2017 Toyota C-HR Video, First Look » AutoGuide.com News (http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2016/03/2017-toyota-c-hr-video-first-look.html)

Toyota has an all-new crossover ready to invade the crowded segment.

The 2017 Toyota C-HR was originally supposed to arrive in North America as a Scion model, but now that the brand has been axed, it will be sold as a Toyota. Built on the Japanese automaker’s new TNGA modular platform that was introduced on the new Prius, the C-HR will actually be offered as hybrid. Yes, it’s the same powertrain as the Prius with a 1.8-liter paired to an electric motor to provide a total system output of 122 horsepower.

Toyota will also offer the C-HR with a 1.2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 155 hp, paired to either a six-speed manual transmission or CVT. In addition, the company plans to offer a 2.0-liter mill for select markets, which will likely be the engine available in the U.S. while the smaller 1.2-liter engine is sold in Europe.

Overall, the 2017 Toyota C-HR is stylish, with a sporty coupe design. The company claims it won’t be boring to drive either, with a low center of gravity and multi-link rear suspension.

Does it have a 2 tone paint job or is that just the lighting?

thumper

it's the lighting.

i keep thinking it looks like a turtle. but does it look better or worse than a Juke or a HR-V?

it's too bad it dosen't have the 194hp 2.5L/hybrid setup from the RAV-4...

supposed to slot under the RAV-4, just like how the HR-V is with the CR-V?

Don't know about the rest of you guys, but I love it, very radical and dynamic styling for sure.

Please Toyota, just don't make a CVT the only choice of transmission? I'd much prefer you stuck in a 6spd automatic

i'm just happy there is a 6spd manual

the hybrid version uses a e-CVT, which uses a planetary differential gearset which can simulate an auto 6spd... but from what little that was said in the review above, i guess the regular gas versions uses the rubber band CVT i hate so much :o

found this on a japanese website that wouldn't translate into english... all i could read was "gazoo racing", so it might be a concept for a race design and not just rice...

they like triple blacked out the glass on the show car, just like they did on the ft-86 when it was doing the show circuit... but it's been literally within the last 24 hours this was made public so hopefully someone will risk opening the door.

Whats with this current generation of cars all looking like transformers? Will we ever get clean lines back???

Is it just me or do those rear door handles look like they'd require some very uncomfortable hand bending to utilize?

It's not bad with the styling cues.

Maybe, they will (or should) introduce a larger engine with more horsepower in the future if the lower hp versions sell well.

from what little i can see, it appears to be a pull handle, but flush unlike the one on the front door... regardless, if you have little kids to carry, they are going to be too short to reach that.

what is your definition of clean lines? eg: cx-3?

Whenever I see a CX-3 on the streets, I always think to myself how disproportionately small they look. It is based off the Mazda 2 we're not getting, but it feels like the greenhouse should have been taller, it looks like a squished Mazda 2 with a lifted ride height :suspicious:

thumper
03-10-2016, 09:28 AM
The CX-3 to me is a larger, more useful Mazda2, but is the underpowered, undersized and less practical sibling of the CX-5.

So basically this C-HR is following the same forumla, ie. based off the Prius, smaller than the RAV-4, but dosen't have the same interior volume (that roofline can't be good for rear passengers larger than kids), or power output.

But in this market segment, this is the only hybrid available I think... does the Kia Soul EV count?

Most of Mazda's KODO design language is pretty clean. Toyota and Honda seem to be employing the idea that "the more creases the better". Look at the new Prius.

I'm more of a less is more/modernist type person, so these don't do it for me at all.

Pretty sure it's called the CH-R not the HC-R :lawl:

What I'm most puzzled about is how rear passengers will be able to see out those windows at all, they're probably the smallest rear windows on a four door vehicle ever...

Thumper, have you taken a CX-3 out for a spin? While the car is definitely no powerhouse, I found the engine performance to be quite adequate. IIRC, it is an exhausted-restricted version of the engine in the Mazda, but if you step on it for a bit, the engine does have some go, esp after the 3k rpm mark.

I've only had the misfortune of driving a miserable rental Mazda2 auto (it was either that or a Kia Rio  ). When I asked about the CX-3 online, I was told it wasn't that far off, and I didn't take it further. I have been in a CX-5 GT though... and I like

LOL~ Understood. I've had the misfortune of driving a rental Mazda2 auto, and the power levels of that thing for anything other than inner city traffic is just a sad, sad experience. If it were a manual, however, the Mazda2 is quite a bit of fun to drive.

Mind you, the Mazda2 uses the previous gen 1.5L MZR engine, whereas the CX-3 uses a less powerful version of the 2.0L SkyActiv engine, but it is a heavier vehicle.

For the CH-R, the real life pics make it look a lot longer / larger than I first though. The rear roofline also makes me wonder how much the rear passenger headroom is gonna be compromised.

The CX-3 is not based off the old Mazda 2 that we still have in North America, it is based off the refreshed completely new Mazda 2 that other markets around the world have that Mazda has said North America won't be getting, instead we get the CX-3, perhaps because Americans don't particularly fancy tiny cars?

Got D-pillar blind spots, bro?

Also, what is with new cars that are designed like they've already been in an accident?

Lost interest as soon as they announced the motor. All of Toyota's modern ZR motors legitimately sound like lawn motors, or a snow blower or something. It's got this unrefined grainy sound that's really unpleasant.

And a step stool for kids and the height-challenged. That handle location would be an immediate no sale for me as my kids could never open the door on their own. Shouldn't a vehicle like this cater to young families?

CVT is the way Japanese car companies chose to get optimize their MPG figures, because their domestic engines are typically lower torque.

It is an appliance mobile that looks cool. That's what most people want (higher lookout position) and willing to pay. I find I am in the minority when looking for longitudinal layout with engine as close to the firewall as possible.

I saw CVT and did a full cartwheel out of that page
