meagre at best (.6 degrees at the top, and gusting to 90km/h) Solid rain in Creekside, at 2 degrees. Must be some sort of wicked inversion going on. Didn't even head up despite it being free. Till next week, lets hope for some cold weather, as there is certainly enough moisture.
alex.w *//

The weather seems be like this in recent years
Sunny / dry / Cold - no snow , no moisture , fake snow
Raining - really warm locally , no snow , wet and soggy
I miss those cold winter days when it hovers around 2 or 3 degrees locally and snow up the mountains

We've always had snow in November, especially on the mountains.
Its more so, remembering when mountains opened in early November that I miss the most.
The memory that I am most fond of, was when I fractured my pelvis the second week of November when cypress opened up mad early 4 years ago. Took me out of commission for 8 weeks

Whistler is getting hammered right now. It was deep up high and its going to be even deeper tomorrow. Was dumping in the village and on the highway. The rain turns to snow maybe 15 minutes past Squamish.

Help!
I'm drowning in pow!
Waist deep pow on Whis if you were willing to hike to it in Harmony bowl today. Easy half laps; combine green chair with skinning/bootpacking Pika's.
Looks like temperatures have a mild downward trend with the precip tapering off on the 11th or 12th.
Cypress/Grouse should be able to repair any rain damage with the city temps trending like they should.
Whis should be opening more of the alpine any day now. They had chairs on and off Peak twice today and then they were turning Harmony but had no chairs on it.
Symphony should hold good lines all week until the weekend crowd chops it all up on the 12-13th.
Midweek laps at Cypress for me followed by tours next weekend and the weekend after.
Good times ahead.

I'll try and get a couple pics up. Had an all time kinda day in whistler. Hiked up 7th before it had opened yet this year and had some of the best turns I've had in the last 2 years. Hit some fun stuff up on Harmony in the bowls. Crystal had some good stuff and right when we got up there even under excellerator right on the sides of the runs was deep. Stuff needs to fill in more in the trees, but its coming. Overall a huge surprise how good it was.
Likewise Westopher. I'm still up there right now.. aside from the winds near the top and fog in some areas, its been pretty good. Debating if I should board again tomorrow as theres another wind warning. Its been snowing all day today though.

I need to ease into the season at my age, and after 19 years of riding, my body lets me know haha. Saturday was blasting through white out conditions (and waist deep pow) near Elfin lakes.

New chair on Crystal Ridge. Slightly longer than the old triple and makes sessioning the Glacier much faster.
They sometimes punch passes for dirty lining Spanky's
They renovated Rendezvous
The lines on 7th are longer than ever
Harmony is now a 6 person chair up from 4
New cabins on Whis Ghandi
Franz's is icier than ever
RWDI forecasts on the website are 100% bullshit and the old in-house forecasting was way better
Speed patrol seems more anal these days, especially when riding out towards the Village at the end of the day

I'm on my third Whis RFID card.
First one mysteriously stopped working right as I was about to load the peak.
Second one became unreadable from water damage.
I wish they spent $1 more and issued plastic ones like Octopus.
The lifties on Red chair have a seasons pass on a stick. If you fumble with your pass or the gate doesn't open right away, they reach in and scan the pass on a stick. They use it to keep the flow of people moving fast during the morning rush upload from Creekside.
Even though the gates seem to be 99% reliable, 1% failure is still a lot. Of 3600 people per hour (Harmony max capacity) times 5 hours open in a day means 180 people that screw up the line.
What really gets me about the RFID pass things is why they don't have 100% rollout on the gates.
I've heard part of the reason was to prevent people from spending all day in-bounds after buying a backcountry access pass... but what's the point of that if there are no gates on a bunch of the lifts still?

