Still one of the best speeches from a movie. Might not have Will Smith in it, but at least the Goldblum is in it!

it won't be the same without will smith.

At least there's no Jayden Smith. :lol

Not sure how I feel about this. Don't think it could live up to the original. Hope they don't just pepper with over reaching CGI.

While I absolutely love the original Independence Day, I'll also be the first to admit that it's the very embodiment of the typical 90's summer action flick. Heavy CGI, generic stereotypes in place of proper characters or character development, big explosions, uplifting ending, etc. Think of what else came out during that decade: The Rock, Con Air, T2, Die Hard, Starship Troopers, Goldeneye, Bad Boys, Jurassic Park and other such type of films. Those were all fantastic films, but if you really think about it, they all tended to (mostly) follow the same basic formula.

I think nostalgia will play into many of our minds about how this new one should be, and how it shouldn't focus on heavy CGI or that the alien ships are too large or whatever other complaint we can think of. The truth of the matter is that the original film did make use of heavy CGI, it did use unknown or non A-list actors, it did feature the largest alien ships on screen up to that point, it did have a very formulaic plot and instead favoured explosions and effects.

Just something to keep in mind.

Also, forgot about this video. Watched it a couple months ago and it states pretty much the same thing, just in a slightly more amusing style.

Will Smith killed his character when he demanded sole starring role/focus & over $50 million to shoot 2 sequels to ID4, studio laughed and walked away.

Loved the original but Lomac nailed it. Typical 90's action flick with all the stereotypes and plot formulas you'd expect. So everyone from the original that didn't make it as big as Will Smith is back for another go? Haha!

Turn brain off + lower expectations = pure entertainment

Me and my buddies rewatched the first one recently and made a drinking rule where whenever an Alien thing comes out, we had to take a sip. We got plastered like halfway in the movie LOL.

Still looks awesome! Will see it in theatre for sure. Love the returning cast members.

I remember the audience standing and cheering for the dog scene in the original. Easily one the best theatrical experiences I've had. So much fun!

in the movie, his character is killed in an early experimental test flight of the new hybrid fighters using alien tech.

in real life he did not want to do another sci fi movie so soon after the failure of his movie with his son "after earth".

filming started in 2015, but casting announcements for the movie was done in 2013.

but i'm reading wikipedia and someone posted that will smith was asking ridiculous money to come back, probably knowing they can't afford him so he didn't have to.

I read somewhere that the Suicide Squad filming conflicted with IDR filming and the production team didn't want to wait for Will to wrap up. He wanted to be a part of it but didn't want to stiff SS.

i read an article that supports what you posted as well. i would like to think you are right because it sounds more positive.

i can't find the exact article i read, but this is about as close as it gets:

http://www.slashfilm.com/will-smith-independence-day-resurgence/

Smith went back and forth for years on Independence Day: Resurgence before ultimately deciding to pass. Last year, Emmerich explained Smith’s choice. “Well, you know, like near the very beginning, I wanted to work with him and he was very excited to be in it,” he said, “but then after a while, you know, he just was tired of sequels and he did another science-fiction film [After Earth], which was his father-son story, so he opted out.”

The truth of the matter is that the original film did make use of heavy CGI...

It also DID have some very notable practical effects, such as the city-destroying fire storms. The DVD extras have some great stuff about how the effects were done.
