Best chinese bbq & hainanese chicken places
MuranoGO-15

I'm still searching for the place in the lower mainland that has the best chinese bbq items. I'm referring to like bbq pork, soy chicken, roast pork & stuff. Who is the best that you guys have tried. I'm not really concerned with the prices, just whomever is the tastiest and juiciest! I find alot of places there meats are really dry! I've had it mostly at TNT, the one in Metrotown seems to make the best bbq items compared to their other locations! Some places don't serve you the soy sauce or au jus dripping sauce for dipping or give you the green onion with ginger sauce that is so important to eat these things with!
Also, I love hainanese chicken, and was wondering if anybody found a good place for that too?

Ohh HK BBQ Master, I seen it once while I was at the superstore there, but never knew it was good. I will sure to try that place!
I go to the car sticker/accessories place in aberdeen mall alot (the one besides H-mart), and I will make sure to go upstairs to try the hainanese chicken at Cafe D'lite Express for sure! :D

BBQ Meats; HK BBQ Master. Kam Gok Yuen was my favorite in Chinatown before they burned down though.. :(
Hainanese chicken: City 1 Cafe on Oak/King Ed next to the Safeway. I was just there today actually cause I was craving it. Cafe D'lite isn't bad either. I just wish Mama Lee's (on Broadway) had better service..

For BBQ Pork it's BBQ Master hands down.
It's pricier than other places but for a good reason!

I'm a real fan of Chong Lee. Roasted pork is slightly cheaper than most places yet more delicious than most. BBQ pork (Cha sui) is godly ONLY if you ask to pour some of the 'soup' onto it (the cha sui soup has BBQ duck fat dripping into it). Their BBQ pork does not have the 'left over' taste even after a couple of nights in fridge.
mama lee is pretty trash now.. went recently and it was juss bad..
hk bbq master is the best for chinese bbq haha

Mama Lee is really "ma ma day" *sorry for the stupid joke. It did say their service suck due to low level of staff so I gave them that.
The chicken wasn't that epic, yes it's boneless but there was nothing special about it. I do like it when I get pickled dicon and carrots and some salty nuts to go with it and all they had was just cucumber.
The rice is NOT oily which I was impressed. It did a good taste to it but when you get "yellow oil rice" you expect it to be flavored with depth and a tad of oil.
I'm not bashing mamalee, cause to be honest, I haven't tried making it myself. just wouldn't bother going there for it.
Prata-Man Singapore Cuisine in Richmond woudl be my choice for hainanese chicken.

BBQ Master, of course no doubt so I won't talk much on them.
My other favorite place is Master Hung BBQ. Soy chicken is their specialty but their BBQ Meats overall are solid. It's overall a great place to eat in general.

Parker Place's chinese bbq (the one next to hsbc) is also pretty good. Plus, they have whole BBQ gooses for sale (you might have to order in advance), something most places don't have

IMO BBQ Master has gone way down hill...pork is very porky tasting and the duck is always burnt.
I tried a new place (don't know the name) but its like right next door to Richmond Sushi and it recently opened. Very high quality in BBQ meat and its my go to spot. Moist cha siu and crisp (not burnt) BBQ duck and roast pork that has a clean flavour and super crunch to it.
For hainanese chicken Aberdeen food court is probably one f the best in town.

Maybe it was hawkers? I used to love their hainanese chicken there with their ginger chili sauce until they changed ownership. Doesn't taste the same, but I also haven't been back for a long time. Maybe someone here wants to give it a go.

Probably not but I would probably expect them to be busier than usual especially BBQ Meat places so if you don't inquire about pre ordering, go earlier.
jinxcrusader - yes, Mui Garden is/was also famous for their H Chicken but Mui Garden is a thing of the past. When they were at their peak there wasn't as many places around, a fair bit but not like now. I recently went to the Richmond one which is the first time I've been to any Mui Garden since my Teens (I'm 33 now) and you can tell a place has gone fucking down hill when the Awards for Best this and that on their walls are from over 10 years ago lol. To me that always signals "used to be good but not anymore". Needless to say, my meal sucked hard, had the "go to" items and I could have gotten better going practically anywhere else. I'm sure some of the other locations might be better i.e. Main but either way that was the last time I'm eating there ever.

this place use to be good a few years ago when they actually cut slices off the chicken. afterwards, they started cheaping out by shredding the chicken, giving you less meat and increasing the price by a dollar or 2. its still a decent choice but not as worth it as before.

I remember Mui Garden! When I lived Downtown, I used to order from them alot. Those guys who worked there and did deliveries, use to drive real nice cars, and were at the races back in the day too. Why did Mui Garden go out of business? Not only they had nice hainanese chicken, but they also had a nice roti and curry sauce too!!!

oh that HK bbq master place under superstore reminded me of one of my experiences
i went in asked for 1 LB of BBQ pork and half BBQ duck. i heard the guy started chopping the BBQ pork and while i was paying, i heard the cashier YELL at the butcher DONT CHOP IT! im like wtf? didnt think much of it cus i thought she was talking about another order
went home, opened the food and found half my BBQ pork not chopped...
https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/11057843_10152949377318411_8351062222025823362_n.j pg?oh=bdde45eefc253a16d4f35462dccecca9&oe=57107B1D
then i found this new place, Kowloon BBQ or something, same plaza as the return it depot on westminster hwy. the butcher claims he uses pork jowl meat for his BBQ pork, and yes indeed its fking soft n juicy, unlike other places where its dry and hard like cardboard. it is a somewhat hit and miss tho, sometimes the BBQ pork is really good, sometimes just soso, but still better than HK BBQ MASTER

Kinda off topic but i went to hawkers delight on main king ed about 2 weeks ago (my first time) and although it was busy...it was by far the worst hainanese chicken experience I've had. I don't know if it was an off day (cause I've heard good things) but the chicken had this freezer burn taste. Plus to make matters worse, they don't have the ginger-green onion oil AND the red chili sauce looked like barf. Worst...ever.

My Dad always told me to go to Wing Hing on Victoria Drive when we were living in the area, so that's where we went. Not sure if it was due to quality or distance (perhaps both), but I took his word for it since he's been in the business his whole life. Now that I'm in Burnaby, I go to Chong Li.
As for goose, it's legal to eat them. It's just the economics. Duck is a lot more affordable in comparison so that's what they make/sell. I'm sure if you go to a store and request for a special order, they'd do it.

Had Chinese BBQ Goose many times. The local gooses are too lean and the meat texture and flavor isn't as good as a duck. I'd take duck over goose any day. Goose in HK/China on the other hand.. :sweetjesus:
$21 for a whole chicken and 5 bowls of yellow rice at coco hut.. thats good game.. wurf