road conditions werent bad at all. but if you're going to park at the paid parking area closer to the entrance i would advise you to have winter tires or AWD. gets really snowy near the end of the day. other than that it's totally fine
i'm probably gonna go back to cypress on new years day
was at whistler 2 weekends ago, pretty good snow - cypress last night was amazing though. fresh pow on every run I went on, busy as hell during the day but tapered off noticeably around 5pm. visibility was terrible as it got later cause cloud cover was low but other than that, perfect pow day. was lightly snowing on the way up but had stopped by the time we were coming down, awd and all seasons will do you for now. like gurl said tho at the higher lots you probably want snowies to be safe

The parking lot at Cypress was so full on Saturday. I parked all the way down at the end (in-line with the moguls judging tower)... but somehow there were minimal lines for the lifts? Where were all the people?
I slashed Bowen West Glades a few times. People were cheering at me from the chair. I didn't really think I was doing anything worthy of being cheered at?
Got to demo a GNU Beast. Good board. Nice and nimble in the trees (Bowen West Glades and Top Gun approved) but it seemed to lack power on the groomers. Could have just been my front foot angle. Who knows.
Then Whis on Sunday. HFS. Face shots on every single run.
Franz's and Lower VD until peak opened.
5th person through Whis bowl.
First tracks down Shale Slope
Then 3 or 4 laps through Christmas Trees.
Then Cockalorum
Then Hourglass
Then Harveys
Then a hike to Flute where I was completely alone through the Flute Chute. Fresh tracks at 2pm!
First time in a long time that I missed last lift for both Harmony and Green chair. Had to go all the way to Garbo to hook on to Dave's to get back to Creekside.

went up to cypress again yesterday with a couple buddies - absolutely amazing. i havn't been going as regularly as i have been this year for the last few years, but yesterday was the best pow day in recent memory. crystal clear visibility the whole night, powder waist deep at some areas. quite a bit of traffic with that said though

I hit up Big White for the afternoon, awesome snow after the last few days of it dumping but the runs and main tree areas are pretty used up. I still managed to find knee to thigh deep freshies in a few secret spots late in the afternoon though, so I'm tempted to go up tomorrow for the morning before going to work.

What a useless article.
the North Shore mountains are trying to figure out some traffic control measures over the holiday break.
At Cypress and Grouse, there are no specific traffic control measures in place
So not mountains, just mountain... and then Seymour has done controlled release up the road for years now too. :squint:

Landing isn't too bad either, it's getting rid of the speed without eating it that usually gets me.
^ definitely what gets me too
You have to power through that, get more comfortable at high speeds.
Anyone been up to Cypress recently (ie. during winter break for kiddies), don't know if it's worth going if wait time for lines will be long and lots of traffic on the hill.

Don't go during the weekends if possible. Rental on weekends will take upwards of 2.5 hours (my friend went through with that). Otherwise, the past Sunday was amazing with the downpour of fresh powder. Amazing day.

it's really about board control. If you can ride down steeper and choppier terrain with 100% confidence then landing on any kind of airtime is the essentially the same thing.
When I coached years ago, the one BIG mistake that people made when landing on any kind of jump was, they would look directly down at where they landed. which leads back to board control, and confidence in your own ability.
You have to be able to anticipate the terrain ahead of you and look FAR forward. if you look down at your feet, or at your gear, you might land successfully....however you will find that the majority of the time you won't be able to anticipate the pathway ahead of you.
The same goes for any box/rail, know where your feet/board/skis are, and look towards the landing. Once you're on the obstacle, slide it out and anticipate the landing....you'll be more successful and obtain more confidence.
One last piece of keyboard advice? learn to ride switch. And learn to ride it WELL. You'll never know when you will need it. IE: accidentally rotating while in the air or over rotating in the air, or just prepping for a switch take off. It really really comes in handy

Based on the highway cams it looks paved pretty much the whole way. Winter tires will be sufficient, just look at the upcoming forecast for any snow when you decide to head up. You shouldn't have a problem though.
We should get together for a little meet up soon. Reminiscing cypress from a number of years ago with 10+ people. Location will be cypress as it seems to be the one most people choose to go to/have passes for.
I can do weekends or else night owl (after 5pm) at cypress on weekdays because of work.

Was up at Sun Peaks from Boxing Day til New Year's, and I haven't had this fun of a season in a long time. Compared to the last few years, it was dead. Before, lineups at the bottom 2 chairs would touch each other by about 1 pm, but this year, the longest I lined up for was 10 minutes.
First day was a great powder day, over a foot deep in some places. The rest of the days had a great temperature inversion, so it was warmer on top, where all the good runs are. Visibility was great, sun was out 4/5 days I was there.
And some pics, just because they're almost mandatory lol.

Was up on Cypress on X'mas day and yesterday.
Got there around 8:30am on X'mas day, parked near the end of the first lot. It started to get really busy so called it a day at around 2:30pm. It took me 1 full hour to drive from where I parked to the tube park intersection with all the traffic trying to get the the tube park area and people trying to park alongside the road.
Got to the mountain yesterday around 8:10 and the first 3 runs were great, no wait at the lift. While on the lift, you can see the rental line went all the way to where the $10 paid parking sign is, crazy.
Down for a Cypress meet. Can do weekends or weekday night owls except Mondays n Wednesdays.

^ I went on saturday as well and I hated waiting in line to go up the lifts. The line was like doubled compared the usual. Plus people were just everywhere and stopping midway through @__@ getting in my way on the runs..
I almost wiped out a little kid practicing skiing.. He almost turned right into me since I was going full speed down the horizon lol ugh weekends.
If you're renting I suggest you to go to sports junkie or MEC whatever to get gear... Or just straight up buy your equipment on craigslist for ~150 whole set(board, bindings, boots) That way you avoid the crazy line ups. If anybody needs a pair of black goggles I actually have an old pair that you can keep. But its old and I never used it. Lol it's my cousins
As for parking, there's usually a guy standing there telling you to park to the left because the main lot is full...just go ahead anyway (there's still some parking spots up front so just go up and check before you park all the way in the back) lol i hate walking far

went to sunpeaks on dec 26-29. Snow was awesome there and wasnt too crowded. The thought the higher lifts are a bit slow and they only had 2 fast chairs. The runs were pretty good though. I still prefer Big White over Sun peaks
During my stay there, sunpeak's water main broke so more than half of sun peaks didn't have water!!! OMFG. We couldn't shower, couldn't flush the toilet, gotta take a shit in a plastic bag and couldn't prepare food. It was terrible since we had 14 people in our apartment. We didn't have water for almost 2 days. We messaged our landlord asking for a small compensation and he sent us a cheque for a full refund even though it wasnt his fault. lol. We were quite surprised because we were expecting a couple hundred.

Hello, when i go up i usually wear my Under Armour base layer 4.0 top and bottom. My Burton AK pants and jacket is worn over my base layer and I'm good to go. Also depends how far up you go, up at the top can get pretty cold if you don't have the right gear.

Warm or cold, a good base layer is the key to regulating heat. Not just staying warm. It does more work to pull moisture like sweat away from the body.
Dry = comfortable.
Nothing is perfectly waterproof. If its raining, you are gonna get wet. Bring a mid day change of clothes for worst case scenario. That said, if its raining, I'm getting shitfaced at seppo's.

if the pants are insulated then i wouldnt bother, but if they're just a shell then yes wear the leggings.
what they ^ said. a good base layer is definitely a must, top and bottom. usually overtop that i just wear my boarding pants+jacket and i'm good. sometimes it does get chilly but the most i'll go is a light sweater overtop the base layer. and i'm talking -10 cold
i usually wear a balaclava as well, especially if its snowing. most worthwhile $30 you can spend imo

My only cat day in BC was at Big Red Cats in Rossland. It was epic. Terrain there is super steep and has tons of fun features to boost off of. They also separate groups into skill level so your not stuck waiting around for slower people in your group. The only downside to Rossland is its 8-10 hours one way depending on weather.

lucky for us, we picked it up extremely fast. we did a few runs on the bunny hill and went right up on the chair lift to the mid way. great instructor and great day. the wet snow from some rain i guess made it stickier? didn't get too much speed going but im just fine with that.

im now shoppipng for a new one but honestly i dont know how i should begin. Should i stick to the same brand and just step down from size 10 to size 9.5 ?
the boots i owned right now is Burton MOto

^Got the same problem as you man, but with Ski boots. Frustrating as fuck, and doesn't help that boots cost $$$

It shouldn't be that complicated. Try them on, prepare for them to pack out maybe 1/2 a size at most. Just buy boots that fit. That includes width and instep, not just heel to toe. I wear sz 9 shoes and sz 9 boots.

Just wear more socks.... :lawl:
I don't know I have used Rome boots for the last like 6 years, I usually wear them around the house as much as possible for a couple days to flex them out and pack em in. Then take them to the shop to get heat molded to my feet, and usually by the 2nd or third day on them they are perfect and comfy as all hell.
I guess I just know now that I am a size 10.5 in Rome Boots, so I don't even try them on when I grab a new pair.

Heel lift
Ever since I stepped up into top-end 32 boots (ones that have the level-3 liner), The heel pocket on them has prevented basically all lift for me. Narrows and holds a lot on either side of my achilles. Ultralights are now my everyday boot.
If I didn't get as good of a price as I did, I would probably have gotten TM-Two. Same fit when I was jumping around the store, just a tiny bit heavier (and less space-age looking which actually is a good thing).

I was in Whistler yesterday and the top half of the mountain was soft pack snow with powder sections in the bowls. The very bottom section after mid station is all slush. So anything in-between is hard pack/icy.

Anyone ever buy a Whistler lift pass of craigslist? Since moving to NFC cards, what's stopping people from selling there used passes? I'm looking to go on sunday.

That with one button push online at store.whistlerblackcomb.com, the previous owner can deactivate the card.
That the lifties at Base2, Village, and Creekside have ipads that show the passholder's photo when they first upload.

So I spent all of Sunday in Whistler again. There's a tonne of snow up top. Some sections around symphony is waist deep. I spent the whole day on the Whistler side. It became really icy on almost every narrow green run. More specifically expressway from the top of creekside gondola to the top of crapple. From crapple down, it's all slush. Visibility was shit from the peak2peak and up most of the day.

For those with experience going to Cypress in March, is it possible for a Genesis Coupe (turbo RWD) with stock all seasons tire to drive up to the parking lot? I plan on going this weekend. The car doesn't even accelerate with 1 inch of snow within Vancouver so it's pretty bad.

Depends on the day obviously. Weather changes. Pay attention to the forecast. Its been snowing up there quite a bit, so I'd say if its 8 degrees or lower and raining in the city, you're likely fucked if you aren't an experienced snow/slush driver.

I went up Blackcomb with Altus Mountain Guides for StokeFest today.
The guides are so so very laid back even in the gnarly conditions. I wish I had even half the confidence Joey Vosburgh (https://goo.gl/UdLwLT) and Justin Lamoureux (https://goo.gl/uZnwtE) do.

Dude. WTF no. Just break out the monoski if you want to be weird.
But let me get this straight:
Through the "traditional" progression, you start working up through stiffer boards and stiffer boots. Big mountain col slashers and pro splitboard guides even rock hardboots and wire bindings with near 0- flex.
Now some crazy people come along and claim that the future of snowboarding is by throwing out all the carving power and replacing it with a lazy susan.
Extra bonus: in the setup demo video, they show it off with Sorrel mukluks.

So the binding is free to swivel all the time? Sounds like a shortcut to getting hurt while having horrible control over your board to me.

i think in one of the videos it says you can lock it when carving on heels or toes, not sure how that works

anyone been to cypress recently? was thinking of going night skiing after work if its not too slushy
Cypress is only open during the day now from 9-4 and closed completely Monday Tuesday which really sucks cuz I usually go after work at night or on Mondays when I'm off. Snow is spring like, its not bad but if you haven't waxed your board in a while, do it before you go.
Anyone been to Seymour lately? Do they still have decent snow or is it half bald like Grouse?
